Will winning return to the Meadowlands, too? There is no guarantee, of course. But Harris does give the Nets a better chance to pick up that elusive first win of the season. He's their leading scorer and will take some pressure off of other guys on the floor, like Brook Lopez and Chris Douglas-Roberts. Look for Harris to ease into his role, playing more in the second half tomorrow than he does in the first. In fact, he'll be coming on the bench and probably will return to starting when the Nets play at Denver on Tuesday. Regardless of how much he plays, Harris is just happy to be back. Let's face it, watching this team lose over the past 10 games could not have been easy for him. "I’m not made for a suit," he said, referring to his game-day attire over the past three weeks. "I’m looking forward to getting up there and running up and down." It's obviously good for the Nets to get their de facto captain back, especially since he's a guy who can score and help improve upon the 84.4 points per game average. But the Nets have to be careful not to look at him as the savior. They've played decent defense in his absence and have to continue doing so, not letting up just because they'll likely be scoring more. "By no means do we present it as ‘Now we have Devin back,’" Lawrence Frank said. "No, look, Devin obviously is an outstanding player but he’s also missed significant time. It’s just everyone has to do his job. Everyone’s job description is different. If everyone does his job the wins will take care of themselves." More good news could be on the way. Courtney Lee, who also has a strained groin, says he's shooting to be back in time for the West Coast trip that begins on Tuesday in Denver before continuing to Portland, Sacramento and LA (against the Lakers). Frank didn't seem quite as optimistic as Lee but coaches never are, so we'll see. Like Frank, Lee said not to assume the Nets will be the Celtics once they return to good health. "I can't just say a couple guys being (back) is going to change things but that's what me and Devin are focusing on doing," said Lee. "He's going to be back earlier than me and then I'm coming back right after him and then whenever we get Yi (Jianlian) and Jarvis (Hayes), we'll be back at full force and therefore we'll have a lot of guys to run at you. Unfortunately, eight may have to be enough, maybe nine, against the Pacers. In fact, as of this morning, the Nets had about 8 1/2 men ready to take on Indiana. Forward Eduardo Najera was having his achy back worked on during shootaround and it wasn't clear whether or not he'd be able to play tonight. So whether there are eight or nine guys available for the game depends on him. We know this: Neither Devin Harris nor Courtney Lee will play tonight. Both are still recovering from strained groins. Yi Jianlian was doing the elliptical machine when we walked in the gym but he's still a couple of weeks away from coming back from a knee sprain. And Jarvis Hayes is getting closer but it doesn't seem like he will play anytime before the upcoming West Coast trip, which he said he intends to go on. As for that promotion the Nets are running, the team plans on giving two extra tickets to each season ticket holder with the hope that the arena will be more filled with fans than it usually is. "Your team has played very hard this season, but with an unprecedented amount of injuries we just haven't been able to attain a victory," Nets CEO Brett Yormark said in a release that was sent out on Sunday. "But even with the injuries, the entire team believes that '10 is Enough.' That's why we are asking you, our loyal fans, to rally around your team like never before at Tuesday night's game. So bring your enthusiasm, show your support, and let's get our first win." That sounds sort of, well, collegiate, doesn't it? But I give the Nets credit for trying anything they can to support the team, which really has been playing its fanny off. It's strange to say, but this doesn't seem like your typical 0-10 team. No one's passed the ball to a teammate who's getting ready to check in at the scorer's table. No one's shooting airballs from the foul line (I don't think). No one's tripping over their own shoelaces while backtracking up the court. The effort has been there and in most cases the performance has been too. They're just severely short-handed right now because of injuries.
