Not Everyone's Picking The Pack

I got an interesting email today from the PR flack (he says with professional courtesy) who usually emails about wagers on one of the online betting sites:
I thought you might be interested to see the Eagles 16 game simulation courtesy of Paul Bessire of www.PredictionMachine.com ... The state-of-the-art, Prediction Machine, was built by Paul Bessire, a statistician and veteran sports writer, who offers his in-depth analysis and unique takes through his blog posts and game predictions.

Instead of data mining to attempt to find historical trends ... [the Predictalator] plays an upcoming game 50,000 times before it's actually played ...

Blah blah, heard it before, except:
Paul Bessire, who built the Predictalator, is one of the foremost authorities on mathematically modeling and analyzing all sports. For more than six years since earning his Master's degree in Quantitative Analysis (with a focus on Finance and Sports), he has turned what was his longtime hobby of predicting and writing about sports outcomes into his full-time profession ...

Most recently, Paul Bessire served as the Product Manager of Quantitative Analysis and Content for FoxSports Interactive. There, Paul was responsible for the math behind the historical simulation sports games at WhatIfSports.com as well as any FoxSports.com, Scout.com or WhatIfSports.com articles that were created from that technology ...

Paul was also recently the featured speaker at the annual "Symposium on Statistics and Operations Research in Sports" that was held in St. Louis around the 2009 MLB All-Star Game.

Ok, you have my attention now. Paul gives the Eagles a 52 percent chance of winning this weekend, with a predicted final score of 20.4 - 19.7.His take on the NFC East is interesting and if you're a bargain shopper type, this is worth reading as well.

Donovan McNabb: A First Round Draft Pick, But Never First in My Heart

As a 40 year old female from Philadelphia who bleeds green, I am looking forward to seeing Donovan McNabb jog onto the field for his first official NFL game in his ugly new maroon and gold Redskins jersey. Over the course of his decade long stint in the city of Brotherly Love, I?ve experienced every possible emotion from elation and suspended disbelief when the Eagles reached the Super Bowl to the depths of despair and frustration after the Carolina NFC Championship playoff loss in 2003.
I?ve been through a lot as a lifelong Eagles fan. I recall sitting in a monsoon at the Vet, wearing my mother?s ridiculously large Morton Salt yellow slicker and rain hat, watching miserably as the hated Emmitt Smith rushed for 237 yards on a dreary Halloween in 1993. I downed as many $8 beers as the girl at the concession counter would allow. Following the 12 remaining people out of the stadium after the final clock expired, my tears mingled with the rain.
When Randall Cunningham broke his leg during a Jets game that same year and Eric Allen handed him the football after scoring on a defensive touchdown, I suddenly knew, as a 25 year old, what it was like to feel unconditional love.
More recently, after our best receiver in a decade left the team, I loyally marched down to the Linc and sacrificed my expensive # 81 T.O. jersey for the Howard Eskin-led burning ceremony.
The day the Vet became the only stadium in the league to have its own jail system, I was perversely proud. I later cried when the crumbling Vet was blown to smithereens, the only football stadium I had ever known.
So, when I found myself living in New York City with a free pass to the 1999 NFL Draft, with the Eagles holding the 2nd overall pick, you can imagine that I felt as if I had won the lottery.
On Draft Day, I carefully set three alarms for 7 a.m. to make sure I got there for the 10 a.m. door opening. Standing in a line that snaked around Penn Station by 9 a.m., I heard a painful screeching noise as six yellow school buses pulled up. Grown men with green and white face paint, intoxicated despite the early hour, squeezed out of every available slice of window, screaming. A tall, lanky 40-ish male exited the bus holding a black sickle, dressed head to toe in green and white, his shock of salt and pepper hair standing straight up. I recognized him as Angelo Cataldi, the brash host from the local sports radio station.
As the buses emptied, Cataldi led the group?s chanting. I don?t know what genius at the Garden decided it was a smart idea to serve beer at 10 a.m. to people who made it their job on football Sundays to start drinking at 6 a.m., but I?ve never seen so many people shriek with glee when spotting a concession stand.
Following the crowd, I noticed men and women in blue security shirts grow wide-eyed as the men in face paint ran with their two allotted beers towards the plush red seats like kids in a school yard. A dozen or so event staffers immediately ran to set up red velvet ropes, yelling for the Eagles fans to sit in the newly cordoned off section.
At a long table near the stage, ESPN?s commentators sat, getting ready for the broadcast. I watched each physically recoil as they got a glimpse of the rowdies. A few minutes later, a security guard was placed in front of their desk.
After what seemed like hours, the Eagles went on the clock. With seconds to spare, NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue finally stepped up to the podium. It was almost impossible to hear anything over the roar of the crowd.
?With the second overall pick of the 1999 draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select Donovan?..? Ear splitting boos cascaded down, drowning out Donovan?s last name. Multiple cameras swung away from the stage to the fans jumping up in down in indignation, their hands, and perhaps even a middle finger or two, waving wildly in the air. McNabb walked onto the stage under the glaring lights, amidst the din, and showed what would turn out to be the most negatively talked about facial expression in Philadelphia: his ?smirk-smile.?
Feeling pure disappointment at not getting a top caliber running back, I felt an overwhelming urge to boo. Ricky Williams was ?the man!? According to the experts, he would win us a ring! But, I held off joining the boo birds, as compassion won out. I noticed a small group of family in front of the stage that had stood up trying to clap louder, hugging McNabb as he walked down the stairs.
From my third row seat inside Madison Square Garden, I watched McNabb auspiciously begin his career as an Eagle ? committing the first of what would turn out to be countless sins: his name was not Ricky Williams.
Over the last decade, I have watched in disappointment as McNabb?s completions to the ground became a statistic and a promised Broad Street parade never materialized. Play calling, the lack of a top wide receiver (minus the T.O. debacle), and a series of brittle running backs were all factors in his inability to win the big one. But witnessing McNabb conduct a six minute drill against the Patriots in the Super Bowl, unable to score three points to tie the game, summed up all that was wrong with him as a quarterback.
When McNabb was traded to the Redskins this winter, I had a little celebration party. This fall, I look forward to see what the Eagles defense does when McNabb takes the field and the fans welcome him back to the Linc ?Philly Style? on October 3rd. I can already picture the ?smirk-smile.?

Five Reasons the Eagles Win on Sunday

The Eagles face a tough opponent right out of the gate on Sunday when the Packers come to town. This is a team who will contend for their division and are a likely playoff team. However, this doesn’t mean the Eagles are doomed. They’re far from it.

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/dvoa-ratings/2010/2010-dvoa-projectionsAnother reason why I love FootballOutsiders. These guys always seem to have the Eagles highly rated. And while their ratings may tend to be on the high side, they always seem to end up much closer than anyone thinks going into the season. Two really interesting things struck me: 1) Special teams are projected to be best in the NFL and 2) all NFC East teams are projected to be in the top half of the league. Going to be a tough, tough year.

Bradley Focused On Packers, Not Return

The questions keep coming. How does Stewart Bradley feel just days away from his first regular season football game since the 2008 season? Are there any lingering effects from the knee injury that sidelined him for all of last year? What kind of special feeling will it be to open 2010 against the Packers on Sunday?

This team has some pretty impressive pieces, but I just don't see the offensive line coming together, and I don't think Kolb plays very well under pressure. I also see major holes in the secondary. I don't think we've sufficiently addressed the corner situation. I think we're actually worse there than we were a year ago. And while Nate and Coleman look to have a decent future at safety for us, I can't see them having great years this year, and Mikell is a journeyman, below average starter at best.

Three years ago, the Brett Favre "will-he-won't-he" saga came to an end in Green Bay. Departing was a legendary figure at the quarterback position, and waiting patiently in the wings was the young heir apparent. This cool and steady first-year starter was no rookie, as he sat and watched one of the best at his position for three full seasons.

Green Bay's perspective on the Kolb-McNabb versus Rodgers-Favre successions
"The risks are huge. McNabb still might have a really good year or two left in him. He?ll be highly motivated and could embarrass Reid by beating the Eagles twice this year and finishing with a better record, maybe making the playoffs while Reid misses out. Imagine the reaction among the Eagles? fan base if that happens.

Now look at the flip side. By defying NFL conventional wisdom, Reid has foisted upon a rival a star player he?s judged for imminent decline, and at a substantial cost to that rival?s future. Reid is betting that in two years his franchise will be much better off with Kolb and the draft picks than with an old McNabb. If he?s weakened the Redskins over the longer term, so much the better."

The Eagles enter this first week of the NFL season about as healthy as they can be. Andy Reid said today "really I don't have anything to report for you on the injuries. Everybody will be suited up and practicing today."
It's good news, but the obvious concern isn't whether everyone is healthy enough to practice ... it's whether they're healthy enough to play effectively. Andy was specifically asked about Jamaal Jackson, who had offseason knee surgery and didn't play in the preseason, can he play four full quarters?

"A little bit of that's an unknown. I'll tell you that I feel comfortable with him, he feels comfortable and the doctors feel comfortable. But, I can't tell you that I'm not going to keep a close eye on him; I will do that. And Mike McGlynn and his experience at that center position is important for those first few weeks, here."

He was pressed as to what he meant by "comfortable?" Is he comfortable in Jackson not getting re-injured or in him being back physically.

"Well, I think he's back, yeah. Again, we just have to see. That's some of the unknown that I was saying. We just have to see how he does and sustains throughout a game. And he's got a pretty good task this week in their base defense. He's going to be covering every snap, so it will be a good challenge."

I think we'll all be keeping a close eye on him as well.

For those of you who follow Brandon Graham's Twitter account @BGraham54, you may have noticed his tweet from Monday afternoon:

its time to get ready for them Green Boys this week! I cant wait to whisper something in Aaron Rodgers ear.....SACK!!!!!!

When reporters told Rodgers of the rookie's taunt earlier today, Rogers was quick to respond:

Is he? I enjoy the banter back and forth. Always have. I enjoy going to a hostile environment. It just adds energy and electricity to the game. And Brandon's a really good player. He's going to be a really good player for a long time. I'm hopeful we'll be able to keep him off me and out of my ear.

As always, it's great to see the team fired up for the first week of the regular season. Graham seems to have a high level of confidence (and rightfully so) after stealing the starting defensive end position away from Juqua Parker during the preseason. Here's hoping that he converts that enthusiasm into defensive production, as the Eagles will need to bring everything they have against a Packers offense that finished third in the league in scoring last year (28.8 points per game). A few sacks and maybe a fumble recovery for a TD by Graham would be great. Please? I'm playing PHI defense in my fantasy league this week.

Know Your Enemy - GB

Each Wednesday I will focus on our upcoming opponent. Then on Thursday I'll put up a post on Strategy & Matchups to get into the game itself. Green Bay Packers11-5 in '09 ... Wildcard teamLost 51-45 in OT in shootout with Arizona in the playoffsThe
regular season starts Sunday. We've talked about the Eagles for months
now, but it is finally time to look at an opponent. The Packers are a
good team. They hosted the NFC Championship following the 2007 season.
Then Brett Favre left and Aaron Rodgers took over. The team dipped in
'08, but got back to winning and the playoffs last year. Now, they look
like one of the best teams in the league. They certainly played well
in the preseason, most notably scoring 59 points against Indy. We can only talk in generalizations since this is the season opener, but here goes. OFFENSEThe
Packers are a passing team and one of the best in the league in that
category. They are one of the best screen teams in the league, but are
also quite good at throwing dowfield. Green Bay is at its best when
they are able to effectively run the ball. They are up and down in that
area. In last season's 16 games, RB Ryan Grant had 61 or less yards 8
times. He had 90 or more yards 7 times. That's somewhat boom or bust.
The Packers only lost one game when he ran for 90 or more, a very
strange game against Tampa Bay. GB will score points. They had
24 or more points in 12 of 16 games last year. The good news is that
they only put up 21 points in the season opener. Maybe they'll be slow
out of the blocks. GB is dangerous on offense because they are
multi-dimensional. They can go with 3 or 4 wideouts and throw the ball
all over the field. They will line up in the I-formation and pound on
you at times. They also mix in TEs very effectively. PLAYERSQB
Aaron Rodgers --- Outstanding QB. Very gifted. Excellent arm. Can
make every throw. He's special on the move because he can throw from
different platforms and still be deadly accurate and put excellent
velocity on his passes. Good mobility. Does like to go downfield and
that means he will hold the ball at times. Takes his share of sacks and
hits. RB Ryan Grant --- Big back at 6'1, 222. Downhill
runner. Loves to attack the LOS and hit a crease. Isn't going to make
much happen on his own. Steady workhorse who will deliver big plays
when he has good blocking and is able to find a seam. OL ---
Mystery men. The O-line struggled for the first half of 2009. They
gave up a ton of sacks. They got veteran RT Mark Tauscher back from
injury and then things started to click. The interior is young and the
OTs are old. No one is sure what exactly to expect from this unit.
Will they be as cohesive and effective as late in the year or as
dysfunctional as early on? TE Jermichael Finley --- Big,
athletic pass catcher is hoping to have a breakout season. Very gifted.
Can make very tough catches and has good RAC ability. Last year had
55 grabs and 5 TDs. WR Greg Jennings --- One of the best WRs in
the NFL. Especially dangerous because he's so good downfield and on
short throws. Has good vertical speed and is comfortable catching deep
balls. Also had great RAC ability. Dangerous on slants and crossing
routes. WR Donald Driver --- Ol' Man River. To put things in
perspective, his first coach was Ray Rhodes. Wow, huh? Don't let the
age fool you. Just keeps catching passes and making plays. Very good
hands. Good RAC ability. DEFENSEThe Packers run a
3-4 attack. Dom Capers took a lot of heat early last year for his
gameplans, but over time the defense came together and had a solid year.
Capers is a coach that believes in building around specific players.
He saw last year that his best defensive player was Charles Woodson and
decided to use him creatively. He saw that rookie Clay Matthews was his
best pass rusher and used him accordingly. Capers isn't always
conventional, but his teams can be really good when he has the right
players. He did some great things in Pittsburgh in the early 90s and
then had succes in Carolina and Jacksonville. Expect a lot of creative
blitzes and different looks. The Packers had some good numbers
on D last year, but in reflection it is hard to tell how much of the
success was on them and how much was due to facing mediocre offenses.
After all, the Cards did put up 51 points on them in the Wildcard game.
That's insane. PLAYERSNT B.J. Raji --- Top 10 pick
in '09. Didn't have a great rookie year, but has incredible potential.
BJ is over 330 pounds, but has good feet and is quick/agile. He was a
dominant college player and I think we'll start to see some of that
talent this year. LB Clay Matthews --- Played ROLB last year,
but has moved to the left side. Led the team with 10 sacks. Quick,
athletic player, but also has a great motor. It will be interesting to
see if switching sides helps or hurts him. LB Brad Jones --- I
liked him as a late rounder coming out of Colorado. Emerged as starter
down the stretch for GB and had 4 sacks. Showed good pass rush ability.
He's now moving to the right side. I don't think he's got the ability
to consistently beat LTs so his production may be limited. IB
Nick Barnett --- The team's leading tackler and the heart of the
defense. Mans the middle. Solid run stuffer, but also a playmaker.
Had 4 sacks, 10 TFLs, and 7 PDs (passes defensed) last year. Had
arthroscopic knee surgery in the offseason, but is ready to go. CB
Charles Woodson --- Had the best year of his career in '09. NFL
Defensive Player of the Year. 3rd on the team in tackles. Also had: 9
INTs, 2 sacks, 4 FFs, 9 TFLs, 18 PDs. Scored 3 TDs. Not bad. Big,
physical CB. Still runs well and has elite ball skills. Likes to be
very physical with receivers. Capers moves him to the slot or Safety in
some packages. Excellent blitzer and tackler. Can he repeat '09?
Doubtful, but he can still be an impact player. Remember, this is the
only defensive player to ever win the Heisman. S Nick Collins
--- Playmaking Safety. Has 13 INTs over the last couple of years.
Dangerous once he makes the pick. Has 405 return yards to go with those
picks, the highest total in the league. S Morgan Burnett ---
Rookie will start in place of the injured Atari Bigby. Ball hawk who
makes a lot of plays. The downside is his tackling. Morgan will hit
receivers, but he struggles to be a consistent wrap-up tackler. Had a
solid preseason. CB Sam Shields --- UDFA will be the #3 CB for
the Packers. He's a project right now. Sam spent most of his career at
Miami as a WR. The 'Canes moved Sam (5'11, 185) to defense as a Senior
and he showed promise. Sam played well this summer, but it is hard to
say if he's ready for NFL passing attacks with his limited experience. SPECIAL TEAMSThe Packers have a new Punter in Tim Masthay. We'll have to see how he does.PK Mason Crosby is good from less than 50 yards. He was only 2 of 6 from 50+ last season. Green
Bay is unsettled now at the RS position. They brought in Clifton
Smith, recently cut by Tampa, but I don't know that he'll get signed.
The plan as of now is for WR Jordy Nelson to be the KOR and CB Tramon
Williams to be the PR. Williams has some experience and in fact did
return one punt for a TD back in '07. Nelson has been highly
ineffective on punts, but is solid as the KOR. GOOD LINKS2009 Packers StatsGB writers rank the Packers from 1 to 53GB seaon preview from their writers
