This season however he has made his mark on this team with his defense. The Mavs defense is a full 8.6 points better with Kidd on the floor, and in the West that is no easy task. Tonight should be one of the easier match ups for Kidd on both ends of the floor. Look for a possible triple/double from J Kidd tonight. vs. Beno Udrih: Udrih is being asked to carry more of the scoring load for the Kings with K Mart being side lined. Beno is more of a jump shooter than penetrator; he comes in averaging 13 ppg, shooting 51% from the field and 43% from 3. He has good ball skills as he carries a 2:1 assists to turnover ratio; he has shown the ability to get to the basket, but his shot gets blocked at a 17% clip, without K Mart this percentage probably increases. Edge: Mavericks Shooting Guard Rodrigue Beaubois: Continues to help get the Mavs off to a quick start in the 1st and 3rd quarters, and the feel of the team just seems to be more energized with him on the floor. His speed and quickness will be great assets for him tonight going against a much bigger defender. This may be the game that Beaubois gets increased time on the floor. Look for the Mavs to work the Kidd/Beaubois/Nowitzki 3 man game a lot tonight. vs. Tyreke Evans: The Kings #1 draft pick from Memphis has got his NBA career off to a good start. Evans comes in averaging 17.1ppg. The Kings will run a lot of screens and backside picks to get him the ball while moving to the basket. Evans is a good finisher and with his length (6'6") at the 2 spot, could cause the Mavs defense problems. While Evans does not shoot the 3 ball well (26%) he has a decent 15-18 ft. jumper, but it is his finishing ability that Kings are in love with. Edge: Even Forward Quinton Ross: Defense, Defense, Defense. I mean what else is there to say about The Q? Do not be surprised however if Kris Humphries does not get the nod due to the extreme height disadvantage the Mavs will be in. vs. Donte Greene: It appears as though the Kings coaching staff is becoming more, and more confident in Donte. Against Chicago on Tuesday Donte played his most minutes of the year and oh by the way led the team in scoring too. Donte will do most of his work inside the paint and his height could cause the Mavs problems. Local sports talk host on 1310 The Ticket, Bob Sturm, has been reiterating this lately and I am completely on board: Dirk is amazing and Mavs fans who get to watch him night in and night out should be PRIVILEGED to cheer for him. He is a 1st ballot Hall of Famer and one of the best and unique players this league has ever seen. I am proud to be a fan of Dirk Nowitzki, and if any national media member or moron fan of another team doesn't realize Dirk's greatness, then they do not know basketball. What is all of this talk about the Mavs window closing? Doesn't that go hand in hand with Dirk's window? Call me crazy, but I don't see Dirk slowing down anytime soon. Maybe I should be happy we went to the JET Cropduster at the end of regulation. That bonehead move allowed all of us to witness more of Dirk's greatness. But what were the Mavs doing? He was 3-15 before that "shot." Wouldn't we rather Dirk take a heavily contested shot than just about anyone else on our team take a wide open shot? Run the game-ending plays for Dirk! We all keep talking in the game threads about a Mavs player to bag on. We went through Barea, Gooden, Tim Thomas, but I think we settled on Jason Terry. We know he can take over a game offensively. We aren't stupid. But in crunch time, I don't trust him to play defense, I don't trust him to make free throws, and I'd rather have Dirk taking the big shots. I say all of this knowing that the Cropduster will stick it to me soon and be the JET very soon (I hope!). Were the two biggest plays Dirk made all night his defensive stops against Duncan in overtime? Nowitzki played tough vs. Duncan (unlike Humphries at the end of regulation) and stopped him twice in the extra session. Yes, the offensive plays Dirk made were more exhilarating, but when will Dirk get any credit for his defense?Dirk could do no wrong tonight. Since Devean George is gone, everyone is looking for a new punching bag as I already mentioned. I have suggested Jason Terry, though many of you have jumped on Drew Gooden. Well, he is doing his best to make you continue to look. Three double-doubles in a row for the former bunnytailer. I love the way he is playing right now. I saw him take one shot I didn't like tonight. Every other time he had the ball he attacked the basket. When Damp comes back, the Dallas Mavericks actually have some depth at the 5! Mavs just need to remember to make sure and turn off the rim mics when he brings his foul mouth nearby. Tim Thomas played! OK, maybe I shouldn't be that excited. All I can remember from him is a missed dunk. What was Popovich doing in the 4th quarter leaving Malik Hairston in the game for so long? Did he forget that the Spurs signed Richard Jefferson in the off-season? That is the only explanation I can think of. Dirk just said "pissed" on the post game. He wasn't happy with himself at halftime. Can you say pissed on TV? Roddy Beaubois was a force early again, and we didnt see him late... again. Carlisle obviously still trusts Barea more in the 4th, and I cant argue with the results tonight. JJ finished the game with a +/- of +14, only behind the +15 of Kris Humphries.I'm still angry I wasn't able to win that Roddy jersey on TXA 21 tonight! Browse more photos » Why hello again, money ballers, Its time, its time, its Vader time to ball.  I'm once again going to take you through the crazyness that is the Mav's Mavs season thus far, in my own crazy, monkey brain.  Since we last talked It's been a little over a week since we last talked, and oh so much has happened.  I watched as my roommate (a loyal Spurs fan) did the happy dance when the depleted spurs defeated the Mavs, and the Roddy B hype machine start rolling.   ohh and Dirk is still the UberMan.  Follow me to freedom after the jump. So the Mavs are now 8-3, 5-1 since we last talked, with wins against Toronto, Houston, @Minnesota, @Detroit, and @Milwaukee(OT), and the lone loss was @San Antonio.  Three of those wins have been via blowouts (Tor, Hou, @Minn), and i'll take a 8-3 start without a doubt.  Howard came back, then left again, hope this isn't the start of trend.  Fun With Box Scores.  Toronto 129-101 Win Always going to be a good game when you can keep every player on the other team in the minus, although it was a bit disheartening that the post players for Toronto (Bosh26, Bargnani22, Johnson4, O'Bryant4) combined for 56pts Two guys, James Singleton and J.J. Barea, showed some good stuff this game.  JJ played 24 min, and recorded 12 assists and a great +18, and Singleton played 18 min, had 10pts, and was also +18.    Houston 121-103Win Big news with this game was the "comeback.'"  Its a nice thing to know that this Mavs team, much like the ones of years past, can and will at times look like the best offensive team in the association.  This game saw the Mavs shoot 55% from the field, and 58% from 3.  Dirk was dope, 23pts, 6-15 shooting, 10-10 from the line, a rousing +26. Of course it helps when one of their best "glue guys," Shane Battier has a stat line like this: 3pts, 1-8fg(1-6three), 3ast, 1stl, -24.  Way to go buddy. @San Antonio You know what this game was like?  You know when your out drinking, you find some girl who may be a little drunk, not like rape wasted, but drunk enough to fall for your game, you take her home, get her in your bed and reenact that scene from Devils Advocate that is going on behind Al Pachino on the moving wall near the end of movie.  Good times right?  Now in the morning you get said girls number.  You call her in the next few days, set up a nice date, thinking almost nothing more than how that night be just like the other night.  During the dinner you order some drinks, have some decent conversation, all the while not really giving your all, because come on, you've already seen this girl give you the angry dolphin.  You then take her back to her place, walk her up to the door, thinking you'll just get to waltz right in and do the nasty, only to have her stop at the door, give you a quick kiss and say the doomed words "good night."  In a heated panic, you try and lay something smooth on her to convince her the date shouldn't end there, but it's too late, she is already inside and in her PJ's before you can even attempt a comeback. All night long you were thinking, "this is great, she has nothing to hide or tease me with because I've already got her done, this will be a breeze," when in fact, she is still a girl, and just because she let you hit it once, doesn't mean you don't have to put in the work to hit it again.  That's what I feel happened to the Mavs during this Spurs game.  They saw "ohh we beat an almost full strength Spurs team in the playoffs last year, (I know Manu was out, but his nose is big), now Timmy and Parker are out?  Church."  To the disappointment of all Mavs fans, the Spurs are still full of NBA talent even without Duncan and Parker, and you have to put in work to have sex with them beat them. Best +/- of the night for the Mavs?  Dirk and Quinton Ross.  Ross in 19 min had 3pts, 3 reb, and a +4.  Lets hope he plays some tonight.  @Minnesota 89-77win Once again the Mavs won with D.  I think i've said that more this year already than I did all of last.  They held Minn to 32% shooting, and the only player on the Timberwolves that I liked was rookie Jonny Flynn, but i'm biased.  Shawn Marion had the kind of night that all us Mavs fans would love to see more of.  30 min 15pts 4ast 3reb +19.  Only starter to go negative, the Hype man, Roddy B.  15min, 1ast 3TO's 9pts -6. @Detroit 95-90 Win Not going to say we stole this one, but when a team shoots better than you, and out rebounds you, and a guy named Rodney Stuckey hangs 28 on you, you're probably going to lose.  Not the case here, in most part to holding the Pistons best player, Ben Gordon, to 1-16 and only 5pts in 41min.  To make up for (and maybe start) the Hype Machine, Roddy B (we need a good nickname for the kid, I'm thinking BeuBOSS, but i'm just a caveman) gave us a hell of a game, 19min, 6-6 from the floor, 4ast, 14pts, +13.  Nice line kid.  @Milwaukee 115-113 OT We shot better (51% to 44%) out rebounded (48 to 33), yet it still took the Dirk to hit a game winner in overtime.  Would you believe that was the first loss the Bucks had on their own floor?  Brandon Jennings is legit, the Rookie had 25pts, 7reb, 8ast.  and only 2 turn overs.  Surprisingly the only starter for the Bucs to go positive though was Luc Mbah a Moute (42 min, 13pts, 6rebs +7).  Outside of the 4th quarter against Utah, this may have been Dirks best game, going 43min, 12-25 for 32 points, 11reb, 3ast, 2stl, and a very salty +13.    New Mav, hows he doing so far - Shawn Marion The Matrix was the big pickup in the off season, and we all expect some big things from him this year.  Its true that his athleticism can't really be measured in box scores, but in how he helps the team get W's.  But, here is his line so far this season in a per game look. 32min 49%FG, 0-2 on three's, 15-19 free throw (that 1.4/1.7 per game), 1.8 steals, .08blocks, 6.5 rebounds (2.7 offensive), 1.5 assists, 12.6 points.  My take.  I've really enjoyed watching him just be in the game so far this season.  He really just adds a bit of hustle and explosion to this offense that we really haven't seen in quite some time.  Would i like him do a bit more?  Yes.  0-2 on three's really surprises me.  I remember him just jacking up that girly shooting motion much much more when he was in Phoneix, but that was a different system I know.  I would also like to see him get to the line more than less than twice a game, but all in all, with the ol' eyeball test, I like it.   Statie McStatstat So the Mavs have lost 3 times so far, 2 of them have been the latter half of back to backs.  So far the Mavs have had 4 back to back set of games, LAL(win 94-80)LAC(win 93-84), Utah(Win96-85)@NOLA(Loss 107-114)Houston(win121-103)@SanAnton(L 89-92), @Det(win 95-90)@Milwaukee(W115-113). So the two losses that we have had (after the debacle of opening night), came after games where we had to really pour it on in the second half to win, Utah and Houston, and both also were on the road.  Something to think about.    Crazy ass trade thoughts Today in CATT we take a look at a guy who is probably already on the trading block as we speak.  Elton Brand.  Stats and such 30 years, 6-9 PF Duke, 653Total Games 47 last 3. ruptured left Achilles tendon in 07, all year, part of next 14.8mill 4years, 27min 9.8pts 5.3reb .6blk Last year, 29games 13.8ppg 8.8reb 6FTA 2blks Why they would want to trade him.  Well, he's older, busted, and not doing what they thought he could do so far this year, and with him tying up 14.8 mill over the next 4 years, they may be thinking of selling while they still can.  Why we would want him.  He has a chance to be the 20-10 low post guy that we haven't ever had here in Dallas.  His skill set, if he can recover from his foot explosion, is much better than what we are getting from Damp, even on a good night.  Why we wouldn't want him.  Until he proves otherwise, he's old a busted, like Fran Dresser, yea you were once hot so put up with your laugh, now you make me want to kick you in the taco.  And to boot, he has 4 more years left on his contract.  If he didn't bounce back, he would become the next Damp.  Old and Busted.  Best trade for both teams.  Brand for Damp (12mill) and S. I didn't think I'd be as sad as I am knowing that Reunion is gone.  I wasn't bothered by Arlington Stadium or what will happen to Texas Stadium, but something about Reunion is different.   This was the place where my love of basketball began and my fascination with the Dallas Mavericks was kindled. My Top 10 Mavericks Memories from Reunion Arena (I say memories because they're not all specific events)...in no particular order 1) Kevin McCarthy's PA ways.  I wasn't a fan of Humble Billy.  I don't think PA guys need to be over the top (or DJ's in the case of Miami).   McCarthy was understated and classy.  I always liked that. 2) Barely any luxury suites.  It never really dawned on me when I would go there, after all, I was a kid.  However, looking back, this made it much more "college-like" in the fan intensity...I'm not sure that makes sense, but I think you guys know what I'm talking about. 3)  The Triple J era.  Remember 1994?   Tonya Harding busted what's her name in the knee and made a sex tape about it (check my facts).   The Menendez brothers killed their parents with OJ's bloody Bruno Magli shoes.  I was captivated by the X-Men cartoon and the three core players on the Mavericks: Jason Kidd v 1.0, Jim Jackson and Jamal Mashburn.  Remember? The year before kid was the 13 win year and then this rookie showed up and was a triple double machine.  Then Jim Jackson had sex with Toni Braxton and effed the whole thing up.  Damn you, Toni Braxton.  4) The sheer volume level.  What I remember about Reunion is that it didn't really need all the lights, sound, smoke and lasers to make it home field.  The Rowdies (where I credit "Rowdy, Proud, and Loud") made that place damn near uncomfortable to play for visitors.  In that 1988 WCF against the Lakers, CBS apparently measured the game 6 volume at 121 decibels. 5) Now that I mention it, the entire 1988 season.   Roy Tarpley was THE 6th man.  Aguirre and Donaldson made the All-Star team.  All together just kick ass before running into Show Time. Rest after the jump... 6) The collapse in 1989 and 1990.  I didn't say they were all good memories.  The Aguirre for Dantley move.  The Schrempf for Herb Williams move.  James Donaldson loses his knee. Tarpley discovers alcohol and drugs. Perkins goes to the Lakers.    7) Fat Lever.  Yes, he was a Nugget for most of his career.  Yes, he came to the Mavericks after the 1990 debacle.  Yes, he only played 35 games in 3 season.  But damn it, his nickname was "Fat" and I was a kid who thought that was hilarious. 8) A young Michael Finley stokes hope again with Nellie on the bench.  After the Triple J thing stopped working, and the NBA went all lock out on us.  Finley went off and would be the foundation of the team.   Nellie stepped out of the GM role and on to the bench for what would become the Mavs re-birth into today's greatness. 9) The German Invasion...part 3.  Apparently I forgot that WWII humor doesn't sit well with the internet.  So, I'll just say this. Dirk came into the locker room of Reunion a young schnitzel.  Now's he's the big sausage.  (That wasn't funny.  I'm sorry.)   Don't forget, he wasn't the first big German to play for the Mavs, he was third after Schrempf and Blab. 10) Cubes takes over, and the Mavs move on a good note.   The brand spanking new AAC was built, and the Mavs had a young nucleus and a flashy new owner. Well tonight begins the next test for Kidd and the Mavs. The last time in San Antonio Kidd was given the luxury of not having to defend Parker, but Parker is healthy again and Kidd better be ready. vs. Tony Parker: Tony made his return to the Spurs line up against Oklahoma City this past Saturday night, after being out with a sprained ankle. Parker looked good in his return with 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. Since then the Spurs have been sitting waiting on tonight's match up. Edge: Spurs (a fresh Parker against Kidd after a long road trip, this is not how I wanted the home stand to start) Shooting Guard Rodrigue Beaubois: Roddy B had a stellar road trip, and continues to open eyes around the NBA. Roddy could have really helped the Mavs in there last meeting against the Spurs, but someone decided not to play him, uh hmm... vs. Keith Bogans: The last time Bogans faced the Mavs he saw a lot of JJ Barea, and Bogans had a field day on both ends of the court. He only played 17 minutes in OKC but would be prepared to see quite a bit of him tonight. Edge: Mavericks Forward Shawn Marion: Shawn is listed as day to day after suffering a sprained ankle in the first quarter of the game in Milwaukee on Monday night. I think he will play but I am not sure how effective he will be. We will likely see quite a bit of Kris Humphries and the Q vs. Richard Jefferson: Richard alone beat the Mavericks in the last meeting, but Jefferson was non existent in OKC on Saturday night. Apparently the Spurs and Jefferson are having a hard time getting on the same page when he is in the line up with Duncan and Parker. Jefferson played 35 minutes scoring 4 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists. The Spurs will more than likely try to get Jefferson going quickly against an ailing Shawn Marion. Edge: Mavericks Center Drew Gooden: I never saw this coming, but Gooden has played really well as of late and he will be needed tonight. In his last game against the Bucks Drew went off for 22 points and 14 rebounds. Another performance tonight any where near his last would go a long way in bringing a victory to the home team. vs. DeJuan Blair: Who knows how long he can hold up physically, but so far he has been excellent for the Spurs. The Spurs continue to limit his minutes to around 18 but he makes the most of his minutes (7 ppg, 7 rpg) I would highly suggest for Gooden to wear a little extra padding tonight. But he’s been on a few already, and figures to make a few more because of a play the Mavericks don’t have to call or make up a fancy name.The lob pass from point guard Jason Kidd to Beaubois has become a useful tool for the Mavericks. They have run it on the first play of at least two games that Beaubois has started.Against Milwaukee on Monday, they ran it after a timeout late in the second quarter and it worked perfectly to trigger an 11-2 Mavericks surge to finish the half with a 12-point lead.Opponents haven’t figured it out yet, and there’s a reason. They don’t know when it’s coming because there are no hand signals or voice commands from coach Rick Carlisle or Kidd."We call it after a timeout or at the start of a quarter," Beaubois said. "We don’t have to say anything."That would seem to be a dead giveaway, but even if defenders know it’s coming, it’s hard to stop because of Dirk Nowitzki. He’s the pick-setter at the top of the key after Beaubois gives the ball to Kidd and starts his circuitous route to the far side of the basket, where he takes off after Kidd has released the lob pass.Defenses do not leave Nowitzki when he sets a pick. That frees Beaubois for a clear run at the weak side of the basket."All you have to do is have somebody who can throw a decent pass," Kidd said.He’s been known to do that a time or 10,000 in his career. Kidd and Richard Jefferson used to make a living off the lob passes when they were at New Jersey."It’s a great weapon if you’ve got a guy who can go up and get it like Roddy can," Kidd said."It’s definitely good for Roddy that we have J-Kidd," Nowitzki said. "He makes the game easy for a lot of guys around him."It helps that the lob play is constantly getting tweaked and refined. The angles may change a bit from game to game. But until opponents figure out a way to stop it, the Mavericks will keep breaking it out when they feel the time is right.Eyeing the SpursYou know it was a good road trip when you have too many high-level contributors to properly acknowledge them all.All 10 players in the main rotation had important roles during one or more of the three consecutive wins that capped the trip after a 92-83 loss in San Antonio.But when they were done with the journey, the Mavericks had only one thing on their mind."The big thing I like is we have the San Antonio game and we get a chance to see them again quick instead of waiting until January or something like that," said Drew Gooden, who averaged 16.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in the last two games of the trip that Erick Dampier missed with an undisclosed illness. "A sign of a good team is when a loss like that hurts. We’re still talking about it.
