The frustration of the entire A's fanbase comes from the current situation; the battered Texas Rangers have been trying to make a race of it for the last month and the A's simply aren't good enough at hitting the baseball to answer the call. We have one more home game tonight against the weakest team in the division (and one of the weakest in the sport), and the A's probably should capitalize on this and win the series. Or not. Whatever. Gio Gonzalez will take the mound for the A's, facing Seattle's Luke French. Carson, Davis and Crisp have won the outfield start tonight and Tolleson will be at third. Unfortunately, innings 1 and 2 also count, which wasn't good news for the A's tonight. The A's would put two runners on in the first inning (a walk to Barton and a single by Suzuki), but Jack Cust would strike out, a familiar sight in his 0-4, 3K game. The Yankees wasted no time in taking the lead in the first on a single by Jeter and a double by Teixeira. The second inning won't be on Anderson's highlight reel. Two one-out singles would put runners on first and second for the Yankees and after a strikeout for the second out, it looked as if Anderson would escape unscathed. But with Jeter batting, Anderson couldn't make the play at first to end the inning, and the Yankees doubled their lead on the play. After a steal of third, Anderson would walk the next batter to load the bases, and a Teixeira single would bring two more runs home. That's all the Yankees would score, but it would be enough. Anderson settled down to pitch six innings overall, as his A's made a valiant effort to get back in the game. A two-run homerun by Kouzmanoff in the fourth would cut the lead in half, and a Rajai double, stolen base and groundout would score the third run. In a game that seemed a crucible of the entire season, the A's lacked fire, dropped the torch and flamed out in an attempt to capitalize on a ton of opportunities, including one to get within 6 of the faltering Texas Toast. What can you say?  I almost broke stuff watching this game and it makes me sick to have to write about it.  Dallas Braden squeezed all the lousy bloop hits he will give up all season into one miserable inning and the A's let umpteen chances to get back in the game slip away by leaving so many guys on base I lost track... I think it was 13 but it could've been 113 or more.  After a 1-2-3 1st from Braden, the wheels came off and landed the lefty squarely in a ditch, with the M's sending 11 men to the plate with 5 scoring.  Outside of a couple of reasonably hard hit balls, their 7 hits that inning were a collection of broken bats and dunkers that would have made even bald people pull out their hair.  It was all so frustrating I was surprised newly-minted TV color man Ben "The One-Armed Man" Sheets didn't start cussing in Cajun in the booth. Games like this are an indicator of exactly how flaccid the A's offense is... I'd advise a healthy dose of Viagra -- in the form of actual hard-slugging sticks that stand up under pressure -- this offseason. There were so many chances for our boys to score in this game you'd have thought they were a high school quarterback at a cheerleader convention, but sadly it was not to be this evening.  Outside of a Kurt Suzuki 2-RBI single in the 5th, the A's stranded every other baserunner they managed until the last moments of the game and even left the bases loaded several times.... most painfully in the 1st, when with one out Mark Ellis lined right back to the pitcher, who promptly doubled Jack Cust off first base to end the threat.  The A's would not score apart from 'Zuki's hit until the 9th Inning Obligatory TeA'se, when PH Coco Crisp -- who sat out with a sore knee -- knocked in two with a single.  A hit from newcomer cutie Jeremy Hermida and a wild pitch to plate Crisp forced M's closer David Aardsma into the game to shut the door, and he did so on 2 pitches, getting Cliff Pennington to fly out with men on the corners. Ah, Fister, aka He Whom We Hardly Knew.... he was pumped to face the A's, given that we are the only team he's beaten whatsoever in his last 12 starts.  That's right, he's 2-10 in his last 12 decisions, with both wins coming in his total domination of Oakland's anemic, almost non-existent offense.  If games like this fail to convince the Athletics' Front Office that they need to spend the money and make the trades -- by any means necessary -- to bolster this pathetic attack, then they are in all likelihood completely asleep at the wheel and someone better wake them up before the brick wall comes and things get ugly. Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow is another day... just ask William Shakespeare. I'm pretty much there myself. I'm ready for the 2008 baseball season to be over. It's hard to believe the A's were only 6 games back a month ago and had the fourth best run differential in the AL. Since then, the A's have been craptastic. They've been outscored by 43 runs in the last month and are now 17.5 games behind the Angels. By the way, my sister got me a great little thing from Brookstone this past Hanukah. It's called the Sportscast. It sits on my desk and reminds me every day that this year is a lost cause. It currently tells me that the A's have lost nine straight games to fall to 53-60. Of course, you can get this information anywhere, but the benefit here is that it's always on... always taunting me. Oakland Athletics - Sport Snipe - Team News - Stats - Updates http://www.sportsnipe.com/main_sportsnews/2920991/another-week-closer-to-2009.html As the 2008 season grinds toward it's merciful end, the A's had another poor week, going 2-4 against the Rays and White Sox. Sure, there were a couple bright spots, but there were too many low points. Three blog posts caught my eye this week: (1) F's for the A's from BaseballMusings. I'm a big a fan of Billy Beane as anyone, but he screwed up this year... He tore the heart out of the pitching staff, and the result is a team that obviously no longer cares and no longer even tries to win. The Athletics... trot out a lineup that can't get on base, can't hit for power, and can't score runs. It's a joke and an embarrassment... The A's may have a plan, but it's getting harder to see. Maybe keeping Haren and Harden and drafting players who can actually hit would have been a better strategy. I agree with Pinto's observation that the team stinks and that they've essentially quit on the 2008 season. It's probably also true that Beane screwed up the 2008 season, but I'm not too bothered by it. We knew this was going to be a rebuilding year, and the A's have done a tremendous job stockpiling young talent. The ceiling for this year's squad just wasn't that high, and it would have been a bigger mistake to have sold prospects in order to make a run this year. I'm still willing to give Beane the benefit of the doubt. (2) Gettin' Ziggy With It (Season 2, Vol. 6) on AthleticsNation I want to take a quick second to thank everyone for the support I received as I approached and eventually surpassed the Major League record for consecutive scoreless innings to start a career. I honestly didn?t think the record would be that big of a deal?it?s such an obscure record, and it had been held for so long that I honestly didn?t know that it was something that would be kept track of... I got a lot more attention with it than I anticipated, and that really surprised me. My teammates have been very supportive, which has been really nice, since they?re the main reason the streak exists in the first place. It?s obvious I?m not a strikeout pitcher, so I rely on my defense so heavily night-in and night-out. And, from what I can recall, I think we?ve made 1 error in my 34 innings so far. And at any point, if there had been an unearned run that scored, the streak would?ve been over. But they keep making the plays, so I keep doing my best to get groundballs. Ziegler seems like a pretty good, down-to-earth guy. He's easy to root for. (3) Ziegler (Director's Cut) from Joe Posnanski.
