Does hockey have potties?

Sorry. That's the question my daughter asked when she had to go during the second period. We didn't actually arrive at the game tonight until 7:30 (2 minutes left in the first period) due to my daughter's 6:30 swim class. We had all four of us tonight and fun was to be had by all. The kids really got into the game and both teams decided to wait until we got there to start scoring. Definitely a win on both counts.I'm finding it hard to believe that Brad Isbister found a spot on Vancouver's roster. It's a credit to the Canes' depth at forward that this guy couldn't even secure an AHL call-up spot for us and he's playing on another team's regular roster. The guys played very well today - the highlight was definitely the gorgeous cross-ice pass from El Capitan to Rosie the Riveter for a beautiful goal past Luongo.I won't be at the Buffalo game on Wednesday, so I'll have to catch it on TV.

Curious effort

I had to sell my tickets tonight because of kid logistical issues, but it's on at the house. And an interesting game it is. The Canes played like complete ass for the first two period then decided, on a whim, to be completely dominant in the third. Luckily, the lack of anything resembling effort in the first two periods left them tied at two, so when they decided to show up it turned a close game into a blowout. I'm not sure whether to be angry because they were lucky to be close after two or impressed that they can play that poorly for as long as they did and still be in position to win (and by a lot). They just scored number six and the rout is on (Tripp said it just as I did). I can only shake my head. If they had this effort in the first two, the score might be even worse than it is currently.

Ranking your fandom

Or is it fanhood? Fandemonium? Whatever. Happy Halloween all.I was listening to the local talk radio show yesterday (Dave Glen on 850) and there was an interesting discussion on what peoples' favorite sports were. Everyone has their gut answer, but when you look at it from a different perspective, that can change. The first deliniation made was are you a fan of a sport or a team? The question asked was this - if your favorite team was not playing, would you watch a game? This is the question that bothered the host, because he considered himself a huge baseball fan, but really he was a huge Phillies fan. The difference is very important. (I'll bring this back to hockey - don't worry)For example, I'll only watch college basketball if either:a) my team (NC State) is playing - I'm alumnib) it's the ACC or NCAA tournamentI'll watch the high profile events and I'll watch my team, but I'm not a fan of "college basketball" as a whole. I won't watch the NBA at all, even the finals. So, with respect to basketball, I'm not a fan. I have a passing interest in the college game due to my school affiliation.I've also found that there are certain sports I will watch in the playoffs (as the above example shows, with the tourneys) but not in the regular season. Despite the best efforts of ESPN to hype the hell out of it, I can't bring myself to sit down and watch a regular season UNC/Duke matchup. Good basketball or not, I have better things to do. Maybe the last five minutes if it's a close game. So, my rankings of my favorite sports (along with reasons):NHL - I'll watch anyone playing, time permitting, regular season or playoffs.NFL - Again, I'll pretty much watch any game, although I tend to lean towards games where I have a rooting interest somewhere (whether it's the Panthers or some fantasy impact). Still, I love watching football. After the big two it's a bit of a dropoff.College football - I'll watch NC State games and, if with friends who cheer for another school, the game featuring that school. I have a good friend who is a Florida grad, so I've watched some games with him while our kids play.College basketball - I'm an NC State fan and I'll catch the post-season stuff (ACC tourney and NCAA tourney), but I won't watch anything outside of that spectrum.MLB - My main problem here is I don't have a rooting interest in anyone. When I was younger I followed the Mets a bit, but I have a huge disconnect with them right now (location and family-wise). I'll watch the playoffs if I have the time, but I never watch the regular season.International soccer - whether it's the World Cup or some international friendly (are any of them really friendly? Really?), I'll put this on if it's there. I'll watch non-US matches because usually it's a better product, and I've been known to go out of my way from time to time in order to catch a World Cup match during working hours. One of my best friends is a huge soccer guy though, so I end up getting dragged into watching more than I would normally anyway.7+ (in no particular order)MLS - In passing, I'll watch this. I went to a Columbus/Salt Lake match a few months back with my friend (see #5) while I was visiting in Ohio. MMA - I don't really "follow" it, but I'll watch it if it's on and the kids are elsewhere.Tennis - I don't really like it all that much, but I don't dislike it either. It just sort of is.Golf - I don't care for it that much, but I've tried it and I can appreciate it a bit. My dad loved it and I kind of keep a special place aside just for that reason, but I'm not really passionate about the sport. Any sport where you play against the course and not your opponent is a little lesser in my eyes anyway.AFL - Arena league is alright, but seems to be to football as foosball is to soccer, for what it's worth.Things I have little to no interest in:NBA - there is nothing there that I care about. I see these highlight packages on ESPN and some dunk makes the top three and it's a 7 foot guy putting the ball in a 10 foot rim. BFD. If I was 7 feet tall I could dunk too. NASCAR - car go round and round and round and so on...Women's sports - I've been able to watch soccer, hockey, and volleyball, but that's about it. It's just not that appealing to me. Maybe that'll change as my daughter gets older - who knows?"Action" sports - Just seems stupid to me. Whatever.Olympics - Remember when the games used to mean something? Other than hockey during the winter olympics and soccer during the summer, this just doesn't hold my interest anymore. Gymnastics? Track and Field? Yawn.Boxing - if I want fixed fights, I'll play a video game.

The Florida Whiners returned to face the Hurricanes last night and the Hurricanes came out with a victory. I was hoping for four more goals by the good guys to drive the point home. Was it enough to counter the rampant Mickey Mouse diving-centric load of crap from the other night? Not by a long shot. The Canes need to post another 7-1 record against the Whiners (who can only win if they influence the ref beforehand into making questionable calls at critical junctures). The Whiners need to not make the playoffs. Again. The Canes need to clinch something (playoff spot, southeast division, president's cup, or some Florida team record losing streak) against the Whiners in Florida.March 20th seems like a good date for any or all of these things to happen.

Clockwork

The strange thing about the game tonight is that Washington actually seemed to dominate the first period in every way except for the score board. Their fore check was very persistent and they were causing turnovers and all sorts of trouble down low. Of course, the Canes' first two power plays were so smooth that they looked like they were scripted. Washington seemed absolutely stunned at how quickly and efficiently the puck was moved and put into the net. The third goal by Stillman, completing the natural hat trick, was a beautiful two-on-one really set free by a punishing check by Tim Gleason on Brian Sutherby (if memory serves).Ovechkin was everywhere for the Caps and really made his presence felt. Ward denied him time and time again and I know it frustrated the Russian, like it did with all of his team mates. That frustration may have led to Brashear's stupid boarding major. It's hard to say what was going through his mind though. Anyway, the Canes are performing like they need to be right now and they get to look forward to hosting Tampa on Friday.

Selling out

This is not a post about people in seats.I don't know what it is about Bubba over at CanesCountry, but he manages more so than anyone else to post or link to something on his blog that will get me worked up and needing to respond. The recent topic stems from a Q&A session with Joe Ovies of 850 the Buzz and the comments generated from that column. This whole fascination the blogging world has with media credentials and getting an inside peak is interesting to me, but probably from a different perspective than the rest of the community. What is there to gain by doing it? Really. The key selling point of the blogging community is that we're not the media. We have a hell of a lot more freedom to post a certain angle or perspective that many in the mainstream media cannot get away with. The more bloggers try to "gain respect" within the framework of the mainstream media, the more they have to adhere by certain guidelines and behaviors, and the closer the bloggers are to becoming incorporated to that mainstream.I was happy to go on 850 several weeks back with Bubba and Joe, but I didn't do it to somehow legitimize my blog or anything like that. I did it because I thought it would be fun and interesting.I really do have a lot more to say on the subject, but my time is limited and I need a chance to organize my thoughts. I feel like I need to write some sort of manifesto or something. I don't know.

Selling out, redux

I am an antichristI am an anarchistDon't know what I want butI know how to get itI wanna destroy the passer by cos II wanna be Anarchy!OK, not quite Anarchy in the Blogging World, but I thought that would be an appropriate intro to how the first post sounded. It usually takes me talking to someone to really get my thoughts straight. Usually, that ends up being my wife. This is something that has bothered me before and I think I unfairly started a rant at Bubba's expense, although he was not the subject of my ire.Anyway, the whole blogging in the press box debate is an interesting subject to me. The first question you have to ask yourself is what role does the media fulfill? The media exists primarily (in theory) to inform and analyze - Who, what, where, when, why, and how? This is backed up by some legitimizing structure to give said media some sort of accountability and entertainment to keep people reading or watching.Bloggers can inform, analyze, and entertain. Sometimes all at the same time. Many strive for legitimacy, but really only the ones who have some level of accountability are taken seriously. Bloggers often hide behind pseudonyms, but until they are out in the open with who they are and open themselves up to scrutiny, they won't really get the respect they think they deserve."But who are you, Chris?" you might ask. Or maybe not - you probably don't care. That would be a good question if I was trying to put myself into that group. I don't hide who I am, but I don't put myself out in the spotlight either. In order to get to the level where you are gaining legitimacy, it takes a little exposure in more than one sense of the word.So the root cause of my annoyance is in that delineation - bloggers who wish to stay anonymous, but wish to be treated as full-on members of the media at large. I'm not singling anyone out here or accusing anyone of doing this specifically - let's take this as pure speculation. If you want to be legit, that comes with all of the baggage - good and bad.If someone wants to blog for a living and he, she, they, or it wants to latch on to some sugar daddy sponsor in order to pay the bills, more power to you. I sincerely wish you luck in your endeavors. Get your blog seen in as many places by as many people as possible. Get it published in a newspaper, even if it's only a link from the online version. Sell yourself. If you want to turn blogging into a media gig, it'll take a lot of effort - effort that I know I don't have the time or energy for.I'm sure many others are in the same boat. I have a full time job and two kids - this is pure hobby. I do it because I love hockey and want other people to love hockey. I can happily break down the Hurricanes recent dismantling in Tampa or the close loss my C-league team was handed two weeks back. For me, someone offering to give me press credentials would be interesting, maybe even cool, but not especially useful to either myself or the Hurricanes. I have better seats and I can cheer or not cheer when I want to. If I suddenly lost my job and decided to try sports writing as a career, maybe I'd change my mind. Maybe not.I still don't know if this made any sense to anyone. I'll have to read it over again in a day or two with fresh eyes. I hope I've made it a little more clear.

On a lighter note

Well, the Thrash came into town and beat the Canes about the head and shoulders tonight. The funny thing to me was that our best period was the one in which Atlanta scored its opposed goals. I mean, the Canes controlled play in the first, but two plays - a great individual effort by Marian Hossa on the first goal and a defensive gaffe (that's a great word) combined with Mike Commodore not covering the two-on-one well for the second. That was the game in a nutshell. The second and third were quite miserable and the guys seemed lost, despite Cam nominally keeping the team in the game. Ward was our best player tonight and there was nothing he could have done about either goal scored on him.A few more thoughts on the game:Chad "He Hate Me" LaRose seemed to draw just about every Atlanta penalty. It was bizarre. It's like the entire city of Atlanta has a deep wish to see Chad beaten and bloodied. My inside voice took over once during the third period on an Atlanta three-on-two break. I believe what I said was "David Frickin' Tanabe! Cover the trailer, damn it!" He was staring at the guy with the puck and not the Atlanta player crashing the net. Luckily it was broken up anyway. The high sticking non-call on Pascal Dupuis - When Brindy took the stick up high, half the crowd was irate. I didn't have the benefit of instant replay, but my initial impression was that it probably shouldn't have been a penalty. It looked to me that Brindy took Dupuis' feet right out from under him and, when he was in mid-air from this, he caught Brindy up high. It could have been both of them called for penalties, so it was just as well that it ended up being neither. Granted I could see a replay later and change my opinion, but like the ref, that was my impression on the spot. The passing was weak and lazy tonight. After the first period, the Canes made several half-assed, disinterested passes that were easily intercepted by the Thrashers. It was very disappointing.Brat Watson made his first appearance at the RBC since "Divegate". I'm actually mad at myself for even typing that. Anyway, the crowd didn't particularly let him feel their wrath. The crowd energy was a bit underwhelming tonight, not that the Canes did much to help it.

I'm not breaking my self-imposed exile, but I did want to quickly mention something:On March 1st, the Canes take on Tampa here in Raleigh. After the game, two "local" adult rec league teams will play for an hour - one from Raleigh, one from Wilmington. The Canes are calling this promotion the "Rink of Dreams". Anyway, the Raleigh team - the Ice Hawks - is the team I play for. So any of you who are at that game can see and ridicule us for free. It'll be fun.

My wife has been in Minneapolis this week for a library conference and decided, while she was there, to go to the Minnesota-Vancouver game tonight. I exchanged text messages with her the entire game and she had a blast - beautiful arena, packed house, etc. Definitely a good time. She sent pictures, so I thought I would share. Keep in mind, these were taken with her cell phone, so the quality is not so great. She did miss a 7-1 drubbing of the Thrashers tonight, but I definitely think she got the better deal. I'm very jealous.
