For the past nine months, the New York Giants have talked about playing defense like the Giants of old. The style was simple, brute force. No one outmuscled the Giants. No one ran on them. New defensive coordinator Perry Fewell and his unit will see how far they have come on Sunday when the Carolina Panthers open the season against the Giants in the $1.6 billion New Meadowlands Stadium.

Panthers Hudson Aims to be ST Top Gun

Panthers Hudson Aims to be ST Top Gun
Hudson: The Panthers have a special teams honor called Top Gun. You get points for every play you?re in on special teams and bonus points for every time you make a tackle, force a fumble or make a nice play. You might get 2 or 3 extra points for a tackle. You can also get points taken away, though. My goal is to get Top Gun every week.

Warning though his web page still has a 49ers background!

A lot has been made lately over the fact that the Panthers have 35 draft picks on their 53 man roster. That's a high number for any team, and it's testament to the good scouting and opportunistic drafting done by the Panthers over the past few years. Who thought that selecting Ryan Kalil made sense when they had just signed pro-bowl center Justin Hartwig from the Titans? And why Dan Connor when we had Jon Beason? The Panthers didn't care, they took opportunities like that when they were presented, and now they have a great colletion of home-grown talent. For most teams, the draft is more miss than hit. Core parts of the roster are gotten there, but then they augment them with high-priced free agents. Sometimes it works out. Atlanta's quite happy with Michael Turner, and though they didn't get the same results with Mike Peterson last year they were willing to try again with the signing of Dunte Robinson this year. But for every Michael Turner there seem to be several Albert Haynesworths. Washington loves high profile free agents, but they haven't had much success with them. Ask Chicago how well Jay Cutler has worked out, or see what they think of Julius Peppers after this season. Typically, the best way to build a roster is through the draft. And the Panthers have proven to be as good as any in that regard. But after those 35, who are the other guys? And how did they get here? What kind of impact will they have? This article takes a look at those questions. For the Carolina Panthers, here are "The Other Guys."

  The Starters
Tyler Brayton, #96 (6-6, 280lb DE, 8th year, Colorado)When it became apparent that Mike Rucker was just plain done as a player, the Panthers went out and quietly signed free agent Tyler Brayton from the Oakland Raiders. The former first round pick was playing Defensive Tackle in Oakland, and had been relegated to the second string. All he's done in Carolina is resurrect his career at the Defensive End position. Brayton is a high-motor player who's always been good against the run, but who's become a sack threat late in his career.
Derek Landri, #61 (6-2, 290lb DT, 4th year, Notre Dame)The Panthers claimed Landri off waivers last December, when Jacksonville decided that he just wasn't a fit for their new 3-4 defensive scheme. Landri is a smaller defensive tackle who's always been an intense player. Sports Illustrated put him on their top ten draft steals list when he dropped to the fifth round, and as a rookie he scored a rare defensive tackle "hat trick" (a sack, a pick and a fumble recovery) against the Steelers playing in relief of the injured John Henderson. He may not look like a prototypical defensive tackle, but he plays like an ideal fit for Ron Meeks' defense.
Louis Leonard, #94 (6-4, 325lb DT, 4th year, Fresno State)Early in the season last year, the Panthers were reeling from injuries on the defensive line. Marty Hurney did some great work at the time, restocking players almost as fast as they went down. It may not have been fast enough for some fans, who always want stuff done before you know you need it, but the process brought in Louis Leonard from the Cleveland Browns for a fifth round draft pick. Leonard made a quick impact, registering a sack in his first game. Unfortunately, he went down in the second, out for the season with a broken left ankle. Leonard was undrafted in 2007, and had stops in San Diego and St. Louis before landing in Cleveland.
Matt Moore, #3 (6-3, 202lb QB, 4th year, Oregon State)In 2007, the Panthers claimed Matt Moore off waivers as a developmental prospect. He wasn't drafted, but showed enough in preseason with Dallas that several teams perhaps thought he should have been, including the Panthers. Jake Delhomme was entrenched as the starter and David Carr had recently been signed to back him up, but Fox and Hurney felt that Moore could possibly develop into a quality player, given time to learn behind the starters. That year, Delhomme and Carr were injured and Vinny Testaverde was signed to take the helm. When he went down late in the year, they turned to the rookie and he won two of his three starts. He didn't play in 2008, but in 2009 he took over for the injured and ineffective Delhomme and led the team to a 4-1 finish. He doesn't have as much experience as many would like, but his performance to date gave the front office enough confidence to release Delhomme and give Moore the reins. The Specialists
John Kasay, #4 (5-10, 210lb K, 20th year, Georgia)John Kasay is the last original Panther, and don't be surprise if he's the next statue outside of Bank of America stadium. He was signed away from Seattle in 1995 after leading them in scoring during all of his four years there.
Jason Baker, #7 (6-2, 205lb P, 10th year, Iowa)Jason Baker was an undrafted free agent who played in San Francisco, Philadelphia, Kansas City, and Indianapolis before landing in Denver and assuming their full-time punting duties. After the 2005 season, the Panthers traded pro-bowl kicker Todd Sauerbrun to the Broncos for Baker and a 2006 seventh round pick (who would later become Stanley McClover). Since then Baker has far out-performed Sauerbrun, who bounced around the league after testing positive for steriods in 2006 and currently kicks in the UFL.
Todd Carter, #5 (6-1, 190lb K, 1st year, Grand Valley State)Todd Carter, AKA "The Smoothie King", is a rookie deep-kickoff specialist who went undrafted. Rhyss Lloyd filled that role in 2008 and 2009, but was cut after the 2009 season in part to avoid paying an increased veteran minimum. Based on pre-season performances, it was probably a good move. Carter had more touchbacks, and Lloyd was cut by the Vikings.
J.J. Jansen, #44 (6-2, 256lb LS, 3rd year, Notre Dame)In another salary cap move, the Panthers cut longtime long snapper Jason Kyle in 2008 to help them afford Julius Peppers' mammoth salary. He was replaced by Jansen, who was an undrafted free agent on the Green Bay Packers roster. Jansen never played for the Packers, he injured his left knee and spent his rookie year on injured reserve. The trade was for a conditional 2011 draft pick, which looks to be a seventh rounder. The Depth
Ed Johnson, #99 (6-2, 296lb DT, 2nd year, Penn State)Ed Johnson was once a steal of a find for the Indianapolis Colts. He was an undrafted free agent out of Penn State in 2007, and as a rookie made the starting lineup when Anthony McFarland got injured. His 72 tackles were the most among the defensive linemen that year, and he finished the season in the NFL top 20 tackles for all rookies. His problems in Indianapolis started the next year, when he was arrested for speeding and marijuana possession. The Colts cut him 24 hours later, and then re-signed him for a second chance after the season. His next stint with the Colts was ineffective, prompting them to release him during the season for poor performance. He then signed as a free agent with the Panthers, following Defensive Coordinator Ron Meeks, under whom he had his success at Indianapolis. He figures to be a situational run stopper for the Panthers this year.
Tyrell Sutton, #22 (5-8, 213lb RB, 2nd year, Northwestern)Sutton was undrafted out of Northwestern in 2009, and spent the preseason on the Green Bay Packers roster. He was placed on waivers during the final cuts, and claimed by the Panthers, who needed a return man and depth at fullback. Although Sutton doesn't fit the traditional fullback mold, he's a solid blocker and a good all-around player in the mold of Nick Goings.
Marcus Hudson, #25 (6-2, 200lb S, 5th year, North Carolina State)Marcus Hudson was originally drafted by the San Francisco 49ers to play cornerback, and while he never became a full-time starter there he showed a talent for special teams. He didn't fit the 49ers defensive scheme well enough to merit them keeping him, and once his rookie contract was up they allowed him to become an unrestricted free agent. His strength is his versatility, and his physical style makes him a great fit in the cover 2. He will likely be the gunner on special teams, and should excel in the backup defensive back role that Dante Wesley once played.
Charly Martin, #83 (6-1, 212lb WR, 2nd year, West Texas A&M)Martin is another undrafted free agent that started his NFL career on another team, this time the Chargers. He made it to their final cuts in 2009, and then was placed on waivers. The Panthers picked him up and signed him to their practice squad as a development project. This year he looks to have improved enough to make the final roster, mainly based on his special teams talent. He's been favorably compared to former Panther captain Karl Hankton; not only can he play special teams, he can catch the ball as well.
Jamar Williams, #53 (6-0, 237lb LB, 5th year, Arizona State)Jamar Williams seems like he's always been a victim of circumstance. A fourth round pick of the Chicago Bears in 2006, he played the same position as all-pro Lance Briggs, and rarely saw the field. When he did, he displayed the kind of speed and football smarts that marked him as a future starter, and he did very well on special teams for them. But as long as Briggs was there, he wasn't going to do more than show flashes of what he could do (like his 18 tackle game against the Rams). He was traded to the Panthers for strong safety Chris Harris, and when Thomas Davis went down he looked like a lock to gain a starting job in Carolina. Unfortunately, an injury during training camp derailed his hopes there, but he still brings quality depth to a position that's traditionally been a strength for the Panthers.
Nic Harris, #59 (6-2, 232lb LB, 2nd year, Oklahoma)Harris was a fifth-round pick for the Buffalo Bills in 2009, but barely got a chance to develop before he got caught up in a numbers game. The Bills changed from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4, and cut him when he failed a physical after the 2009 season. Carolina invited him to camp, and the Panthers have obviously been pleased with his health, and play. He was one of the most productive tacklers on the defense in the preseason, and even though most of them came against the other teams' second and third string players, the Panthers saw enough to think he may provide quality depth for them.
Jordan Senn, #57 (5-11, 224lb LB, 3rd year, Portland State)Jordan Senn was in undrafted free agent signee of the Indianapolis Colts in 2008, where he mainly played on Special Teams. He figures to do more of the same in Carolina, where he was signed for depth after he was cut by the Colts in the middle of the 2009 season.
Tim Duckworth, #78 (6-4, 318lb G, 1st year, Auburn)To be honest, Tim Duckworth is probably the least secure of the Panthers. An undrafted free agent out of Auburn in 2007, he has spent time on the practice squads in Denver, New Orleans, and Philadelphia. He has yet to make an appearance in any NFL game outside of the preseason.
Andre Neblett, #68 (6-0, 295lb DT, Rookie, Temple)Neblett is an undrafted free agent out of Temple who got a roster spot based on his playmaking ability during the preseason. He has never played for another team in the NFL.
Garry Williams, #65 (6-3, 296lb T, 2nd year, Kentucky)Garry Williams is back for his second season with the Panthers after being signed as an undrafted free agent in 2009. Like Neblett, he has never played for another NFL team.
* * *
So there you have it. The other guys--the undrafted, traded for, found, or claimed guys that fill in the gaps of the Carolina Panthers roster. No stars, no overpriced free agents, just some reliable lunchpail types who look to make Sundays a lot more fun for all of us.
I'm not sure what you all think after reviewing this, but I think we've got a heck of a good GM in Marty Hurney.

TO MY CATS...a POEM...WRITTEN BY JUSTAWOMAN....

So I like to write poetry, thought I would jot down some of my thoughts on our team with my pen..More after the jump....

It's football time in the city, for opposing teams feel no pity.
Football time in the city, time for #89, and heres hoping that the offensive line protects Matt Moores behind.
Good QB'S are hard to find, but I think Matt Moore and Jimmy Clausen will do just fine.
Ron Meeks has a heck of a defensive mind, in no time look how our defense shines.
The season is here, but it is still our offense that I fear. Will we be able to move the ball?, or just like morning traffic in Charlotte on I-85 will our drives stall. Matt can air out the ball, but please on offense Davis can you come up with better play calls.
Just a touch of imagination, as long as the front line doesn't allow penetration.
Special teams has me concerned, praying for them on return punts by opposing teams for touchdowns we aren't burnt.
It's football time in the city, inside like a little girl I am so giddy. Men grab your beer, waited all year now the time is here. On this seat we spent a lot of dollars, please Panthers on the field do something to make me holler.
Beasons going to bring the hits, Kasay has a leg that just won't quit. On the field abide by the rules and regulations of # 89. Got Steve Smith handling things through the air, while on the ground D and Stew, show you how we do. D and Stew rule, 5 yards,10 yards,15 watch them go, defenses wanting to stop them but they are too slow.
GOOOOOO Panthers!!!!!!!!!!!

Three story lines Opening day line-up. Expected to dominate up front, the Giants defensive line underachieved badly in 2009, done in by a mixture of injuries, sub-par performances and a lack of a sense of urgency. The club retooled, taking DE Jason Pierre-Paul and DT Linval Joseph with the first two draft picks to add to a talented group that is still smarting from last year's humbling. Hold the Peppers. There was great concern how the Panthers would be able to pressure the opposing quarterback now that Julius Peppers is gone but in the preseason they...

Panthers rookie QB Tony Pike displayed enough potential against the Steelers to leap Hunter Cantwell for the 3rd QB roster spot.

Darin Gantt takes a thorough look at the impact of the Panthers roster cut down decisions in his latest post on the Observer. First there is the composition of the 53 man roster as far as number drafted by the team:

Not much use counting other rosters to see how it compares until they stabilize in a few days, but at the moment, 35 of the 53 player coming from your own drafts is fairly impressive, and has to be fairly high on the charts.

Like Gantt I don't know the official numbers but having 2/3 if your roster filled by draft picks has to be near the top. Now the trick is getting this home grown roster to perform well enough to make the playoffs. One guy I'm very happy made the roster is WR David Gettis:

The question you have to ask yourself is this: When you sign a veteran, are you prepared to cut WR David Gettis to make room for him? They probably aren't.

I think Gantt is right, the Panthers are going into the season with the current depth at WR. Though Gettis got off to a slow start he's grown dramatically throughout the preseason. He's shown an ability to get open, catch the ball and turn it up field. As much as I like Trent Guy he is more likely to be claimed off the practice squad than Guy...more after the jump...

So do you think OL Kirk Barton regrets not reporting to the Panthers?

Wonder how OT Kirk Barton's feeling right about now? He didn't want to come here for a week when the Panthers claimed him off waivers. So instead, they signed former Saints practice squader Tim Duckworth as a temporary place-holder.
All Duckworth did was make the 53. Now, he might not last there, but all you hear guys say is that they want an opportunity, and Duckworth made the most of his.

Duckworth may not stick around long but you can bet he's going to get an opportunity. That's Saints experience won't hurt either. I agree there is a good chance the Panthers look long and hard at OL cuts around the league since they usually keep 9 o-linemen. I bet Barton holds some regrets at some point regardless of how it goes for Duckworth.
Gantt then goes on the guess which eight players will be inactive for the opener, certainly a good question:

Otah, probably for one. And Tony Pike's the third QB. If RB Tyrell Sutton's shoulder's not ready, he might sit but if he's well you need him.	After that, I'd guess you scratch Gettis, DTs Nick Hayden and Andre Neblett (they generally go into games with seven DL), and either LB Eric Norwood or Nic Harris, depending on which one you want running down kicks.

That's seven, so who would #8?
Then it gets tricky.
Maybe it's WR Armanti Edwards, unless he's returning punts. It's hard to deactivate a defensive back, since they only have eight and a few of them are a little gimpy right now. Sitting both Harris and Norwood leaves you with just Jamar Williams and Jordan Senn in reserve at LB.
This is where keeping that extra kicker really sticks them, and why Todd Carter better blast everything out of the end zone to justify his roster spot.

That's a good guess for the first 7 that I can't improve on. I'm thinking Edwards is the 8th since I'm expecting Munnerlyn to return punts to start the season. I'm sure Hayden won't like it, he's the main one with game experience on that list. Lost in all the focus on the offense is the fact special teams hasn't exactly proven they are improved from last season risky operation.
Finally he gives a guess at who the Panthers will try to stash on the practice squad.

Of the guys they cut, you'd guess that WR Trent Guy, FB Rashawn Jackson, LB Andre Ware and CB R.J. Stanford would come back on the practice squad. Probably another CB and two OLs from somewhere else as well. Given Edwards' arm, they may not see the need to add a fourth QB, and could look for some more LB depth.

I imagine Nic Harris might end up there if the Panthers do sign an o-linemen, or Duckworth. But I think the Panthers prefer 9 o-linemen hence my prediction about Harris.
I'm still also adjusting to the loss of G Duke Robinson. Though he was a favorite whipping boy for this blog we still had high hopes for him getting it together and lining up next to Otah. I guess we are going to see how good our running game and RB's really are. Normally you would think a player like Robinson getting a year off to mature would be a good thing but in his case it thinks it bad. The chances are high that instead of getting in shape he gets fat and flushes out next TC. I think the next draft an offensive linemen is going to be high on the list; anyone missing Keydrick Vincent yet?

Per Darin Gantt via Twitter the Carolina Panthers have signed Trent Guy to the team's practice squad.

Great move by the Panthers who ultimately kept two guys they liked in Charly Martin and Guy.

CSR Fantasy League #1 Overview

Figured someone should make a thread showcasing the 1st league, and since I was bored, I figured why not? Anyway, the draft was a couple week ago, and was pretty fun. I always love doing fantasy stuff. A lotta Panthers were drafted - everyone from Smitty and D'lo to Trent Guy. As said before, it was fun, and I hope we can keep it up and going all season long (been a part of too many fantasy leagues that died). Anyway, after the jump I'll post the results (in draft order) with that nifty link that Sniff posted giving analysis of the team and a pic of the person's 1st round pick.

Beason: But it?s amazing to see Greg?s desire to play the game. The kid knows how to play football. Every play he is relentless and he knows it. You can see that chip on his shoulder, he wants to prove to everybody who doubted him that they made a mistake. That?s fortunate for me and everybody else affiliated with the Panthers. We?re happy to have him.

Now that the preseason is complete its time for a quick fantasy update for Panther players and their fantasy prospects. Given the Panthers lack luster offensive showing in the preseason (and I'm being kind) Panther owners have to be concerned. So let's revisit the CBS Sports season predictions (in parentheses) and also look at the week 1 match-ups. I'll do my best to keep it real so let's take it from the top:
RB DeAngelo Williams (216 car, 1,277 yds, 9 TDs; 200 yds rec, TD) - In spite of the lack of TD's by the offense Williams remains a solid play every week, except maybe the opener against the Giants. If you have a better match-up with a lesser RB you might want to consider leaving Williams on the bench for week 1. The Giants have a solid defensive front that should be motivated from the Panthers whooping they put on the Giants to close out Giants Stadium. They won't want to open their new stadium is similar fashion. Williams will get about 70 yds and be held out of the end zone as the defense keys on him in the 1st half. For the season Williams should easily pass the 1,200 yd barrier and exceed 9 TD's in my view. I think he will get more passes out of the backfield too as the Panthers try to slow down an expected fierce pass rush week to week. Let's not forget this guy is only 2 seasons removed from 20 TD's.
WR Steve Smith (1,113 yds, 7 TDs) - In spite of having Matt Moore at QB and coming off of a twice broken arm Smith is solid play every week, including week 1. Smith will be motivated to get on the field; so as long as Moore has time to get the ball in Smitty's vicinity he will catch it. I expect 85 yds and a score against the Giants. I also think 1,250 yards and 8 TD's remains very realistic for him.
RB Jonathan Stewart (1,002 yds, 9 TD's, 140 yds rec) - Stewart torched the Giants for 200 yds in week 16 last season so again, they have heavy motivation to stop. I'm thinking he gets significant carries in the 2nd half and breaks one or two for big yards and a score. Let's say he gets 80 yds plus two scores as he gets the goal line work. For the season Stewart will remain a solid start depending on the match-up as he should see 10 to 15 touches a game. I'm thinking the 9 TD's predicted for the season remains low.

Panthers DST (31 sacks, 37 TOs, 1 DTD, 308 pts against) - This is the one performance that I'm predicting a big leap as a result of the preseason. Though many expect a drop off from this defense, in particular the number of sacks, I'm no longer seeing it. The Panthers will sport a top 10 defense yet again if not closer to number five. I'm predicting 42 sacks on top of the 37 TOs and a much lower point total, around 270. The Panthers have good match-ups in weeks 2 (Bucs), 5 (Bears), 8 (@Rams), 10 (@Bucs), 12 (@Browns), 13(@Seahawks),14 (Falcons) & 15 (Cards). That's seven good plays out of 16 games making them a good situational play and back-up defense.
QB Matt Moore (2,995 yds, 17 TDs, 12 INTs) - Though I have little to base this on considering how poor the preseason went for the offense I still think Moore will improve upon the these predictions, certainly with less INTs at least. If the defense is as good as I think and if the offensive line can get Otah back then 3,200 yds, 20 TDs and 8 INTs is more likely. If you are looking for a bye week replacement Moore has favorable match-ups weeks 5 (Bears), 8 (@Rams) and 10 (@Bucs).
Beyond these five plays the Panthers have little to offer unless someone emerges. The problem with a surprise break out is the Panther offense isn't more run-oriented and not expected to provide a lot of targets to other receivers. Yet if I'm going to play a Homer at this point there is a chance either TE Jeff King or TE Dante Rosario get a bigger role in the offense:
TE Jeff King (220 yds, 2 TDs) - King could get more targets in the Panthers offense with Matt Moore at the helm. Yet even then more than 3 catches a game is the max. He could get 350 yds and 4 TDs on the season but it will still be hard to predict if and when he has a big day.
TE Dante Rosario ( 300 yds, 2 TDs) - Rosario is the best receiver in the Panthers TE stable by far. Panther fans have been waiting for him to get a bigger role, which was dependant on improved blocking to support the run game. If I have to pick a receiver to have a break out year for the Panthers it would Rosario, to the tune of 400 yds and 6 TD's.
WR Dwayne Jarrett (370 yds, 2 TDs) - I have no reason to think Jarrett will exceed these numbers. He yet he again showed flashes in camp of his great hands but when the preseason games rolled around all he could catch was short passes in 5 to 8 yd range. Jarrett will need a couple good games with 80+ yards before I even think of calling him fantasy viable.
WR Brandon LaFell (406 yds,3 TDs) - Though many Panther fans expect LaFell to start and be the #2 WR across from Steve Smith he will still need more than that to fantasy viable. He has shown a propensity for dropping easy passes and making difficult ones. I'm thinking it takes a season before LaFell becomes a real threat.
Other Back-ups: WR Armanti Edwards, RB Mike Goodson, TE Gary Barnidge and QB Jimmy Clausen. Goodson, Barnidge and Clausen would need injuries in front of them before seeing the field but in that scenario they could be a key pick-up.

We've seen lots of familiar names appear on the practice squad as six of the eight players brought back spent time with the Panthers throughout the preseason, but there were also two names that jumped out Dan Santucci and Shawn Murphy who have joined the Panthers' practice squad and after digging a little deeper we may see a curious similarity between one of these guys and a current Carolina Panther.
Well look a little deeper at these two not-so-familiar faces after the jump.

Shawn Murphy is a 6'4", 314 lb guard out of Utah State where he was named 2nd team All-WAC in his senior season. A 4th round pick of the Miami Dolphins Murphy has only played one game in his three seasons suiting up for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2009. He now (along with Tim Duckworth) represents the second offensive lineman signed by Carolina who spent the preseason with a division rival. Both Miami and Tampa have had offensive line issues, so one has to wonder how much of Murphy's failings were his own, and how much was due to poor coaching.
More interestingly though is the story of Dan Santucci, a guard in name only; make no mistake, Santucci is a center. A 7th round pick in 2007 Santucci played center for Notre Dame his senior year, the same Notre Dame team where Jimmy Clausen took over the reigns mid season. Do you think this is a coincidence? Perhaps, but consider the case of Geoff Schwartz the 2008 7th round pick who was selected at least partly due to the recommendation of 1st round pick and teammate Jonathan Stewart.
Essentially we see a precident for the Panthers taking into account the opinions of their players in making personnel decisions. Now, I don't think Clausen knocked on coach Fox's door and said 'Coach, we have to get Dan!' but it's not outside the realm of possibility that they at least asked his input having played with him before.
I can see why Gantt called Santucci a guard, because Kansas City tried to convert him to the position but it appears Santucci is another guy who didn't really get a shot. At least he gives the practice squad a reliable guy to snap the ball and help Jimmy Clausen and the 2nd team in practice.

Is Gary Barndige 2nd on the depth chart?
I was browsing the depth chart at Panthers.com and noticed Gary Barnidge is listed as the second string TE. I don't know if it means he is actually considered the 2nd string but it may be a sign.

So the preseason is finally, mercifully over. Now we get six days that will feel like 60 before the games are real and and the Panthers take the field. We've had four games to watch them go through the motions, and it's time to talk about what we've learned.
The defense is great. That's the beginning and end of that story. No worries, we're happy, healthy, talented, and obviously ready for a great year.
And then there's the offense. Boy, the offense is bad...
No matter who the quarterback is, the only reliable prediction you can make about this unit based on the last four games is that there will be a lot of punting going on in 2010. Just look at the box scores, the only touchdowns scored were by the defense or special teams. Through four pre-season games, the Panthers averaged a paltry 8.2 points per game. They were also last in the league in passing, total yards, yards per play, and first downs. This was not an effective offensive unit, by any definition. The play calling was just awful. Where were the power runs on third and short? Instead we got passes to covered receivers, overthrown balls, sweeps, and just plain bad execution. It's no surprise that we averaged only 11.8 first downs a game.

We attempted a league-leading seven fourth down conversions, and made just one. That should say a lot about the effectiveness of our power running game, or it would if we ran on all of them, which we didn't.
When we ran we were average at best; our 3.9 average was 14th among the 32 NFL teams. But we didn't run much at all, we ran the ball only 38.4% of the time. That was more often than only four other NFL teams. When we passed, we weren't particularly effective either. Our 3.7 yards per attempt was pitiful, good for last in the league. We were last in yards per catch too, at 7.6. When we threw, we threw short, and when we completed the pass, we didn't get much then either. And predictably, our 49.3% completion percentage was also last in the league.Take it all together, and it looks bad. Then when you put it next to last year's offense, it goes from bad to strange.Consider Matt Moore. In this collection of highlights from 2009, you see a quarterback who's poised, relaxed, and who scans the field regularly before picking a receiver and delivering the ball.

The Panthers threw for six yards per attempt last year, to go with 10.6 yards per completion. But the story goes a little deeper than that, because the Panthers used two quarterbacks. For Moore alone, he threw for 7.6 yards per attempt, and 12.4 yards per completion. Separate his numbers out in the preseason and you get 4.9 and 10. Better than the rest of the team, but hardly up to his standards. And even in his highlights this preseason, you can see him locking on early and staring down his receivers (you'll have to go to NFL.com to see them, due to copyright rules). Staring down a receiver is common on screens and slants, but it's a big no-no when you're going vertical. Judging from his 2009 films, Moore obviously knows that.It gets weirder. In 2009 the Panthers ran the ball 53% of the time--more often than 30 other teams. We were the league's third best rushing team. It's almost as if the Panthers completely forgot that in 2010.Or maybe they remember it all too well, and used the preseason to work on the rest of the offense. I'm putting on my tin-foil hat and suggesting that yes, there's a conspiracy afoot. I believe that John Fox doesn't care about preseason games. What else explains the discrepancy between last year and this? It can't be the loss of star receiver Steve Smith, that would almost suggest that you run even more. Instead they ran less. You can say they don't want to run without Stewart, or Otah, but that flies in the face of what they did last year when one or both were absent. You can suggest that all the reports out of camp on how well Moore looked were just public relations, designed to boost ticket sales. At the same time, you need to accept that he's getting worse instead of better.Or you can imagine a scenario that has Jeff Davidson telling Moore that he wants a specific play run, no matter what the defense is. And he wants Moore to hit a specific receiver. What better way to get the film you need in a game situation? In such a scenario, you can easily see Moore doing something crazy, like throwing into triple coverage. He did that more than once this preseason. You can see him locking on early. Staring down becomes a given. It certainly explains his level of play in 2010.Maybe Fox isn't interested in converting a third and two by running Williams against an opponent that's fielding six defensive backs. Maybe he doesn't care if a receiver's route is designed for a five yard pickup when we need 10. It could just be that he's interested in how well Jarrett runs after the catch, and that's a good way to find out.I know it sounds crazy, but it just plain looks like Fox & Co. didn't care if they won or lost. Plays were called to see how different players executed. You wouldn't notice it as much on the defensive side because all we did was play a few vanilla sets, and a read-and-react zone defense can be pretty effective without a game-plan.
You'd notice that attitude on offense though. In that scenario, you would see a lot of interesting decisions made, decisions that don't play to your strengths. You would be missing a lot of the things that you know work. You would see an offense with a terrible conversion rate, one that had trouble consistently moving the ball. Sound familiar?Next week we'll put the conspiracy theory to the test. If you see the Panthers running the ball more often than they pass it, you'll know it's true. If throws into coverage go to Jarrett instead of LaFell, there may be something there. If LaFell and Gettis instead get the shorter throws that require yards after the catch to get a first down, ditto. A Carolina offense that pounds the ball to set up the play-action should return. Matt Moore will do the "drop back, look left, then right, then throw" routine he had last year. And his long passes won't just go to Smitty. It won't be like the preseason at all. Or if it is, it will resemble the preseason in the same way that a game resembles the practice. Because I believe that was the coaching staff's approach; that preseason games are practice and don't count.Next week you can probably count on a tough defense that gives Eli Manning several looks, and continues the excellent form they showed in the preseason. And you can probably expect at least one offensive touchdown. The only question is whether it will come in the first quarter or the second. But don't count on it. In fact, don't count on anything from the offense. After all, we haven't really seen it yet.

The football sites of SB Nation are planning on doing a Madden '11 tournament this season. It appears that the preferred platform is Xbox 360, but there may also be a PS3 league if there's sufficient demand. Additional parameter--you have to be able to play Madden online.

Thus, if you're interested in representing the hopes and dreams of Cat Scratch Reader and your Carolina Panthers in this endeavor, please send me an email by clicking on my name to get my email address. You'll essentially play the exact schedule of the regular season which should be fun!

Panthers turn down trade offer for RB Tyrell Sutton

Panthers turn down trade offer for RB Tyrell Sutton
Per Darin Gantt at least one NFC team contacted the Panthers to inquire about the availability of RB Tyrell Sutton, only to be shot down by the organization. From connecting dots surrounding some other stories around the NFL I believe that team was the Seattle Seahawks.

What does everyone think of this steadfast desire to keep Sutton? I love Tyrell's 'do everything' approach, but should it be considered that perhaps this indicates the Panthers' future plans at the position?

They don't have a quarterback. When you don't have a quarterback in the NFL, you're not going to be a really good football team.
