It will be the second career NFL regular season start for Dixon, who started one game, an overtime loss at Baltimore, last season. After a workmanlike performance in regulation, it was Dixon's back-breaking interception in OT that set up the game-ending Baltimore field goal. Dixon was 12-for-26 for 145 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT, with 27 yards rushing and one touchdown on the ground, against the Ravens. In the 2010 preseason, Dixon was 23-of-32 for 327 yards, throwing 2 TD and 2 INT, with one of those interceptions returned for a touchdown. As for the 35-year-old Batch, he will start the season in his usual role as backup after getting minimal work in the preseason. Coach Mike Tomlin made the decision based in part on concerns about Batch's durability, which is certainly a valid reason after Batch's last two seasons ended with trips to IR. I'm not the world's biggest Dennis Dixon fan, for the mere reason that I don't think his run-first style translates  to many victories in today's pass-happy NFL. But the Steelers are quickly running out of options at the position, and I believe that Dixon would give the team roughly the same shot at victory that Batch would, once all their respective strengths and weaknesses would be analyzed side-by-side. What Dixon lacks in polish and experience, Batch lacks in speed and agility. In either case, the other 50 non-quarterbacks on the roster must all raise their games in Ben Roethlisberger's absence if this team wants to have any shot at the postseason. I don't think Debbie Downer herself could've written a more upsetting script for the Pittsburgh sports fan. Friday-morning quarterbacks are all giving their two cents on why the Panthers lost, trying to put a face to the defeat. The leading candidates seem to be (drum roll...) the coaching staff, a familiar target in the aftermath of a Pitt loss. That being said, the Panthers were much too conservative in digging a 24-13 fourth quarter hole that could have (and should have) been much worse if not for the Utes shooting themselves in the foot. Dion Lewis was running right into a waiting defense for most of the evening, and was held to a measly three yards per carry on 25 totes of the rock. Jon Baldwin touched the ball only five times, one of them a critical 44-yard touchdown reception. Cam Saddler was limited to three touches. As you can see, I'm not exactly thrilled with the distribution of the ball on offense. But Tino Sunseri can only run what Frank Cignetti tells him to run, which is why he was in the hated Game Manager mode until quarter four. He didn't grow up in that quarter, which is what most people are saying; he was merely allowed to finally do his job.  While it would've been nice for the Panthers to pull this one out, they were equally deserving of the loss. They were sloppy, with 12 penalties, a lost fumble, and Sunseri's back-breaking INT in overtime. Their pass defense was tortured by DeVonte Christopher, who had a line of 8-155-1, and Jereme Brooks (5-87-2). The Pitt O-line could not open up anything for their running backs, who were held to 82 yards on 36 carries (2.3 per). And the offense clearly did not take advantage of Utah's three turnovers like they should have. All the miscues aside, which were sort of expected with this being their first game, the Panthers still showed me enough to think they will be a very good team in 2010. Don't forget the atmosphere in which this game was played: long road trip to a different time zone/altitude, very good opponent, tough place to play, hostile crowd, new QB, no Ray Graham...this is not going to be the standard situation for your average Big East contest. I think the Panthers will be just fine with a few tweaks and a little more experience, so don't everyone jump off the bandwagon just yet. A few notes:-Next week, Pitt hosts New Hampshire at Heinz Field, with gametime set for 1 PM. The Wildcats were 10-3 last season. -Pitt had a throng of fans at an outdoor game-watching party at the Pete, but my goodness, did Versus go overboard in their cuts back to Pittsburgh! Commissioner Goodell said in a letter to Roethlisberger. ?Your actions over the past several months have been consistent with that promise and you must continue to honor that commitment.?-Roethlisberger's suspension kicks in on Friday; he will be working out with California-based quarterbacks coach George Whitfield, throwing to free-agent wide receivers.  -Byron Leftwich does not have a torn MCL, but he does have a second-degree sprain. In 568 career NHL games, Comrie has posted 167 goals, 192 assists, 359 points and 48 power-play goals for the Oilers, Senators, Islanders, Coyotes, and Flyers. He's appeared in 32 postseason contests, with four goals, six assists, and 10 points. Last season, Comrie notched 13 goals and eight assists in 43 games with Edmonton, where he made  around $1.25 million on a one-year deal. He missed a good portion of the season to mono, leaving the team in mid-November and not returning until late January. Off the ice, he married Duff, a.k.a. "Lizzie McGuire", on August 14, 2010 after a three-year courtship. X- Speaking of Quarterbacks, the Post-Gazette is reporting that Roethlisberger and Rooney will not be 'politicking' to reduce the suspension past a two game reduction.  Why would you not give it a try?  At worst, you get a 'no' and it is reduced by two games and you at least let him consider it. XIII- Leftwich got injured?  Blame Canada Mewelde Moore!  It appears that Moore is getting paid off to take our quarterbacks out.  QUICK, someone photoshop some hair onto him and see if he looks like the girl from Midgeville.  Don't stop me now, I am on to something. XIV- Peter King picked the Pittsburgh Steelers to win the Super Bowl over the Green Bay Packers this year.  I think picking SB teams in the preseason is so ridiculous it is laughable, but reporters need something to write about.  Anyway, in a follow up article King steps in and explains why he made the pick.  His leading point is that the Steelers will once again have a stifling defense that will lead them to victories.  I cannot disagree with that. XL- If you missed the game yesterday there are a couple of places reporting their notes from the game.  The Tribune has a nice summary of what they saw.  Also, Steelers Depot has a video on this page of Gerry Dulac and Ed Bouchette doing a post game recap at Heinz Field.  Additionally, Post Game Heroes has their complete review of the Steelers 2010 preseason here.  I will give you a brief overview of the players that stood out to me.  First of all, Stevenson Slyvester might end up being the Troy Polamalu of our ILB once he gets accustomed to the NFL and Steelers defense.  He digests plays very well and has a nose for the ball.  On the same note, Crezdon Butler, IMO, might end up being our smartest DB outside of Troy Polamalu.  He is very good at watching the QB and keeping his man covered at the same time, and therefore gets a very good jump on the ball when it is thrown his way.  Emmanuel Sanders is the real deal.  Great hands, good route runner, speedy, good blocker, and has moves after the catch.  If he continues to improve, I think he could be the heir to Hines Ward.  Antonio Brown should get a roster spot instead of Stefan Logan.  He is faster and has better moves.  If we could make splash plays on ST returns, it could help out our offensive problems in the first four weeks.  Jonathan Dwyer is going to be the hardest decision when the coaches make the final roster cuts.  I think he offers speed and power that none of the other back up RBs can offer.  However, he is still a big project and his blocking leaves a lot to be desired.  My gut feeling is that he would not last on the waiver line.  Isaac Redman is good for one 10+ yard run every game.  Keenan Lewis bounced back a little bit last night and made a few plays.  We are still not seeing each other though.  A few pics of the stand outs (from Yahoo): XLIII- This bullets for you.  Oops, I thought I was PixburgArn there for a second.  Speaking of cuts, the 53 man rosters are due this weekend.  A big question mark for me is the list of OL that will make this team behind the Starters.  Steelers Lounge, a great, new Steelers site, did a break down of the Offensive Line play last night.  Basically, they go through and rate each player giving them a "good" or "bad" for each play they are blocking.  A penalty gives you an automatic "bad".   Flozell, Starks Pouncey, and Hills top the list with Hartwig and Kemo being at the bottom.  Anyway, I think Flozell has come a long white nicely and I am expecting him to have a very good season.  I think our biggest weakness on the line is going to be the guard spots. QB Byron Leftwich, the Steelers' presumed opening-day starter, was taken to a hospital on Thursday night after an injury to his left knee in the second quarter of their game against Carolina at Heinz Field. With 10:25 left in the first half, Leftwich completed an 18-yard pass to rookie WR Emmanuel Sanders before being knocked off his feet as RB Mewelde Moore attempted to block Carolina S Marcus Hudson. Leftwich, 2-of-4 for 43 yards on the night to that point, was taken to a nearby hospital and will undergo an MRI.  His agency, Pro Player Solutions, tweeted the following message: "Our thoughts and concerns are with PPS client Byron Leftwich who tore his MCL this evening. Bad luck for a classy guy." If Leftwich's injury news is true, the team will have a genuine QB dilemma on their hands, as Mike Tomlin will be forced to decide between young Dennis Dixon and late-surging veteran Charlie Batch, who now looks like he might not be going anywhere after all. Funny how these situations seem to sort themselves out sometimes.  But back to the game action, where Ben Roethlisberger started for Pittsburgh, going 4-of-6 for 39 yards before giving way to Leftwich. After Leftwich went down, Dennis Dixon entered the game and threw a 23-yard touchdown to Emmanuel Sanders, who had a very solid 66-yard, three-catch effort on Thursday. Charlie Batch closed things out for the Black and Gold QBs, efficient but unspectacular while going 3-for-4 for 10 yards. In addition to Leftwich, the team may be dealing with another injury on offense, as tackle Jonathan Scott rolled his ankle. I have a bad feeling the line will have that work-in-progress/construction zone feel for much of the year. Call it a hunch. Rookie RB Jon Dwyer got an extended look in the backfield and took full advantage of the situation, with 86 yards on 20 carries, including as long of 36. Will his late-preseason push be enough to earn the late-round pick a roster spot? That remains to be seen, but I think he's still destined for the practice squad. On the D side, the Steelers dished out some serious hits on Thursday night, especially Crezdon Butler and Ryan Mundy in the secondary. Lawrence Timmons and Stevenson Sylvester both had nice games at the linebacker position for the Steelers, who allowed just 123 yards and three points on the evening. Other than that, the game was pretty bland, as is usually the case when only one touchdown is scored. Skippy Reed kicked four field goals, and ageless Panther kicker John Kasay hit a 51-yarder for the balance of the scoring in a 19-3 Steeler win.  The big story going into Friday, however, is the state of the Steelers' quarterback position, as the team awaits final word on Leftwich and Roethlisberger, who will meet with Roger Goodell (and Art Rooney II) in New York. Needless to say, it should be a pretty restless Thursday night over at Steeler HQ based on the current state of affairs.
