'A total collapse'

That was how Sixers coach Tony DiLeo put the team's effort in Game 6 when they were dominated by the Dwight Howard-less Magic 114-89, ending the Sixers' season for the second year in a row in Game 6 of the first round. Both times _ Thursday and last year against the Pistons _ the Sixers were blown out in the elimination game. This time, however, it was a total disgrace. The Magic were playing without two starters in Dwight Howard and Courtney Lee. Howard was suspended for his elbow on Dalembert, while Lee was out with a fractured sinus, also because of an elbow from Howard.Howard spent the game in his hotel room twittering away. The Sixers, meanwhile, played like they were twittering too, because they didn't show up.Marcin Gortat dominated the Sixers inside. Rafer Alston and J.J. Redick buried them from the outside and Rashard Lewis hit everywhere in between for a game-high 29 points. The Sixers got nothing. They fell behind by 15 in the first quarter, 22 in the third quarter and well, it was pretty much over.So now they head into an uncertain offseason. Will Tony DiLeo be back as coach? Will Andre Miller, an unrestricted free agent, be back as the point guard? Can the Sixers find someone _ anyone _ to take Samuel Dalembert off their hands after another dreadful performance (this time he had no excuse because there was no Howard to dominate him)? It's obvious that this team can't stay together the way it is. Elton Brand needs to be a force in the middle, and of course, healthy. They need a shooter in the worst way. And if Miller leaves, they'll need a point guard. Last year, the Pistons exposed the Sixers' lack of a low-post presence. This year, the Magic exposed pretty much everything, including a surprising lack of fight when it mattered most. This can't be acceptable anymore. What are your thoughts on changes that need to be made? Remember, the Sixers are over the salary cap, so they can't sign an unrestricted free agent like Ben Gordon, although they can do a sign-and-trade for him.I'll have more tomorrow from breakup day.

No Miller, Theo at breakup day

The Sixers departed for the season with a final team meeting. Andre Miller and Theo Ratliff didn't show up. Both are unrestricted free agents. Ratliff was critical after Game 6 last night, saying there was little direction and accountability from the coaching staff.Miller, by not showing up, probably gave his opinion of whether he wants to return. That, of course, doesn't seem likely now.So what do you see as the Sixers' biggest needs?Do they keep Tony DiLeo? Do they try to trade Samuel Dalembert (and if so, who would take him?)? Do they do something dramatic and trade either Andre Iguodala/Thaddeus Young for a much-needed shooter? And if Miller isn't coming back, who's the point guard? So many questions after another mediocre season. Let's hear your thoughts.

Who's the coach?

By now, you've heard and read about the somewhat less than ringing endorsement for 76ers coach Tony DiLeo by the players after their embarrassing Game 6 loss to Orlando.DiLeo is currently taking some time off to decide upon returning as coach or going back to the front office. But that decision might already be made for him. These are things that Sixers president and GM Ed Stefanski must consider before deciding upon his coach:1) Is DiLeo the guy to lead the Sixers to the proverbial next level? If you base it on the fact that Stefanski and DiLeo are close, and that they share the same philosophy, then the answer would seem to be yes. The Sixers finished the regular season 32-27 after DiLeo took over for Maurice Cheeks. But depending on your point of view, he did that without Elton Brand. Cheeks couldn't make it work with Brand. No one knows if DiLeo can because he never got the chance.2) The players didn't exactly lobby for him. Theo Ratliff said the coaching staff held no accountability toward the younger players. Andre Iguodala hinted that a coach who's harder on players might be better suited to run the team. 3) Who's out there? If Stefanski were to look for a hard-nosed coach, there are some candidates out there like Avery Johnson, Doug Collins and Jeff Van Gundy. Then you would have to revert to the first point _ hiring a new coach like that would involve a multi-year commitment and it would also possibly mean a change in philosophy. Remember, Stefanski and DiLeo are on the same page. That might not be the case with a new coach.4) The "wow" factor. It's safe to say that DiLeo doesn't have it. He's a nice guy, but he's not someone like Larry Bowa when he managed the Phillies to inspire the masses, so to speak. Then again, does Collins, Johnson, Van Gundy, or even Eddie Jordan? 5) Money talks. The Sixers still owe Cheeks his salary for next season. DiLeo will get paid whether he's coaching or in the front office. If he's in the front office, and another coach is hired, the Sixers would have to commit probably around $10 million over 4 years, at least, on top of $2 million to Cheeks and DiLeo's salary. 6) Stefanski's "guy." Let's put it this way, since Stefanski got the job in Dec. 2007, he has not had a chance to hire his own coach. He inherited Cheeks, and Cheeks managed to get the Sixers into the playoffs so he had to stick with him. Then, when Stefanski finally fired Cheeks, it was in the middle of the season, so he had to hire someone on an interim basis, and hence it was DiLeo. Stefanski finally has that chance to hire his "guy" if he in fact has one. We'll find out. Those are some of the factors that Stefanski has to deal with. What will he do? What should he do?Let's hear your thoughts.

BREAKING NEWS: DiLeo not coming back

Tony DiLeo withdrew his name from consideration to remain the 76ers coach, Sixers president and general manager Ed Stefanski said today. The two met earlier this afternoon to discuss the coaching job. At that point, DiLeo told Stefanski that he didn?t want to come back. The Sixers went 32-27 under DiLeo, who replaced Maurice Cheeks on Dec. 13. They reached the playoffs, but lost in the first round to the Orlando Magic in six games. After Game 6, when the Sixers lost 114-89, some players were lukewarm toward the idea of DiLeo returning.DiLeo decided to take some time off before making a decision one way or the other."I want to thank Tony for the commendable job he did this season under some unique and difficult circumstances, including leading us to the playoffs," Stefanski said.DiLeo will return to his previous role of Senior Vice President and Assistant General Manager, and the Sixers will begin a search for a new coach. Some possibilities include Avery Johnson, Eddie Jordan, Doug Collins, or Jeff Van Gundy.Check tomorrow's News Journal or delawareonline.com, for more.

Who's the next coach?

Now that Tony DiLeo is out, who will the Sixers hire to replace him? Before I get to that, however, I wanted to give one final word on DiLeo's situation. It was obvious that Sixers GM Ed Stefanski had no intention of retaining DiLeo as coach. When asked if the job was DiLeo's if he had said he wanted to return, Stefanski said "that's speculation." Of course it's speculation. But he could have ended that speculation because he was the only one who knew. That he said nothing spoke volumes. And it seemed from DiLeo's press conference that he wanted to keep coaching. It's nice that he wants to spend more time with his family and watch his kids play basketball. But how often do you get moved up to the front office when you want to work less?Besides, I found it telling that Stefanski listed the qualities in a new coach _ communication, accountability _ that DiLeo was criticized for lacking.Let's just say the family reason was both Stefanski's and DiLeo's way of saving face. If that's truly the case, then it's a shame that Game 6 seemed to change everything. It must have become clear to Stefanski after Theo Ratliff ripped DiLeo and Andre Iguodala spoke of "inner turmoil" that DiLeo couldn't come back as coach.Anyway, on to the possible replacements:1) Eddie Jordan. Stefanski worked with Jordan when he was the GM in New Jersey and Jordan was Byron Scott's top assistant. The word around NJ was that Jordan, and not Scott, was the brains behind the operation while the Nets reached the Finals twice. But the Sixers better act fast because Sacramento is making a strong push for him.2) Avery Johnson. He did a good job in Dallas, and he is more of a hard-nosed coach that Iguodala seemed to want. Is he too hard-nosed, however? He was for the Mavericks.3) Doug Collins. He is a veteran coach with three different teams, but other than the Michael Jordan-lead Bulls in the mid-1980s, never had much success in his other stops in Detroit and Washington.4) Jeff Van Gundy. He's another good X's and O's guy who can get tough with players.5) Celtics assistant Tom Thibodeau. He's considered a defensive whiz. And as we all know with the Sixers, they could use someone like that.6) Jay Wright. He would have to be crazy to take this job. He's got a cushy job at Villanova. Unless the Sixers triple his salary and pay for his entire wardrobe, he should stay right where he is.

Jordan gets 1st interview

It looks like Eddie Jordan will get the first shot at the Sixers' vacancy. It makes sense that he would be the first choice. I've always felt that if Ed Stefanski had a proverbial "guy" that Jordan might be it.They worked together for 4 years in New Jersey, and it was widely acknowledged that Jordan, as the top assistant, was the brains behind the Nets' success in 2002 and 2003 when Byron Scott led the Nets to the NBA Finals. After the 2002-03 season, Jordan got the job with the Wizards. They won 25 games that year. The next year they improved by 20 games and made the playoffs for four straight seasons until it all fell apart this season. Jordan was fired after Washington started 1-10. The Sixers job opened Monday when Tony DiLeo told Stefanski that he wanted his old job back as assistant VP (take that however you'd like).Keep in mind that since Stefanski got the job in Dec. 2007, replacing Billy King, he has never had the chance to hire his own coach. Mo Cheeks was still coaching the team. And while it seemed like Cheeks was a goner then, he rallied the Sixers and they made the playoffs, so Stefanski had to give him a 1-year extension. He gave him another 1-year extension last summer so he wouldn't be a lame duck coach. But he fired Cheeks in December. While Jordan was available then (he was fired a few weeks earlier), he was still getting paid by the Wizards, so Stefanski had to turn inward to DiLeo. So if in fact Jordan is the guy, now is the time for Stefanski to act.And he needs to act fast because Jordan is also being pursued by the Sacramento Kings, a team he coached in 1997 and 1998. The Sixers' situation, however, seems more appealing based on the fact that they are in better position to win, and also Jordan is from the Mid-Atlantic. We'll see.If Jordan is truly "the guy" then he'll be hired next week. Count on it.

While the 76ers continue with their clandestine coaching search _ Boston Celtics assistant Tom Thibodeau and Dallas Mavericks assistant Dwayne Casey are expected to interview in the coming days _ let's look ahead to some possible changes the Sixers can make this summer. We all can agree that the Sixers need to move on without Samuel Dalembert, right? But he has a hefty contract that makes him difficult to move, right? Well, it so happens that the Houston Rockets could use a backup center since Yao Ming is injury-prone and Dikembe Mutombo had to retire. They would love to get a center with starting experience, who would be better than the typical backup. And it also so happens that they would love to move on without Tracy McGrady. While it's true that McGrady is coming off knee surgery, he does have an expiring contract next season worth $23M. The Sixers would probably have to add a second player, such as Lou Williams or Willie Green to get the salaries to match. Even if McGrady doesn't play next year, the Sixers could let him walk and be well under the salary cap for 2010. No, they won't have a prayer to get LeBron James. But what about Chris Bosh or someone like that? And if McGrady is healthy enough to play, then you have a versatile shooting guard to go along with Andre Iguodala, Thaddeus Young and Elton Brand. That's not bad, either. It's a trade that would make sense for both sides, and there aren't too many of those in the NBA involving high-salaried players.

The Wright call

It turns out that Villanova coach Jay Wright interviewed for the Sixers job. It also turns out that he wasn't interested. He made the right call, so to speak.Wright is practically the King of Villanova. He has a good team, a solid recruiting base and he's beloved by the Nova faithful. That would not be the case with the Sixers, a mediocre team that needs upgrades in order to not remain mediocre. Sure, the Sixers would have offered him a lot of money, perhaps three times as much as what he makes at Nova. But is it worth it? The NBA season is a grind. There are the 82 games in the regular season plus 2 months of playoffs if you have a championship caliber team. There is very little down time. Sure, you don't have to recruit preteens like you do in college, but you also don't have to deal with prima donna players who have way more power than the coach. That is not the case in college, where the coach rules.Wright is no dummy. He knows how Rick Pitino, John Calipari, Tim Floyd, Lon Kruger, Mike Montgomery and many others tried the NBA and failed miserably. That leaves 5 candidates. A source close to the situation said that Chris Ford also interviewed, joining Eddie Jordan, Dwane Casey, Tom Thibodeau and Kurt Rambis. The source added that Jeff Van Gundy, Doug Collins and Avery Johnson also might get a look. That would indicate that there is no clear front-runner at this point. It's not known if Wright would have been the choice. But it's better to be the King at Villanova than a Pawn for the 76ers.

Maynor may be the one

I was covering the LPGA Championship last weekend, so I didn't get to the Sixers' two workouts for prospective draftees. One of those invited to Sunday's workout was a player Delaware basketball fans have gotten to know all too well in recent years: Virginia Commonwealth's Eric Maynor.Maynor is a 6-3, 165-pound point guard who can score. He averaged 22.6 points per game last season and was the Colonial Athletic Association player of the year for two straight years. But he's kind of sinewy, and people say he reminds them of Lou Williams. But the Sixers already have a Lou Williams. So what does that accomplish? Well, Lou hasn't proven himself as a point guard, and Maynor is definitely more accomplished in that area.If the Sixers do draft Maynor, that would lead me to believe that they might look into trading Williams. And there would be interest in him, just because he's still 22 years old, and he can get to the basket, and (don't laugh) his salary isn't that outrageous, with 4 years and about $20 million. The draft is just 10 days away.* * * *One final thought on the Lakers' championship. They were obviously the best team, and Kobe Bryant was obviously the best player. He won a championship without Shaquille O'Neal. And he came through when the Lakers needed him most. The Magic, however, basically threw away 2 games _ the one where Courtney Lee missed an alley-oop at the end of regulation and the one where Dwight Howard missed 2 free throws with 11 seconds left in Game 4.But the Lakers frustrated Hedo Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis for most of the series with their length (Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom and Trevor Ariza) just like the Sixers did with Andre Iguodala and Thaddeus Young. The difference was the Lakers had a lot more depth than the Sixers. That's why they're the champs, and the Sixers are not.

Rumors are flying...

It is being reported today that Houston is shopping Tracy McGrady and the Atlanta Hawks might be shopping Josh Smith. You remember Josh Smith, the high-flying 23-year-old forward whom the Sixers brought in last summer and wined and dined during his free agency period. The Sixers stopped pursuing him when Elton Brand became an unrestricted free agent. Smith was a restricted free agent, which meant that Altanta could match any offer for him, and they did when the Grizzlies made an offer. The Sixers knew that would happen, which is why they turned their attention to Brand.According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Hawks denied that Smith is available. But if he in fact was, this could be a golden opportunity for the Sixers to trade for him. The price could be steep, however. Smith is 23 years old. I'm thinking maybe Thaddeus Young and another player to make the salaries match (Samuel Dalembert?).As for the McGrady rumor, this, too, could work for the Sixers. McGrady is going into the final season of his contract worth $23M. Yes, he's coming off knee surgery and he's expected to miss the first 20-30 games of the season, according to Draftexpress.com. But if he does make it back, he could help a team get ready for the playoffs. If he doesn't make it back, a team gets his salary off the books next summer to go after a premier free agent not named LeBron James. The price to get McGrady wouldn't be as steep as getting Smith. Dalembert would definitely have to be one of the players, just to get the salaries somewhat close. The Sixers would have to throw in another player, perhaps Willie Green and maybe a future 2nd-round pick. The Sixers' recent trade for Jason Kapono might affect going after McGrady. But if the Sixers are looking for salary cap relief in 2010, it's not that big a gamble to take. So, if you're Ed Stefanski, do any of these trade possibilities appeal to you, and if so, which one? * * * * Backup guard Royal Ivey declined his player option for next season, worth $1M, and will become a free agent. On the surface, that's not a big deal. But it could be because the Sixers are now thin at guard, point guard especially, with Ivey and Andre Miller unrestricted free agents. That leaves the Sixers with just Lou Williams and Green at the guard positions, although Andre Iguodala and Kapono can play shooting guard. That means, as of right now, Lou Williams is the only point guard on the roster. Scary, isn't it? That would seem to indicate that the Sixers will probably draft a PG. But if Miller doesn't come back, they will also probably trade for one (Rafer Alston, anyone?).

The 76ers snapped a 12-game losing streak with a 98-83 win at Boston on Friday - the day their trade of superstar Allen Iverson to Denver became official - and followed with a 98-77 rout of New York a day later.

Well the 2 game winning streak is over and the Warriors jumped on the Sixers early and never turned back. Baron Davis had a stellar night with 21 points and 16 assists. The rookie Rodney Carney played well for the Sixers scoring 26 points and grabbing 8 boards. Former Sixer Matt Barnes has been playing well lately for the Warriors. He had 25 points on 8-9 shooting, 7 which were 3 pointers and added 8 boards. The perimeter defense must get better in order for the Sixers to stay in games.

The Sixers won't get much rest since they have back-to-back games in which they play the Sacramento Kings tonight at Sacramento. The Sixers will hope to rebound off the bad lost.

Bad shooting and not enough production from the guys who should be supplying the offense caused the Sixers to get blowed out at Sacramento. Ron Artest was all over the floor and really disrupted what the Sixers wanted to do. Andre Miller had his worst shooting night missing 8 of his first 10 shots. He did finish with 14 points and 5 assists. Iguodala has started to cool down and has reverted back to taken alot less shots (6 shots) finishing with only 15 points.

What's up with Webber?

I knew that C-Webb wasn't the same player he was in Sacramento, but this season he has looked very old and depreciated. It's not that difficult to understand why his minutes have been limited this season. He just doesn't provide much of anything anymore. I did think that he could contribute offensively after coming off an almost 20 ppg-10 rpg stat season last year. I didn't expect his offensive output to fall so quickly. Currently he is only shooting 39 percent from the field. A horrible number especially for someone at the Power Forward position. He is also only averaging about 11 points a game.

That is about 9 points down from last season. He just doesn't seem to finish plays like he use to. I find it troubling the C-Webb is upset about his limited playing time. I understand being a competitor and wanting to play quality minutes but he has to wonder whether he can still help a team at this point of his career. Defensively he is a major liability. And now that the team doesn't have the offense of Allen Iverson, they really can't afford too many mishaps on the defensive end. Unless C-Webb begins to step it up and be consistent offensively, he better get used to playing 20-25 minutes. I was hoping that since the Iverson trade his production would increase. It looked like it did in the beginning but it is now back to what he was doing most of the season. Even his free throw percentage is down to 64%.
Initially I thought when we first got him in the trade that he could really help the Sixers resurge into a quality contender, but the deal has turned out to be a mistake by Billy King. I do give him credit for taking a shot, unfortunately it hasn't worked out. Here's hoping C-Webb looks at his game and begins to alter it so he can be effective again. In particular with the jump shot that isn't much of a shot anymore...

The Philadelphia 76ers have spent much of the season trying to bounce back from poor performances. Now they'll look to rebound from one of their worst.

After scoring their fewest points of the season, the 76ers look for a better showing when they visit the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday.

Philadelphia (7-21) has failed to score 100 points in 13 straight games and was held to its lowest total in nearly a year in a 101-76 loss to the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday. It was the second-most lopsided loss of the season for the 76ers, who shot 39.7 percent (29-of-73) from the floor and failed to hit a 3-pointer for the second time this season.

Andre Iguodala led four starters in double figures with 15 points, but Philadelphia suffered its 18th loss in 21 games. The 76ers admitted they haven't found a groove since leading scorer Allen Iverson was traded to Denver on Dec. 19.

Iguodala drops a career high 32 points in Sixers 98-95 win over the Blazers

It's a game that you been waiting for from Andre Iguodala. Being aggressive offensively and becoming the go-to-guy that he now has to be. Iguodala played his best game as a pro leading the way for the Sixers with a career high of 32 points to snap their two game losing streak. Andre Miller also had his best game as a Sixer recording 25 points and 10 assist. The Sixers were able to hold off the Blazers down the stretch and pick up a much needed win. Kyle Korver got back to his sniping ways dropping 19 points in which he was 3-4 from three point land.

Despite Kyle Korver having a good shooting night and scoring 29 points, Kobe Bryant lead all scores with 35 points and added 8 rebounds and six assist. Andre Iguodala had 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Miller added 13 points and eight assists in his fifth game since joining Philadelphia in the trade that sent four-time scoring champ Allen Iverson to Denver. Bryant scoring 20 points in the third quarter blew the game open and the Sixers never recovered.

The Sixers will play an old friend tonight. Allen Iverson and the Denver Nuggets will be hosting the 76ers in what we be an interested game to watch. Will Iverson try to go out and score 50 against his old team or will he be more concerned about getting a win? You have to think that the Sixers will be up for the game and also want to get back on the winning side of things during this road stretch. Andre Miller and Joe Smith will also get a crack at their old team looking to have strong performances. This is definitely a must see game tonight!

Article - Charley Rosen: Maybe the Sixers had the right idea

Good article from a very good analyst from foxsports.com.

"Maurice Cheeks provided the first clue when, on Philly's initial possession of the game, he devised a post-up for Joe Smith. The play eventuated in a foul by Eduardo Najera, and Smith canned his two free throws. On the Sixers' second possession, Smith went at Najera one-on-one from the left wing — and knocked down a 17-foot jumper. Cheeks' obvious message was this: Take a look at what you traded away!"

The Jazz started off cold in the first half shooting only 34% percent from the field. But after that they quickly heated up going 20-38 in the second half. Boozer scored 22 of his 27 game high points in the second half. Former Sixer Matt Harping also was deadly, scoring 20, with 12 of them in the third. Deron Williams had 14 assist. The game started to really get away from the Sixers in the third quarter. They gave up too many easy uncontested shots in the second half. The Sixers are now 4-5 since the Allen Iverson trade and 2-4 on the current road trip in which they will wrap up Friday at Minnesota.

Garnett hit a mid range jumper to seal the deal and allow the Timberwolves to pick up a tough win. Sixers played well throughout getting strong contributions from Andre Miller, Andre Iguodala and Kyle Korver. Iguodala missed a shot late and Randy Foye got the rebound which set up the game winner by Garnett.

After finalizing the buyout for C-Webb yesterday, the Sixers had a tough time stopping Eddy Curry and Stephon Marbury last night. Curry was impressive in the post scoring 20 points and getting 10 rebounds for the Knicks. Marbury was also huge offensively for the Knicks dropping in 24 points. The Knicks shot 53% from the field and 47% from 3 point land. The Sixers perimeter defense was not good and they gave up way too many threes and uncontested shots. They made a run late but it was not enough. Dalembert has had two good games for the Sixers. Since the Webber deal is done, the Sixers are definitely in rebuilding mode and the growing pains will come this season.

Interesting article today in the Philadelphia Daily News by John Smallwood. Good read. Here's a preview. Full story link included.

"I HAVE BEEN wrong before. I already know that someday I'll be wrong again.

Writing opinions inherently means sometimes stepping out on a fragile limb that is bound to snap.

Still, I'm not sure if I've ever misread a situation as poorly as I did the 76ers' acquisition of Chris Webber."

According to ESPN.com, Chris Webber has been waived by the Philadelphia 76ers. Webber who has been injured most of the season, reached a buyout agreement with the Sixers to part ways with the franchise. The move will help the Sixers avoid a luxury tax hit this season. Webber contract is still on the Sixers books so there is no free cap money to work with. Webber was scheduled to make a little over 20 million this season and 22 million plus the next.

Earl Boykins made his Bucks debut scoring 11 points. Iguodala paired well with Green scoring 26 points, 6 assist & 6 boards.
