"Why Pitchers Averages Mean Nothing"

M.G. Lloyd, Ph.D., on pitchers' win-loss records:The method at present in vogue in professional baseball leagues for rating pitchers is crude, unjust and almost ridiculous. ...It is true that more responsibility rests upon the pitcher than upon any one other man, but he has not as much power to decide the game as have the other eight combined. Any man on the team may throw away a game by his poor play, and many a pitcher has done work that would ordinarily win a game, only to have it lost by another player's errors. This is such common experience as to need no specific illustration. ...Even supposing the pitcher received perfect support from the fielders, he is powerless to win a game by pitching alone. To win, it is just as essential that his team shall do good work during their innings at bat ...Especially where pitchers are changed during a game is the present method unsatisfactory ... The entire game must be credited to one pitcher, and very often to the one who has had least to do with it. ... [I]t is really surprising to find such a primitive method applied in a sport which has been the foremost for so many years. How should a pitcher's average be determined? ... He should be judged solely by the effectiveness of his own work, regardless of whether his team is able to win the game.Baseball Magazine, November 1908

9.6.10 Pawtucket Red Sox v Syracuse Chiefs - Can I go back to bed, now?

4-3 Pawtucket! Do you like parties?Syracuse starter Erik Arnesen pitched the entire game. He threw 125 pitches in a game that didn't really count for anything. The Nationals must really hate him!Arnesen got three strikeouts and walked three. His bad, bad inning went down early, in the second. Jimenez walked and dashed over to second on a wild pitch and second baseman James Kang hit an RBI double. So simple.Josh Reddick followed all that up with a two run homer to make the score 3-0. The Red Sox slapped a fourth run onto the pile in the fourth, when Jimenez led off with a triple and Velazquez doubled to get him across home plate. Yay?Pawtucket starter Ramon Ramirez pitched himself 5 2/3 innings and gave up those three Syracuse runs. Only two were earned, because in the sixth inning, Ramirez tried to pick off Brian Bixler TWICE and messed it up, allowing him to skip over to second base, then third. How embarrassing.Relievers Tommy Hottovy, Chad Paronto, and Fernando Cabrera finished the rest of the game. Then everyone cried.feelings:1. Dusty Brown wound up playing left field from the fifth inning on. It was Brown's first time playing left this year and his first time in the outfield since one game on the Sea Dogs back in 2006.2. Bubba Bell and Mark Wagner both went 0-4.3. Pawtucket finished the year 66-78. In 2009, they finished 61-82. So... slight improvement, but possibly a much less interesting team. No Maldonado or Sean Danielson. No Marcus McBeth or Javier Lopez. And no Ron Johnson.4. I watched Gil Velazquez tossing squishy balls into the crowd and they traveled so far. And it just seemed so effortless. It must be so cool to be so athletic, for all that stuff to come easily. It reminded me that even guys like Paul McAnulty, Ivan Ochoa, Jorge Jimenez... They might look like a bunch of dum-dums but it's not easy and it's nothing that most people could ever do. What I am trying to say is that FUCKING GIL VELAZQUEZ, I AM GOING TO MISS THAT GUY.5. Some people got called up, but no one I really like. Ryan Kalish was exciting in Pawtucket, but his stay was far too brief.6. Some Erik Arnesen stuff here. He mentions his wife and you know what they say about that! 7. More on Arnesen from HHOTF. Good blog, good writer, hate the name of the blog. 8. Pete Orr and his mustache homered off Ramirez. So did Jamie Burke... Jamie Burke is older than I am. He was drafted by the California Angels, is how old Jamie Burke is. He played on the Edmonton Trappers, is how old.Tonight! FREEDOM!!!!! No more Kris Johnson and Aaron Bates. Thank you all for coming. I'll do some end of the year stuff soon.So... What do you want to talk about?

Going into the game tonight, the Red Sox' lineup spoke of surrender. Ryan Kalish, Lars Anderson, and Yamaico Navarro were batting 7th, 8th, and 9th respective while Daniel Nava was in the leadoff spot.
Well, Navarro could only manage a sacrifice fly, and Lars Anderson certainly looked overmatched in his Major League debut.
But Daniel Nava got on base three times, and Kalish...Well, Kalish walked, he singled, and he took a 3-1 Andy Sonnanstine fastball and deposited in the bleacher seats. With the bases loaded.
It was Kalish' second career grand slam in under 100 at bats, and while it was perhaps the loudest hit of the night, the fact is that the game was already all-but-over by that point.
After Jon Lester ran into some more first inning trouble, allowing Tampa to get on the board first with a run, Boston came out shooting in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Victor Martinez drew a walk, setting up David Ortiz for the first homer of the night, curling around Pesky's Pole. Three pitches later, and Adrian Beltre swatted the second into the monster seats.
The Sox didn't let up at all in the second, either. A parade of, again, two out baserunners resulted in three runs thanks to a Victor Martinez single and David Ortiz double. Ortiz would add two walks in a very successful night. Jeff Niemann fled the game with just five outs recorded, and six runs allowed.
After allowing runs in the first and third innings, Lester settled down, and actually ended up with a pretty nice line for the night, including his third straight game with ten strikeouts. Lester was pulled with just 95 pitches thrown through the first six innings, giving Terry Francona a chance to get a look at some of the young guys and call-ups. What he saw was not pretty.
Out came Robert Coello, the most recent call-up from Triple-A Pawtucket, and an alumnus of the same independent league of Daniel Nava. And with him came baserunners. The Rays surrounded a flyout with a trio of singles, loading the bases. What followed was almost as funny as it was sad.
After fighting Brad Hawpe to a full count, Coello gave up a bases loaded walk on the seventh pitch of the at bat. Four pitches later, and he walked in hitless rookie Desmond Jennings. In came Dustin Richardson, and in walked another run. Finally, Tito called on Scott Atchison, who recorded five mercifully quiet outs. Hideki Okajima followed it up with a quiet ninth, giving the Red Sox the 12-5 win.
No matter how "out" of it you think the Sox are, it's always nice to beat up on a rival. All the better when it's the kids getting the job done. Here's to another rout of Tampa tomorrow.

But he should have a good shot at rebounding, because the Sox are employing the "surrender lineup." That's right, if you still have faith that this team is going to the postseason, well, you're even more optimistic than the Sox themselves.

Lineup
Tampa Bay Rays @ Boston Red Sox

Tampa Bay Rays Boston Red Sox

B.J. Upton - CF
Daniel Nava - LF

Rocco Baldelli - DH

Yamaico Navarro - SS

At least it should be interesting, though. All four of those bottom guys are potentially big parts of the future.
Go Sox rookies! And Lowrie! And Lester! And the rest of them too I guess!
If Beltre hits 30 dingers and drives in 100, can he be some kind of Type-AA free agent maybe? Possibly? I know Elias likes that kind of stuff. And I like draft picks!

Jason Varitek will rejoin the Red Sox' active roster for the first time since June, as Scott Lauber is reporting that the Captain will be activated from the disabled list tonight after a two game rehab stint in Pawtucket.
Varitek has been out since breaking his foot in the June 30 game against the Rays. It had been something of a resurgent year for Tek, who was finding a great deal more success with the added rest that came with his backup role, hitting .263/.324/.547.
The question now becomes how the playing time situation will work out. With the Red Sox' focus shifting to the future and seeing how the call-ups perform, Jarrod Saltalamacchia would seem to be the priority now. It might be hard Tek to come across at bats as the season wears down.

So Manny Thoughts

1. Don and Jerry were doing some "hey, look, Manny showed effort there, haha" bullcrap over the weekend. So they have to point out when he "tries," when meanwhile we have guys on our team who never run out ground balls but get a pass because they don't have weird hair.2. Don brought up the question of whether the Sox thought about picking up Manny last week when he was on waivers. Remy was quick to say No and Don agreed that the team, especially Tito, was "done" with Manny. Now flash back to when the team claimed Johnny Damon a few weeks ago. Larry Lucchino was on the pre-game saying how the they strictly do things to improve the ballclub, not based on emotions or anything else. So are Don and Remy trying to tell us that our team, with so much money and in need of offense, didn't even think about trying to acquire one of the great hitters when we went on waivers? And if that's true, are they proud of it?3. I hope the realization set in to some of the people who booed Manny (WEEI employees and their families being a big chunk of those) that when we had Manny, we would, ya know, win the World Series and stuff. I mean, when 2010 ends, are these people gonna go to bed with a satisfied smile on their faces and say, Well at least we don't have to "put up with" that awesome hitter anymore....?Red Sox vs. Tampa, 7:10 p.m.

G138: Rays at Red Sox, 7 PM

Jeff Neimann / Jon LesterNava, LFDrew, RFMartinez, COrtiz, DHBeltre, 3BLowrie, 2BKalish, CFAnderson, 1BNavarro, SSLars Anderson makes his major league debut. Josh Reddick has also been called up. Pawtucket's season ended yesterday.Everyone knows Boston's post-season chances are thisclose to nil -- the projections at BP (2.1%, 0.9%, 1.7%) and Cool Standings (1.1%) reflect that. Plus, the White Sox's weekend sweep pushed the Red Sox into 3rd place for the wild card.Back on September 1, YFSF looked at the rest of the season:If I were a Sox fan who had not yet given up on this season, I would be hoping the Sox can get through next week's home series against the Rays and return home on September 16 from their 6-game stint in Oakland and Seattle no more than 6 back of the Yankees. The Yanks will be entering arguably their toughest stretch of the year ... Boston would be banking on making up the bulk of ground in those final two weeks. But ... what if the Red Sox swept the Rays? They would be 4.5 GB Tampa Bay with 22 games to play. Would that do anything for you?Since that post last Wednesday, the Red Sox have not helped their cause at all, going 2-3 and losing another two games in the standings. ... Being 6 GB on September 16 wouldn't guarantee a damn thing, of course, plus it would involve picking up 4.5 games in 10 games (11 days) -- and continuing to steamroll. ... Yeah, a 1.3% shot seems about right. ... Just win one game, tonight's game, and all that, etc.Anyway ... Neimann was on the DL (right shoulder strain) for most of August. He has made two starts since returning -- allowing 17 runs in 8.1 innings -- and seen his ERA rise by nearly a full run, to 3.97.Pop SensationAL East: Orioles/Yankees, 1 PM

The Space Man Vs. The Ged Man

When I found out Bill Lee would be pitching for the Brockton Rox of the Can-Am League, I immediately got tickets for me and Kim. Bonus: The Rox would be playing the Worcester Tornadoes--Rich Gedman's team! Above, The Spaceman chats with fans from the bullpen before the game.I got that shot from the left field warning track, because they allowed us to play catch before the game in the outfield. (Kim and I had a hard ball but used the tennis ball they gave us, with the mysterious letters "ET" on it.) I guess Rocky Marciano and Marvelous Marvin Hagler are from Brockton. On the field at Brockton on a sunburny day.Now at our $9.50 seats, watching Bill stretch in the outfield.Rich Gedman in the vistors' dugout.Geddy exchanges lineup cards with the Rox dude. Oh, and as I was entering the field earlier, Rich himself was entering from behind me (coming from that same spot in the stands for some reason), and he practically knocked me out of the way as I stood there waiting for the Slow Family in front of me to go so I could get my tennis ball! It was pretty funny....This club has a 7-woman cheerleading squad, and the players actually take the field one-by-one as they're introduced, running through them. Bill Lee was brought out via automobile.Another Gedman shot. I see he's still coaching third for this team he manages--just like when Pat, Brian, Chan and I saw them at Waconah Park around 2003.Lee on the field.First pitch of the game, Bill throws the Leephus. Guy whacks it into left for a single. What's this "22" pin on Geddy's hat?The "Rox" like you to make noise, which they call "thunder," and seem to have a "kangaroo" as a mascot. Anybody have any clue here?Spaceman on the hill. He gave up a solo homer, but that was it until the fifth, when he gave up the game-tying run with two outs. The Rox then got the lead back in bottom 5, but Bill wasn't done, pitching into the 6th. He also batted! Here he is after making an out. He made contact three times but was thrown out at first each time.Bill got the WIN, and even made some Tornadoes look foolish up there. And the crowd loved him. You can tell he has a little trouble running--but no way in hell is that gonna stop him from playing ball.Minor league ball is supposed to be cheesy, with the wacky races, hipster doofus emcees, and family-friendly carnival atmosphere. I know that going in. But I wish for once they'd just can it with that shit and let the real entertainer hold court. Yes, they announced Bill Lee's name with fanfare a thousand times--they knew who the crowd was there for (they even had to start the game 15 minutes late to accommodate the extra fans)--but how cool would it have been to at least get to hear Bill's banter as he walked off the field before starting the blaring dance music? George Carlin used to say how people wore headphones all the time because they're afraid of their own thoughts. Why can't the sounds of a baseball game be enough? I'm referring to all parks, major, minor, and independent leagues. Ask a hundred baseball fans what they'd rather hear between innings, that "Everybody Dance Now" song for the millionth time, or the sound of ball hitting glove as the pitcher warms up. I guarantee that of the 10 who didn't miss your question because they were too busy texting meaningless garbage to nobody, at least 7 would choose against C&C Music Factory. Though I still feel bad for that Martha Wash.As for the Red Sox ticket I couldn't use because of this event? Sweet Geddy Lee did I make the right choice....[Thanks to Joy of Sox for making me aware of Lee pitching for Brockton.]

NESN's Mission: Annoy All Its Viewers All The Time

We recently saw (thanks to Laura) how many commercials and advertisements NESN packs into every Red Sox broadcast. The network added a new wrinkle this afternoon in its relentless drive to annoy its viewers with as much non-baseball crap as possible.Nearly every time Don Orsillo read an in-game commercial or promo, Jerry Remy offered some commentary. He told us how much he loves the sponsor or how he was reminded to use a particular product or visit a store or he wanted to encourage us to visit the store.Every time Don started a spot, I waited for Jerry to chime in. And he did! Every. Single. Time. I cannot recall hearing this kind of forced banter before. Usually, Orsillo reads the bits and we get back to the baseball game. While I found it utterly amazing, especially as I was waiting for each one in the middle innings, it also made the broadcast virtually unlistenable. What follows is most of the incidents. It's disgraceful that NESN is forcing its announcers to perform addendums to the commercials instead of calling the game and discussing the Red Sox -- and Orsillo and Remy should have enough clout to object to this embarrassing behaviour. (Either they did not object or they lost the battle with the network.) I'm sure NESN hopes that Orsillo's and Remy's popular booth banter will disguise the advertisements somewhat, but that plan was an utter failure on Sunday.Start of top of 2nd, (Dunkin Donuts):Remy: I love that apple pie!Orsillo: Really?Remy: Oh, delicious!Orsillo (suppressing a giggle as Remy seemed a bit too excited): I'll have to try it out.Top of 2nd, Kotsay batting (NESN program with Charlie Moore):Remy: Ahh, that should be fun, from beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee.Bottom of 2nd, after Hall walks (CVS Pharmacy):Remy: I have to stop in at CVS after the game. I got a few things to pick up before we head out on the next road trip.Orsillo: I already did today.Remy: Yeah, I know!Top of 3rd, Rios batting:Remy: I was thinking about that Overstocked promo, you know, where they get to flip the numbers on the scoreboard. That's the Ultimate Fan Experience. I think the Ultimate Fan Experience would be able to sit in the dugout during a game, wouldn't you say?Top of 3rd, Quentin batting (Monster Money/Mass State Lottery):Remy: I play that all the time. Haven't hit yet, but will continue to play.Orsillo: You can't win if you don't play.Remy: I said I play it all the time!Orsillo: I know, that's what I'm saying. You got to keep playing.Bottom of 3rd, Ortiz batting (NESN show Pocket Money):Remy: You know, I've got to start to watch all three of those shows. We just haven't had time.Orsillo: I know, with the day-night doubleheader and everything else, the road.Remy: Ten o'clock tonight, I've got to put on Pocket Money. And I need to see the other two new shows, too. I have not seen them yet.Orsillo: Shining City and, of course, After The Game.Remy: Right.Orsillo: You're all over it tonight, though.Remy: Yeah, there's nothing on tonight.Start of top of 4th (Cumberland Farms):Remy: Really good stuff. Really good stuff. 79 cents -- can't beat that.Orsillo: Cannot beat it. The Chill Zone.Bottom of 4th, Vizquel batting (Beth Israel Deaconess First Aid Stand):Remy: Let's hope you don't, but if you do, you are in good hands.Orsillo: Right here at the ball park, in case you need it.Start of top of 5th (Red Sox Monster Mondays):Remy: That's basically a whole half-hour of Tom Caron at 5:30, leading up to the pre-game show.Orsillo (very quietly): It's not all Tom Caron.Remy: Wha?Orsillo: It's not all Tom Caron.Remy: Well, it's an awful lot of Tom Caron.Orsillo: There's a segment at 5:35 that isn't Tom Caron. It's 2-1, White Sox on top of the Red Sox.Remy (Kif Krokeresque): Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh ...Orsillo: As we head to the bottom of the fourth inning. Bill Hall.Remy: Yes, make sure you tune in early, because --Orsillo (laughing): Really early.Remy: Don Orsillo is on very early. His hit is at 5:36. ... So be sure to tune in early.Top of 5th, after Rios grounds out (Boston Globe):Remy: You know, I went all through that Globe today, this morning, from front page to back page. And I looked at the jobs, just in case. You never know what might happen.Bottom of 5th, Lowrie batting (Red Sox online shop):Remy: I check that every day, I'm looking for that perfect gift.Bottom of 5th, Ortiz batting (NESN Daily):Remy: I actually saw you on that show one time. You did a hit for it. Saw it on the website.Top of 6th, after Ramirez grounds out (three NESN shows (again)):Remy (excitedly): Oh! Well, that works out just perfect, because after the game, I'm going to have some dinner.Orsillo: Where you gonna eat?Remy: I can't say.(Right! Because the restaurant hasn't ponied up some $$$ to NESN!)Top of 6th, Beckham batting (Covidien/Red Sox Foundation "helping to address health needs in our communities"):Remy: And they do a wonderful job!Bottom of 6th, after Lowell grounds out (Benjamin Moore Paint):Remy: You know, I didn't know about that stain until we started reading the promos this year. So I tried it out on the deck in the back of the condo I have.Orsillo: Outstanding?Remy: Unbelievable. And the way it holds up to the water is incredible. There were a few others, though they were minor. Remy noted that the Dunkin' Donuts Dugout had "good seats" and he informed us that you could "follow his [Don's] every move" on NESN's website. And I swear Remy also noted that there was "nothing like a cold Sam Adams" at some point in the first 45 minutes of the game (I posted about it in the game thread), but I could not find it in the archived broadcast. This "banter" pretty much stopped in the top of the seventh. It looked like NESN started off slowly, maybe one per half-inning, before cranking it up in the middle innings. Then they left the last few innings alone, on the off chance they were eventful or tense.NESN is making a huge mistake if it continues overshadowing the game with advertising. It was glaringly apparent what was going on and it detracted greatly from the broadcast. Its very existence was annoying enough, but Remy's stupid banter was the exact opposite of his on-air personality. What will NESN's next great idea be -- adding a whooping sitcom laugh track to the play-by-play?You can contact NESN at sports@nesn.com or 617-536-9233.

Got out of the independent league game (more on that later!) we went to a little after 4, and heard Castig describing a horrible inning where Chicago took the lead on infield hits, stolen bases, and two errors by two Boston pitchers. But then Victor donged and we led again. Then we got all the way to a restaurant near our house, an hour away, and had a two-run lead, one out, top 9. Went in to get take-out. Got back to the car, and O'Brien was describing a crazy play where nobody covered second and a run scored to cut it to one, with two outs. Finally got home to actually see the end of the game, which consisted of us walking in several more runs, and going down quietly in the bottom of the ninth. Loss. Swept. The other two lost today. We play three against Tampa now. Better sweep that one....

If the Chicago White Sox end up winning the AL Central, Sunday's victory may be a game that's talked about as the key to their late-season run. Gordon Beckham's bases-loaded walk with two outs pushed Chicago ahead in a four-run ninth inning that lifted the White Sox to their sixth straight win and an improbable 7-5 comeback victory over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday.

After losing both ends of a doubleheader 3-1, the Red Sox suffered another two run loss at the hands of the White Sox, dropping the final game of the series 7-5.
In many ways this was the Red Sox' game to lose, and they certainly did so. The offense came through well enough off of a good pitcher in Mark Buehrle, as David Ortiz brought in two runs with a double in the third inning to take an early lead, and Victor Martinez again pushed the Red Sox ahead with a two run homer in the seventh. Bill Hall even added a fifth run in the eighth inning thanks to Adrian Beltre's leadoff double.
But man, this game got screwed up in a hurry.
Josh Beckett, to his credit, pitched quite well. He was a little hittable, but struck out nine batters in just over six innings, and hadn't walked anyone until the seventh.
That's when things went wrong. With 100 pitches on his arm already, Beckett came back out to start the inning, but clearly didn't have much left, giving up a four pitch walk to the leadoff man Juan Pierre. But Francona stuck with him, and after recording one more out, Beckett allowed a second four pitch walk to Alex Rios before being yanked.
In came Daniel Bard. The second out came quickly with a strikeout of Paul Konerko, but Carlos Quentin wasn't about to go down so quietly. A hard-hit ground ball came back to Bard, who threw up his glove defensively. The ball bounced towards third, Bard fired a rocket to first, and somewhere in the mix, it ended up knocked down and dribbling away from Mike Lowell. Two runs scored on the infield single.
Still, Bard was far from taxed. One pitchout lead to a caught stealing, and Bard went into the eighth inning with only ten pitches. And yet, for some reason, he was pulled for Hideki Okajima. After giving up a leadoff single and recording one out, in came Jonathan Papelbon for a five out save he was not quite up to.
The rest of the eighth went down cleanly enough. A 2-2 pitch grazed Manny Ramirez, pinch hitting for Mark Kotsay, but a strikeout and a flyout got the job done.
The ninth is where things fell apart completely. With a 5-3 lead, things looked OK for the Sox, but with two outs and a runner on second, Papelbon was gassed. On his 40th pitch, he gave up a double to Carlos Quentin. On his 41st, a game-tying single to Ramon Castro. Still, Francona left him in, leading to a walk of Alexei Ramirez.
Finally, Tito turned to the rest of the pen, but it was hardly the right time. The pressure was on, the go-ahead run was in scoring position, and Dustin Richardson and Robert Manuel could do nothing but walk guys. Three straight free passes later, and the White Sox had a 7-5 lead. The Red Sox went down in order in the ninth to finish things off.

Red Sox September Call-Ups Continue With Robert Coello

Meet the newest Paw Sox player to get the call: Robert Coello.
A 25-year-old right handed pitcher, Robert Coello was picked up off the Golden League scrapheap after being cut by the Angels when he failed to impress them with his conversion from catching. So far, things have worked out pretty nicely with the Red Sox, as Coello has become a big strikeout pitcher, with 130 Ks in just 107 innings so far this year. He's prone to the walk, though, with 44 in the same period.
While Coello struggled with a Triple-A promotion to begin with, since converting to a reliever, he has held opponents to just 3 runs in nearly 20 innings.

Is it wrong that I kind of want the Red Sox to lose this one 1-3 too, just so we can say it happened.
For that to happen, Josh Beckett will have to keep his ERA somewhere below the 6.21 it's at.

6-1 Yankees. Rich Hill could not do it like he did it last time. The Yankees got nine hits off him and scored five times. Hill couldn't get out of the sixth inning. Today I would rather play solitaire than do this, but here goes. David Phelps got the start for the Yankees and pitched eight tight innings, throwing 95 pitches. Pawtucket only scared up one run on five hits. Nothing exciting, just Jimenez grounding out in the second inning after a couple of singles. Congratulations, Phelps. You beat the PawSox. So back to Rich Hill. He only had one run going into the sixth inning. Hill walked Miranda to get things started then gave up a single to Jorge Vazquez. Laird and Bruntlett hit consecutive RBI singles. Edwar Gonzalez TRIED to follow suit, but Bubba Bell threw him out at home, which must have been cool even though the inning had already gone to pot.Chad Paronto... I mean, who doesn't like Paronto, but he's no Robert Manuel. He's not even Fernando Cabrera. Paronto had a couple of runners on for Reid Gorecki, who decided it would be a great time to hit a double. And he did, scoring Bruntlett and Gonzalez. Paronto also gave up a home run to Vazquez in the seventh to make it 6-1. Yeah.Pawtucket really could have used Darnell McDonald this year.comatose tomatoes:1. Chad Paronto is also no Santo Luis, who pitched a clean ninth. Aside from the walks, that is.2. ?Phelps had great command and threw the ball well,? Yankee manager Dave Miley said. ?He did a good job of using all his pitches.? - from the Wilkes-Barre paper. Thank you for the world's most boring post-game comment, Mister Miley.3. David Phelps is Irish and he hates walks.4. Scott Walsh filled in for Donnie Collins. Thanks for ruining my day. Walsh's live blog includes stuff like this: "Sorry for not updating sooner. Working on some stuff for the newspaper." Okay, thanks! The Red Sox are back in town and playing Syracuse. So enjoy these last two games.
