    <title>Pavstache T-Shirt: Going... going...</title>
    <description>

In Pavstache We Trust. One more update on the&amp;nbsp;Pavstache T-Shirt!
First of all, thanks to each and every one of you who have purchased a shirt so far! While a majority of the shirts have shipped to customers within the state of Minnesota, we've had orders come in from all across the country! Pavano fans, coast to coast! Even an international order (no, not Canada, and not Jesse!). I heard a few readers have already worn them to games, so keep it up! And share your pics if you got 'em (like reader Taylen from San Francisco did right here!).
T-shirts are now regularly priced at $12 (both mens and womens versions alike). Part of the deal with these shirts is that they are strictly&amp;nbsp;limited edition garments, so get one while you still can. No more Pavstache tees are being printed. I'm retiring the design in order to make room for the next Twinkie Town t-shirt (Jesse and I are finalizing the new shirt this week). So once a size is outta stock, you're outta luck. And believe me, the Pavstache tees are going FAST.
Also, thank you for your patience as I get this whole online shop thing figured out. It literally started out of nothing after Jesse brought up the idea of original Twinkie Town merchandise earlier this summer. Little did I know my own house would turn into a mini shipping warehouse! So bear with me as I work out the kinks.&amp;nbsp;The Blorch! Shop&amp;nbsp;started as an idea of mine several years back (Blorch! is the name of my small cartoon/production company, and I always intended on selling apparel at some point), so I gotta thank Twinkie Town for finally setting things in motion! As soon as more Twinkie Town goods show up in the coming months, Twinkie Town&amp;nbsp;will get its own dedicated site via Blorch! And yes, while PayPal does the job, I hope to eventually get a better online merchant. Streamlining is my goal!
So to review:
&amp;nbsp;

THANKS FOR ORDERING AND FOR SUPPORTING TWINKIE TOWN!
ORDER A PAVSTACHE T-SHIRT&amp;nbsp;WHILE YOU STILL CAN!
NEW SHIRT IS COMING SOON!
Go Twins? GO TWINS!!!

The Twins got just enough offense, just enough pitching, and a weapons-grade dinger from Jim Thome as they defeated the Royals 5-4 in a Labor Day matinee.&amp;nbsp; Meanwhile, the White Sox won their 7th in a row (on the road, no less), defeating the Tigers by the same score in 10 innings.
Kansas City got to the returning-from-injury Kevin Slowey early, staking starter Sully O'McSullivan to an early 2-0 lead.&amp;nbsp; After the Twins halved the lead, the Royals threatened to blow the game open against Slowey in the 4th.&amp;nbsp; However, with the bases loaded and two outs, Mitch Maier hit a screamer right at Jason Kubel's Beard, ending the threat and Slowey's day.&amp;nbsp; There were no immediate complaints about his removal for eventual winnerJeff Manship in the 5th, but be sure to tune in to KFAN on Tuesday to double-check.
Speaking of the 5th, that is when the game turned in the Twins' favor.&amp;nbsp; With the game tied 2-2, Kubel hit a rare Target Field opposite field home run with one on, giving the Twins the lead for good.&amp;nbsp; Jim Thome followed that up with the longest home run in said field's short history, a 480-foot blast that hit off the top of the American flag pole in right field, balanced the budget, brought peace to the Middle East, and helped Jennifer Aniston find true love.&amp;nbsp; Orlando Hudson's look of gleeful disbelief in the dugout might be the best moment of the Twins season.
After that, it was another Pepto Bismol-sponsored adventure with the Twins bullpen in innings 6-8.&amp;nbsp; The Royals got to Manship for 2 runs on back-to-back doubles in the 6th, and then Randy Flores, Matt Guerrier and Jesse Crain all made things a tad more interesting than they needed to be, but held the line.&amp;nbsp;
The Twins failed to extend the lead in the bottom of the 8th, with Denard Span getting gunned down at home (pretty sure he was safe, but it was a hell of a throw by Gregor Blanco).&amp;nbsp; That left it to Matt Capps, coming off an appearance where he faced four batters, got no one out, and notched a save thanks to some illegal man-touching.&amp;nbsp; Today, he was merely professional, throwing a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.
Normal night game tomorrow, which is good, since it sounds like it's going to rain every minute until then.&amp;nbsp; Enjoy the rest of your Labor Day everyone, and kids, go to bed early.&amp;nbsp; There's school tomorrow.

    <title>Outfield Defense and How to Fix the Problem in 2011</title>
    <description>

The Twins outfield defense has been an Achilles heel all season.&amp;nbsp; Not noticed by the casual fan, but a constant concern and worry in blogs,&amp;nbsp;forums, and pages like Twinkie Town.&amp;nbsp; The four principal Twins outfielders are slow (Kubel), unskilled (Young) and out of position (Span,&amp;nbsp;mediocre in center, but top-notch on the corners) along with the displaced Michael Cuddyer , who might be some combination of the other three.&amp;nbsp; More after the jump&amp;nbsp;

All four outfielders are under team control for 2011--Kubel has an option, Cuddyer had an option already picked up, Young is arb eligible for two more years and Span is under contract at least through 2014 (2015 option), so we'll see the same faces with the same skills unless Twins management does something.&amp;nbsp;
While I discount defensive metrics, my eyes and those metrics agree that Delmon Young, despite decent speed and a fine outfield arm, is among the worst defensive outfielders in major league baseball.&amp;nbsp; He judges balls poorly and takes bad routes, limiting his range.&amp;nbsp; He has poor hands, dropping several balls and fumbling several more and is not adept at playing caroms or making catches at the wall.&amp;nbsp; Delmon has hit better than ever before--he will have career highs in homers and RBI and will almost certainly pass the century mark in RBI, but his defense hurts the club a lot.&amp;nbsp; What to do with Delmon?&amp;nbsp; I don't think DHing him is an answer, he is too young and the Twins probably have other, better options.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Delmon was a right fielder in Tampa, but I really don't think it makes any difference.&amp;nbsp;So the choice is either live with the bad defense in left or trade Mr. Young.
Right field has been patrolled by Michael Cuddyer and Jason Kubel.&amp;nbsp; Cuddyer started 66 games in right before the All-Star break but hasn't been out there since July 7th, due to Justin Morneau's injury.&amp;nbsp; Cuddy isn't fast, doesn't display great instincts or take great routes.&amp;nbsp; He catches what he gets to and has almost as strong an arm as Young, but much more accurate.&amp;nbsp; At best, he grades out average as a right fielder.&amp;nbsp; Kubel has the need for speed.&amp;nbsp; He was slated to be the primary DH, but the need to use Jim Thome as DH, coupled with Morneau's injury has made Kubel the primary RF.&amp;nbsp; Kubel, in contrast to the others, makes good decisions and takes good routes.&amp;nbsp;He also&amp;nbsp;catches what he gets to, but hasn't been great corralling balls that have already hit the ground.&amp;nbsp; The real&amp;nbsp;problem is range, lack of it.&amp;nbsp; Kubel is a slow runner and just doesn't get to balls that other right fielders can catch.&amp;nbsp; Kubel throws well enough as well.&amp;nbsp;
Denard Span was outstanding in both left and right field in the past two years.&amp;nbsp; There is no reason to doubt that he would again be outstanding if he was a corner outfielder.&amp;nbsp; Denard has shown himself to be only average as a center fielder.&amp;nbsp; He has made some bad&amp;nbsp;decisions and taken some bad routes on balls (especially over his head)&amp;nbsp;and he has collided with both his corner outfielders and middle infielders.&amp;nbsp; It hasn't been all bad, Denard has good range and has made a handful of good to great catches.&amp;nbsp; If he has two good-fielding corner outfielders beside him, his defense, while not worthy of a gold glove, is sufficient.&amp;nbsp; Denard's offense has taken a large dip this year, but he remains the only bona fide leadoff man on the squad.&amp;nbsp;
What to do, what to do?&amp;nbsp; I propose the club swap outfielders with somebody.&amp;nbsp; Young has increased his value with his good offensive year.&amp;nbsp; I would like to see him traded for a center fielder who hits righthanded, so that Span could return to left field where he is a plus plus defender.&amp;nbsp; Someone like Franklin Gutierrez of Seattle would improve defense both in left and center, while the Twins could live with adequate defense in right from Cuddyer/Kubel.

Taking care of business?&amp;nbsp; Check.&amp;nbsp; (Barely.)
If this series is indeed a possible playoff preview, it would have to be a preview of the ALCS.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; And if it was a preview of the ALCS, those October Twins would have to like their chances.&amp;nbsp; The Rangers are winless in six trips to Target Field this year, which seems to be a familar theme for them against contending clubs this season, and that has to be a source of frustration for them right now.
But it's a good sign for your Minnesota Twins.
The Twins took to the Rangers' starter early once again, with C.J. Wilson the victim today.&amp;nbsp; Wilson struggled with control and the Minnesota hitters took notice, taking four walks and a hit-by-pitch.&amp;nbsp; Michael Cuddyer's double in the first opened up a 2-0 lead, and a couple of walks led to another run in the second before Wilson finally settled in and put up zeros in the third, fourth and fifth innings.&amp;nbsp; But his lack of command would come back to haunt him again in the sixth.
Leading 3-2, Jason Kubel, Delmon Young and J.J. Hardy began the inning with back-to-back-to-back singles.&amp;nbsp; After a Matt Tolbert strikeout, Jason Repko earned a walk (although really, that first-pitch breaking ball was a ball...so Repko essentially earned a walk on what should have been a 5-1 count) to load the bases.&amp;nbsp; Denard Span then fell behind 0-2 before taking four straight to walk in a run.&amp;nbsp; Orlando Hudson's sacrifice fly plated the third run of the inning, and signaled the end of Minnesota's scoring.
It did not end Texas' night how it should have.
Jon Rauch took over in the eighth for Blackburn, and sent the Rangers down 1-2-3.&amp;nbsp; He came back out for the ninth, allowing an Ian Kinsler leadoff single before striking out Mitch Moreland and Matt Treanor.&amp;nbsp; Then the wheels momentarily came off.
Julio Borbon doubled into the gap, scoring Kinsler.&amp;nbsp; At 6-3, Matt Capps came on for a one-out save that got very, very messy.&amp;nbsp; Cristian Guzman and Michael Young both singled, making it 6-4.&amp;nbsp; David Murphy walked.&amp;nbsp; The bases were loaded, and what had started as a four-run lead with just one out to go looked about to end in pain.
Vladimir Guerrero swung on a fat fastball right down the middle, and couldn't have hit on a more direct up-the-middle route if the baseball had been laser-guided.&amp;nbsp; Orlando Hudson somehow fielded the ball but had no play.&amp;nbsp; As Guzman scored from third base, Hudson was still drifting to his right with the ball, and noticed that Young had drifted around third.&amp;nbsp; He slung the ball to Tolbert, who may or may not have tagged Young in time.&amp;nbsp; I'm still not sure.
But third base umpire Alfonso Marquez called Young out.&amp;nbsp; Not because Young had gone out of the baseline or because Tolbert tagged him, but because Young made physical contact with his third base coach, Dave Anderson.
Just like that, it was over.
Young went nuts.&amp;nbsp; Anderson lost his mind.&amp;nbsp; Ron Washington was pissed.&amp;nbsp; But you know what?&amp;nbsp; It happened.&amp;nbsp; Marquez, who appeared to not be looking directly at the contact, must have seen it out of the corner of his eye.&amp;nbsp; And on this occasion, of all occasions, the umpires made the right call.&amp;nbsp; Good work on Hudson's part, for seeing Young getting too far around third.&amp;nbsp; Good work on Marquez's part, for being aware enough to see the contact and make the right call.&amp;nbsp; Too bad for the Rangers, who were on the verge of mounting an amazing comeback.&amp;nbsp; Shame on Young and Anderson, for making a massive mental error (physical mental error?) and sabotaging the opportunity.
Who knows what would have happened in the next plate appearance.&amp;nbsp; The game might still be going, or maybe Capps would have retired the next hitter.&amp;nbsp; But it is what it is, and the Twins win.&amp;nbsp; In every season a team needs its share of luck, and tonight Minnesota got part of that share.
Notes, studs and duds after the jump.

With runners at first and second and one out in the second inning, Ron Gardenhire went aggressive and called a double steal.&amp;nbsp; It was successful.&amp;nbsp; For the record, double steals are awesome when they work, they come off looking like a stroke of masterful execution.&amp;nbsp; The Twins didn't net a run from the double-steal, no thanks to a wimpy fly out from Hudson and Wilson's quick reflexes on a Joe Mauer-scorched comebacker.
I mentioned in the game thread that Kubel's bat was probably wasted for his return, since he was facing a southpaw.&amp;nbsp; Kubel made me look like an idiot, picking up two hits.
Joe Mauer was hitless.&amp;nbsp; But he did smack the hell out of the ball a couple of times.&amp;nbsp; He was the guy hit by Wilson in the first inning, but clearly he's fine.
Nick Blackburn's seven-inning, two-run performance was great.&amp;nbsp; Of his 16 outs from balls-in-play, 11 were grounders.&amp;nbsp; Those are essential.
Matt Capps threw 16 pitches, and allowed three hits and a walk.&amp;nbsp; He gets credit for an out, but really it was the stupidity of Michael Young and Dave Anderson.
Twins win.&amp;nbsp; That is all.

    <title>Lonestar Ball:  &quot;It wasn't interference&quot;</title>
    <description>Lonestar Ball:  &quot;It wasn't&amp;nbsp;interference&quot;
They quote the rule book. And maybe they're right. But to play devil's advocate:

1. Marquez apparently DID see the play, otherwise he couldn't have called it. He saw it out of the corner of his eye probably, but he saw it.
2. While Anderson didn't grab Young around the waist and guide him back to third base, touching a player (even on the fingertips) tells that player exactly what you want them to do.
3. Any rule that says &quot;In the judgment of the umpire&quot; really leaves a pretty wide berth for interpretation...of the umpire.
4. Therefore, Marquez could have interpreted the touching of the fingers as &quot;assistance&quot;.

Imagine you're in a room without light. Somebody, by lightly touching the pads of their fingers to yours, can tell you where they want you to go with just a moment's pressure. That's assistance. And in full daylight, when you're trying to figure out where the ball is and whether you need to hustle back to third base, a touch like that can help.

Did it help? I don't know. It could. And really, that's the core of this matter--whether that touch, no matter how light, could have helped.

It was a questionable call, there's no doubt about it. But when a rule is open to an umpire's interpretation, you know what the best course of action is? Don't touch the third base coach, and better yet don't put yourself in a position where you let the umpire think you've touched the third base coach.

At the end of the day, it's a crappy way to end the game. I'd much prefer to have ended it straight up in the next at-bat. But this kind of thing happens, and a play like this wouldn't have been this crucial if the thousands of other unique events before it played out a different way. If the Twins came through with more runs in the sxith, or if C.J. Wilson's command didn't suck, this event may never have taken place.

Let's move on.

    <title>Minor League Report.....September 4, 2010</title>
    <description>

Collecting 43% of 123 votes cast, David Bromberg is the Twinkie Town Player of the Week.&amp;nbsp; With league play ending Monday, we will dedicate the next two weeks to selecting the Twinkie Town Player and Pitcher of the Year.
With only five&amp;nbsp;teams still playing, the organization ekked out a winning week with a record of 18-17.&amp;nbsp; The GCL Twins finished play last Saturday.&amp;nbsp; The four full seasons all will end on Labor Day.&amp;nbsp; Elizabethton's regular season ended Tuesday and&amp;nbsp;they&amp;nbsp;are now battling Johnson City for the league championship.
I can think of only one word when looking at&amp;nbsp;player movement this week....WOW!&amp;nbsp; With the&amp;nbsp;major league rosters expanding, the Twins didn't place anyone on the disabled list.&amp;nbsp; Twins&amp;nbsp;injured during the past few games include Jason&amp;nbsp;Kubel, Danny Valencia and Scott Baker.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;Officially, the Twins placed Justin Morneau on the 60-day disabled list to create a spot on the 40-man roster for Matt Fox, who was&amp;nbsp;called up by the Twins yesterday.&amp;nbsp; Also joining the Twins yesterday were&amp;nbsp;Rob Delaney and Alex Burnett.&amp;nbsp; Trevor Plouffe and Jose Morales joined the Twins on Wednesday,&amp;nbsp;September 1st.&amp;nbsp; The Twins also sent Loek Van Mil, who had been removed from their 40-man roster last week, to the Angels to complete the Fuentes trade.
Now to the moves in the minors to keep the rosters&amp;nbsp;competitive.....Pitchers Carlos Gutierrez and Steve Hirschfield moved up to Rochester, replacing the Trio&amp;nbsp;who moved up to the Twins.&amp;nbsp; Toby Gardenhire was activated from Rochester's disabled list and will serve as their backup catcher with Morales moving up to the Twins.&amp;nbsp; Rochester also placed Tim Lahey on their DL.&amp;nbsp; The Rock Cats placed Santos Arias on the disabled list, with Steve Blevins, Matt Williams, Dakota Watts and Kane Holbrooks all moving up to New Britain.&amp;nbsp; David Deminsky, Brett Carroll, and Nick Alloway all joined the Miracle from the GCL Twins.&amp;nbsp; The Miracle also activated Michael Tarsi from their DL.&amp;nbsp; The Snappers placed Michael Gonzales on the DL while activating Peter Kennelly.&amp;nbsp; Zach See was promoted from the Snappers to Ft. Myers.&amp;nbsp;
Shortstop Brian Dozier was the lone Miracle making the FSL All-Star team.&amp;nbsp; The Twins also announced their seven assignments to the Arizona Fall League.&amp;nbsp; The following players will join players from the Reds, White Sox, Padres and Rays on this fall's Peoria Saguaros squad:&amp;nbsp; David Bromberg, Carlos Gutierrez, Tyler Robertson, Kyle Waldrop, Joe Benson, Chris Parmelee and Ben Revere.

Rochester Red Wings (AAA) (0-7, 48-93, last place, -37.5 games behind Scranton/WB)
The Red Wings are in the midst of a twelve game losing streak, tying a franchise record established in 1920 and 2002.&amp;nbsp; They will face Syracuse tonight, ironically, the same team against whom they broke both of those old records.&amp;nbsp;
The Wings had three good starts, beginning with Cole DeVries last Saturday.&amp;nbsp; Althougth the Wings lost, 2-0, DeVries pitched 5.1 shutout innings with only three hits and four strikeouts.&amp;nbsp; Chris Province was last night's starter, pitching 6.2 innings with three hits, three runs and his career best twelve strikeouts.&amp;nbsp;
Brandon Roberts continued as the Red Wings best hitter with a 9-25 (.360 Average) week.&amp;nbsp; Roberts is now hitting .331/.389/.417 in 139 at bats for the Red Wings while hitting a combined .326/.406/.414 in 307 at bats for Ft. Myers, New Britain and the Wings.&amp;nbsp; Roberts has also stolen 22 bases in 25 attempts.&amp;nbsp;
Matt Fox was certainly in contention to be this week's Player of the Week candidate from the Red Wings following his start on Monday.&amp;nbsp; Although the Wings lost, 2-1, Fox had a quality start in 6.0 innings with four hits, two runs (one earned) and two strikeouts with two walks.&amp;nbsp; With the International League's fifteenth best ERA (3.95), Fox has been the Red Wings best and most consistant starter with a team high 123.0 innings.&amp;nbsp; Then came the events of the last thirty hours.&amp;nbsp; After returning late from a game in Syracuse, Fox got the call at 1:30am that he had been added to the 40-man roster and was going up to the Twins.&amp;nbsp; Lets assume that he didn't get a lot of sleep.&amp;nbsp; He then traveled much of Friday, arriving at Target Field mid-afternoon...taking the mound last night on three days rest against a first place club with the Twins in the heat of a pennant race.&amp;nbsp; For those who have commented he wasn't that great last night.....lets not rain on the biggest parade in the life of this young man who has battled so hard to become a &quot;Big League Pitcher.&quot;&amp;nbsp;
New Britain Rock Cats (AA) (3-4, 42-97, last place, -40.0 games behind Trenton)
With one of the worst records in the history of the league, the Rock Cats needed to draw 21,500 in four games this weekend.&amp;nbsp; They got 6,005 last night as they work to have the highest attendance in franchise history (highest was 2009 at 366,682).&amp;nbsp; Ownership and the staff of this franchise must be credited with having a wonderful season!
Tyler Robertson had a 3-12 record when he took the mound on Wednesday.&amp;nbsp; Robertson picked up his fourth win as the Cats beat Reading, 10-7, pitching 7.0 innings with seven hits, four runs (three earned) and five strikeouts.&amp;nbsp; Thursday, Michael McCardell picked up his thirteenth loss in sixteen decisions in a 4-1 loss.&amp;nbsp; McCardell pitched&amp;nbsp;a complete game (8.0 innings) with six hits, four runs and four strikeouts.&amp;nbsp; McCardell was better in Saturday's 6-5 win, pitching 5.0 innings with three hits and only two runs.&amp;nbsp; Carlos Gutierrez made two appearances before moving on to Rochester, pitching 5.1 shutout innings with five hits, six strikeouts and no walks.&amp;nbsp; In his last ten games as a Rock Cat reliever, Gutierrez has a 2.61 ERA, 2-1 record, one save and 18 strikeouts in 20.2 innings.
Steve Singleton had a wonderful week with four multi-hit games, going 10-29 (.344 Average) as he raised his average to .269/.327/.414.&amp;nbsp; Joe Benson also had a big week, 8-28 (.287 Average), with three multi-hit games and his twentieth home run.&amp;nbsp; Chris Parmelee&amp;nbsp;continued his hot hitting, 9-29 (.310 Average) as he got his numbers up to .278/.344/.396.&amp;nbsp; Evan Bigley also had three multi-hit games, 12-33 (.363 Average), and is now hitting .330 Average in his first 100 at bats in AA.&amp;nbsp;
The best player this week, however, was Ben Revere.&amp;nbsp; As Revere learned that he got his wish and is off to the AFL, he was 13-31 (.419 average) with five runs scored, two triples, and five stolen bases.&amp;nbsp; Revere is hitting a league second best .305 Average with a tenth best .371 on base percentage and third most steals (36) in 49 attempts.&amp;nbsp;
Ft. Myers Miracle (Hi-A) (5-1, 35-31, 2nd place, -1.0 game behind Bradenton)
With three games remaining and a 2.0 game defict, the Miracle entered the weekend needing to sweep St. Lucie while hoping that Brandenton (they hold the tie breaker with the Miracle) would get swept.&amp;nbsp; The Miracle got the job done last night, winning 9-7, while Bradenton lost...can there be a miracle in the future for Jake Mauer's squad?
With all the pitchers moving around this week, the Miracle sent Shooter Hunt to the mound last Sunday.&amp;nbsp; Hunt's problems continued as he lasted only 1.0 inning with three hits, three runs and four walks as the Miracle went on to lose, 10-2.&amp;nbsp; Hunt came on in relief of Michael Tarsi last night, pitching 0.0 inning with no hits, three walks and two runs.&amp;nbsp; Fortunately Tarsi had a great start, pitching 5.0 innings with four hits and two runs in the big Miracle win.&amp;nbsp; Liam Hendriks was back in mid-season form on Wednesday, pitching 5.0 shutout innings with two hits and four strikeouts.&amp;nbsp; Alex Wimmers will likely get the start in the Miracle's final game after a near perfect start in Tuesday's 4-1 win.&amp;nbsp; Wimmers pitched 5.0 no-hit, shutout innings with six strikeouts and a walk.&amp;nbsp; Jhon Garcia got a win and save this week, appearing in three games (7.0 innings) with four hits, no runs and six strikeouts.&amp;nbsp; Garcia has an excellent 2.08 ERA in 26.0 innings since moving up from Beloit earlier this summer.
Angel Morales and Yangervis Solarte both had two multi-hit games while D. J. Romero had three multi-hit games.&amp;nbsp; Romero was 10-24 (.416 Average) and is hitting .270/.390/.403 since the all-star break.&amp;nbsp; The top performance this week, however, has to go to former Gopher Nathan Hanson.&amp;nbsp; Hanson was 7-23 (.304 Average) with back to back games with a three run homer run.&amp;nbsp; Hanson hit a walk-off three run home run in the tenth inning of a 5-2 win Thursay, then another three run home run in last night's 9-7 win.&amp;nbsp; Hanson is hitting .252/.321/.375 in 397 at bats with a team high ten home runs and 46 RBI.
Beloit Snappers (A) (5-2, 34-30, 5th place, -7.0 games behind Quad Cities)
The Snappers also are in a playoff chase with three games remaining.&amp;nbsp; Much like the Miracle, the Snappers are 2.0 games behind Kane County with three games remaining.&amp;nbsp; They hold the tie breaker and need to win two more games than Kane County, who has won their last two while the Snappers split a double header yesterday.
Brad Stillings had a quality start in last Saturday's 5-4 win, pitching 6.0 innings with nine hits, two strikeouts and three runs.&amp;nbsp; Edgar Ibarra also had a quality start in Wednesday's 4-2 win, pitching 6.0 innings with six hits, three runs and eight strikeouts.&amp;nbsp; Martire Garcia and Pedro Guerra both were winners on Sunday and Monday.&amp;nbsp; Guerra pitched 5.0 innings with six hits and three runs.&amp;nbsp; Garcia pitched 5.0 innings with four hits and two runs.&amp;nbsp; Stillings got the start in Thursday's suspended game, pitching 1.0 shutout inning, then returning yesterday to start the scheduled game when he pitched 4.0 innings with two hits and one run.
Josmil Pinto had two multi-hit games with two home runs and seven runs batted in.&amp;nbsp; Aaron Hicks had a big week with three multi-hit games, 10-21 (.476 Average), with a home run to get his average up to .282/.402/.427.&amp;nbsp; The player of the Week was Steve Liddle who was 9-27 (.333 Average) with two home runs, five runs scored and 10 RBI.&amp;nbsp; Liddle is hitting .251/.329/.390 with a team second best 14 home runs and a team high 67 RBI.&amp;nbsp;
Elizabethton Twins (Appalachian Rookie League) (2-2, 41-25, 2nd place, 1.0 game behind Johnson City)
For the first time in recent memory, the Twins did not win their division.&amp;nbsp; A bigger surprise is that the Danville Braves tied Burlington for second place in their division and the team that the Twins faced for the championship the last five years did not make the playoffs.&amp;nbsp; The Twins proceded to beat the East Division champion Pulaski two straight in a best of three series.&amp;nbsp; They advanced to the championship series against Johnson City, losing the opener at home last night, 7-2.
The Twins beat Pulaski, 7-4, behind Manuel Soliman.&amp;nbsp; Soliman pitched 6.2 innings with five hits, four runs (three earned) and eight strikeouts.&amp;nbsp; Michael Tonkin pitched 2.0 innings of no-hit relief to pick up the win.&amp;nbsp; Nate Roberts, Andy Leer, Jhonatan Arias and Gunner Glad all had two hits while Daniel Ortiz had three.&amp;nbsp;
B. J. Hermsen got the start on Thursday as the Twins put Pulaski away, 6-3.&amp;nbsp; Hermsen pitched 7.0 innings with four hits, one run and five strikeouts.&amp;nbsp; David Gutierrez pitched 2.0 innings of shutout relief to pick up the win.&amp;nbsp; Nate Roberts, Brian Burke, Daniel Ortiz, Andy Leer and Kyle Knudson all had two hits.&amp;nbsp;
Pat Dean got the start against Johnson City last night, pitching 6.0 innings with seven hits, two runs and eight strikeouts.&amp;nbsp; He had a quality start, yet got the loss&amp;nbsp;as the bullpen allowed five runs.&amp;nbsp; Jamaal Hawkins and Gunner Glad had two hits&amp;nbsp;while Nate Roberts had a&amp;nbsp;home run.
After battling an injury in mid-August, Oswaldo Arcia went into his first slump of the year.&amp;nbsp; Arcia finished hitting .375/.424/.672, leading the league in all three categories while also having the league most at bats (259), hits (97), and RBI (51).&amp;nbsp; Arcia had the second most home runs (14), triples (tied at 7) and third most doubles (21).&amp;nbsp; As a ninteen year old, will Baseball America rank Arcia as the top prospect in the Appy League?
Nate Roberts finished his season as the Twins second best hitter at .336/.444/.547 in 128 at bats.&amp;nbsp; Roberts was 5-11 (.454 Average) in the Twins three playoff games with two walks, two doubles and a home run.
GCL Twins (Gulf Coast Rookie League) (1-0, 29-31, 3rd place, -5.0 games behind the Rays)
The Twins beat the Red Sox in their final game on Saturday, 3-0.&amp;nbsp; Derek Christensen pitched 5.0 innings owth shutout ball with two hits to pick up his third win.&amp;nbsp; Christensen finished his season with a 3-0 record and 0.66 ERA in seven games (one start).&amp;nbsp; The forty-third round pick out of Salt Lake Community College appears to have a bright future.&amp;nbsp;
Rory Rhodes and Jairo Rodriguez had two hits, while Max Kepler-Rozycki had a&amp;nbsp;three hit game with a double.&amp;nbsp; Kepler-Rozycki finished his rookie season hitting .286/.346/.343.

The last time the Twins saw the Rangers, they beat the Twins 4-3 on consecutive nights.&amp;nbsp; It was nice to be on the other end of that score last night.

How did Matthew Fox manage to be so effective in his Major League debut without striking out a single hitter?&amp;nbsp; Good defense and a little luck.&amp;nbsp; He didn't miss many bats, he didn't throw a lot of first-pitch strikes and the Rangers got a lot of good wood on a lot of balls...but they found gloves, and the Minnesota defense converted the outs.&amp;nbsp; Even the hard ones.
Denard Span was part of that defense last night, jumping into the wall in straightaway center field and making a very nice grab to end the first inning.
Span also had a good game at the plate by collecting two hits, including the go-ahead single in the seventh inning.&amp;nbsp; It's worth noting that last week, Span had talked about his struggles this season in terms of always getting behind in the count because pitchers knew he rarely swung at their first offering...his go-ahead single last night came on a first-pitch fastball that caught too much of the plate.
One more note on Span:&amp;nbsp; his home splits continue to be impressive, batting .315 with a .391 on-base percentage.
We found out yesterday that Jason Kubel's X-Ray and MRI showed no break and nothing messy in general, which is good news.&amp;nbsp; Kubel should be in the lineup by Monday.
Jim Thome made the start last night, which is good news as well.&amp;nbsp; Hopefully his back can continue to stay loose.
Speaking of backs, Brian Fuentes will probably still be unavailable today.&amp;nbsp; Probably.&amp;nbsp; It sounds like the Twins are hoping he'll be ready on Sunday.
Justin Morneau was at Target Field yesterday.&amp;nbsp; No workouts, no swinging of the bat...just getting out.&amp;nbsp; Stay tuned.&amp;nbsp; It's four days until he's eligible to come off the 60-day disabled list, so I imagine the earliest we hear anything new would be Tuesday or Wednesday of this week.
Orlando Hudson was back in the lineup last night, too.
J.J. Hardy's wrist didn't seem to bother him last night.&amp;nbsp; His single that tied the game in the seventh was massive.
Danny Valencia left Friday's game early, but it was just tightness.&amp;nbsp; He's okay.&amp;nbsp; He also made a nice diving stop that started a double play in the fourth inning.&amp;nbsp; Not bad, Rook.
Ben Revere isn't on the 40-man roster, but Gardy has been talking to the front office about scenarios in which he could be added.&amp;nbsp; Since Kubel is due back very soon, this might be dead in the water.&amp;nbsp; But it's clear that the organization is high on him, even after getting clocked in the eye with a baseball this summer.
Finally:&amp;nbsp; if you've ordered a Pavstache T-Shirt, they've been shipped...many of you probably already have them.&amp;nbsp; One of our Twitter followers, taylen24, posted this pic early this morning.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; I'm biased...but it looks good.

On Thursday night, the Twins lost a game they should have won.&amp;nbsp; On Friday, they won a game they should have lost, thanks to the likes of Matt Fox, Jason Repko and Danny Valencia.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Just like we said would happen in April.
A 4-3 victory over the playoff-bound Rangers would be good under any circumstances, but tonight's made it one to savor.&amp;nbsp; Let's be very clear on this: Matt Fox's start on Friday wasn't the best start by a Twins pitcher this year, but it was probably the most necessary.&amp;nbsp; After a game where the Twins set their bullpen on fire,&amp;nbsp;used 3 of their 5 starters and lost one of them to injury for 1-2 starts minimum, the anonymous Fox gave the Twins everything you could have asked for against a formidable Texas lineup.&amp;nbsp; Fox surrendered a mere two runs in 5 and 2/3 innings with the help of some nice defense from Denard Span, Repko and an&amp;nbsp;infield that remembered how to turn double plays, keeping Minnesota in the game while the Twins tried to figure out Rangers starter Jason Holland.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;
That never happened, as Holland handcuffed the Twins through the first six innings, allowing just two runs.&amp;nbsp; However, in the bottom of the 7th,&amp;nbsp;Valencia hit a seeing-eye single to left (after which he left the game with tightness in his right hamstring OH GOOD ANOTHER HURT IMPORTANT GUY), which was followed by a Repko walk.&amp;nbsp; Ron Washington went to his bullpen, and that gave the Twins the opening they needed.&amp;nbsp; Singles by J.J. Hardy and Denard Span plated pinch-runner Matt Tolbert and Repko, putting the Twins ahead for good.
Matt Capps did the rest.&amp;nbsp; After Jon Rauch and Randy Flores labored to get one out in the 8th,&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;Capps entered the game with runners on the corners and got two rather clutch-y outs.&amp;nbsp; With the offense not giving him any breathing room in the bottom of the 8th, Capps got the first out of the 9th, then gave up a Chip Carey Special to Vladimir Guerrero.&amp;nbsp; With Alex Cora pinch-running for Guerrero, Pedro Borbon singled to right.&amp;nbsp; Cora attempted to take 3rd on the hit, and Repko GUNNED.&amp;nbsp; HIM.&amp;nbsp; DOWN.&amp;nbsp; One&amp;nbsp;fly ball out later, and Capps had the rare 5-out save.&amp;nbsp; His arm is being shipped to Cooperstown as I type this.
To recap: the Twins got 21 outs from two pitchers who were nowhere near Minneapolis 24 hours ago.&amp;nbsp; Their trade deadline closer got the last five.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;And they might have gotten their biggest win of the season.&amp;nbsp;
Studs: Fox, Alex Burnett (hey, four outs and one run in a pinch, could've been worse), Span and Repko on defense, Capps, Valencia, Jim Perry and Jim Kaat in the booth for FSN.
Duds: No duds tonight, I'm in a good mood.
Enjoy your long weekend, everybody.&amp;nbsp;
