Peta Videodawnie56571 min - Feb 15, 2008This video was produced by Jerome Hubbard, a videographer for the HBCU Journal, a student publication of the National HBCU Media Conference. HBCU Journal reporter Justin LaGrande wrote the accompanying text. When most people think about PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), images of protesters throwing paint on fur coats come to mind. The animal rights group has come under fire multiple times in its nearly 30-year history, with last year's animal cruelty case brought against NFL quarterback Michael Vick marking their latest major media coverage. Why then, is this group attending a college journalism conference? According to PETA representative Ryan Huling, they are taking this opportunity to educate students on the seemingly horrific conditions used by fast food company KFC. The chain has been accused of using horrible tactics to get the chicken from the farm to the plate. PETA went much farther than simply accusing KFC; they also conducted a hidden camera. "They give the chickens growth-promoting drugs that increase their weight so much that the chickens end up with broken legs and wings as they struggle to move, " Huling said. As he engages conference goers, a video displaying hidden camera footage, narrated by Rev. Al Sharpton, from farms operated by KFC, is shown on a continuous loop. This boycott is the latest conducted by the animal rights group. KFC did not return calls for comment. Previous campaigns led to fashion mogul Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger fully eliminating the use of fur in their clothing lines. When asked about some of the aggressive style tactics PETA has used in the past, Huling said, "Our methods have been misunderstood, but we sometimes have to take unconventional means to get our point across." PETA was started in 1980 in Norfolk, Va., with the intention of protecting animals from the alleged cruel practices of corporate farmers. Their campaigns have rescued animals from crash testing conducted by General Motors, lab experiments, inhumane movie sets and other situations deemed cruel by the group.
