Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson agreed Friday to a one-year extension of his contract, which now runs through 2016. Johnson initially signed a seven-year contract worth about $11 million when he came from Navy before the 2008 season. The school gave him a new seven-year, $17.7 million deal after he led the Yellow Jackets to a surprising nine wins in his debut.

WEEK 12 PICKS: A WEEK SO SPARSE WE ARE MOVED TO HAIKU

This week’s crop of picks covers a week so sparse and uninviting lichen might turn its most noselike organelles up at it. Thus, we return to the quiet, spare austerity of Japan’s ancient poetry form, the haiku, to express our emotions regarding week 12’s slate…which is mostly, like the majority of haiku, about staring at not much happening whatsover.

Storybook Season Unfolding in Cincinnati

by Terence MooreFiled under: Cincinnati
CINCINNATI -- Go ahead. Combine Florida, Alabama, Texas and TCU, the only four teams ahead of Cincinnati in the BCS standings. Now throw in the rest of the programs throughout college football, and it still won't matter.

You won't find a collection of teams -- let alone one individually -- with more riveting stories than those surrounding Cincinnati. Come to think of it, the 2009 Bearcats have the best set of storylines of all-time for a season. Despite a wretched existence during their 123 years of playing football at a place more noted for the guy who designed the Golden Gate Bridge and Oscar Robertson, the Bearcats are in the national championship discussion with a 10-0 record out of nowhere.

That's the best of those stories.Storybook Season Unfolding in Cincinnati originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Fri, 20 Nov 2009 15:35:00 EST .
Irish, UConn seek to end losing streaks (AP)

Notre Dame and Connecticut keep coming up a play short. They do it in dramatically different styles, but the common theme heading into their game on Saturday is this: Their seasons could be drastically different if someone could have come up with a key tackle, catch or run. The Huskies (4-5) keep getting ahead and finding ways to lose.

No. 14 Stanford confident for Big Game (AP)

When Toby Gerhart arrived at Stanford in 2006 there was more talk about whether the Cardinal should field a major college football team than about the farfetched possibility of going to the Rose Bowl. Stanford went 1-11 in Gerhart's freshman year under coach Walt Harris, losing eight games by at least 21 points.

MICHIGAN VERSUS OHIO STATE: AN EDSBS INSTANT PARTISANSHIP GUIDE

By percentages, you don’t have a dog in the fight in the Michigan/Ohio State game, but no one leans on the rape stand and watches a bitter contest like this with the aloof demeanor of a neutral bystander. You get in there, but up into the crowd, and sidle up to the edge of the ring and throw some ducats on the hound of your choice. Like many dogfights, the Ohio State/Michigan game could be broken up in a flurry of tear gas and jogging policemen, so pick lively and be on your toes for the kickoff tomorrow with our handy guide
Drink:

This hat was made from the beer consumed between 10:14 a.m. and 10:46 a.m. From an ode to Busch Light.
IF: 24 pack of Busch light: THEN: Ohio State. We’ve never seen people drink more shitty beer with greater voracity than Ohio State fans. Never. Not at LSU, not at Alabama, not at Georgia, not at Florida (where beer, liquor, and “whatever your friends from Miami had in a dropper” get thrown into a single vomitous swirl.) Nowhere is there a greater thirst for building a solid fellatio cabana from lowgrade hops and barley than in Columbus. If your happiness comes in a flimsy box with a convenient pulltab corner for machine-gun disbursal, you pull for the Buckeyes here.
IF: Bell’s Beer: THEN: Michigan. The craft beer thing was coming here and you knew it, but for posterity’s sake let’s get it right and say that like good beer snobs, Michiganders go local and pimp local brands like Bell’s Brewery.
Music
IF: Morrissey/Smiths: THEN: Michigan. That joke isn’t funny anymore, especially if it involves losing a sixth straight game to Ohio State.

IF: Nickelback: THEN: Ohio State. It’s less a specific prescription than an overall vibe. Arena rock never died, it just moved to Ohio, where it still sells like flyswatters in a refugee camp. Deny it if you like, but Nickelback will get the blood pumping, especially their live stuff. We’re especially fond of this one.

Philosophical School:
IF: Chuck Palahniuk:
"It’s easy to cry when you realize that everyone you love will reject you or die.”
THEN: Michigan.
IF: Red Foreman:

Well, it's a tough world, Eric, and people don't always get what they want. Especially you.
THEN: Ohio State.
The 1950s:
IF:“Thesis: The 1950s were a simmering cauldron of social change, an underexamined pressure cooker of cultural tension, political realignment, and economic expansion whose momentum was not merely a factor in the great upheaval of the 1960s, but a continuation of it. In this paper we will examine these changes as reflected in the music of Bob Seger, whose own compositions reflect this dichotomous sense/memory of the two decades: one held sacrosanct in the common memory for its alleged innocence (see “Night Moves” or “Down on Main Street,”), and another lauded for its freewheeling excesses and exotic leanings (see “Kathmandu.”) Through the eyes of one of America’s most neglected cultural icons, we will illustrate how music can form a tight emotional bond between a historical era and even the most inaccurate representations of its realities (and, indeed, its falsehoods.)
THEN: Michigan.
IF: “‘ ‘the fuck, dude?”
THEN: Ohio State.
The reason you have a goatee.
IF: “That’s an odd question…because it does give off a certain “don’t touch me” vibe, and because the beard isn’t growing in so well, and the goatee–prior to its appropriation by the middle classes as a sign of rebellion in the late 1980s and its subsequent slide into its current status as the mustache of the 2000s (not to be confused with the ironic mustache of the 2000s–what was I saying? Oh, my girlfriend likes it, and it gives me something to stroke when I’m thinking, that’s all. That’s the simple answer.”
THEN: Michigan.
IF: “Because it owns, pussy.”
THEN: Ohio State.

We’ve been shy on liveblogs this year because of travel schedules, life in general, and the big Yahoo liveblog running on the Thursday night game. When they do happen, we tend to announce them about three seconds ahead of time, and recruit our comment militia on an ad hoc basis on an even shorter notice. So, they’ve been infrequent, and for that we apologize.
If you would like to know when the next scheduled one is, we can oblige. It will be for the greatest event of the bowl game lull: the debut of Rakontur’s “The U,” the documentary about the rise of the University of Miami’s football program in the 1980s. Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 9 p.m. on ESPN.

Our expectations cannot possibly be met, since the Rakontur crew also put together Cocaine Cowboys, the epic coke documentary that taught us that success does not begin until you have enough money to support the care and upkeep of two full grown mountain lions wandering our mansion (purchased in cash.) It should still be impressive enough on its own, especially since Schnelly is involved.
Also, if this one fails to live up to our fantasies of the U’s blood-orgy beginnings, we still have the trailer for Dawg Fight, their upcoming documentary on the Perrine Backyard Boxing Scene. Given their already stellar track record, Rakontur is the clear leader to win the rights to our unpublished but insane screenplay for an unfilmable epic about the rise of the Wu-Tang Clan. We finished the scene where Gordon Ramsay steals Raekwon’s coq au vin recipe last night, thus forcing Raekwon to turn to a life of hard crime and rap hustle on the streets instead of pursuing his dream of attending Le Cordon Bleu. Powerful, powerful stuff.

by Terrance HarrisFiled under: Baylor, Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Texas, Texas Tech, Big 12The Big 12 North remains a ways from returning to the prominence it enjoyed when the conference first formed in the late 1990s, but if Saturday's matchup between Kansas State and Nebraska for the division title is any indication then better days are certainly on the horizon. After years of struggles by the Kansas State Wildcats and the Nebraska Cornhuskers, which have coincided with a dip in the North's strength, the two meet Saturday in Lincoln for a winner-take-all showdown. Neither team has had quite the season it anticipated but each has won enough for the right to play for the Big 12 championship, likely against No. 2 Texas, Dec. 5. "Certainly we've been in this position before, probably in different ways," said veteran Wildcats coach Bill Snyder, who broke out of a three-year retirement to return to the sidelines this season. "By the same token, I can't remember other than the very early years that playing against the Nebraska teams was not a great challenge and certainly key ball games were after those initial years after they beat us so soundly."Big 12 North Gets Nostalgic originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Fri, 20 Nov 2009 08:00:00 EST .
Oklahoma State Rallies Past Colorado

by Terrance HarrisFiled under: Colorado, Oklahoma State, Big 12The Oklahoma State Cowboys rallied in the second half to defeat Colorado, 31-28, on Thursday night at Boone Pickens Stadium to remain in contention for their first BCS bowl. With Zac Robinson sitting out the game due to a shoulder injury, the 12th-ranked Cowboys (9-2, 6-1 Big 12) turned to junior Alex Cate but it was third-string sophomore Brandon Weeden who rallied them from a 21-10 deficit against the struggling Buffaloes. Weeden completed 10 of 15 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns. His 28-yard touchdown pass to Justin Blackmon while rolling right gave the Oklahoma State Cowboys the lead for good with 8:11 remaining in the game. Weeden also had a 47-yard touchdown throw to running back Keith Toston earlier in the second half.Oklahoma State Rallies Past Colorado originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Thu, 19 Nov 2009 23:32:00 EST . Nick Saban. Mack Brown. Brian Kelly. The Patterson/Petersen duo, Gary and Chris. None of them have had even half the stories being written about them that Weis does even though all five of them have guided their teams to undefeated seasons thus far. Weis' team, as you know, is but 6-4.Daily Domer: Rubber-Necking the Irish originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Thu, 19 Nov 2009 16:00:00 EST .
