Bugel: Rinehart 'deserved a chance'

Benched after briefly starting at right guard earlier in the season, second-year guard Chad Rinehart remained focused and continued to work hard, and offensive line coach Joe Bugel noticed. Bugel convinced Coach Jim Zorn that Rinehart should be given another opportunity to work with the first team, and the former third-round draft pick responded well during the Week 10 victory over the Denver Broncos at FedEx Field. Rinehart is scheduled to make his first career start (fourth overall) Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys at the new Cowboys Stadium, and he has earned it, Bugel said. "I felt during that time where he wasn't a starter, watching him on the scout team servicing the defense, he was doing a heck of a job," Bugel said. "He was staying extra practice, getting in some work, and it came to the time where the kid deserved a chance. You know what I mean?

Coach Jim Zorn praised cornerback Carlos Rogers for responding well in practice this week after having been benched early in the Week 10 victory over the Denver Broncos, but Zorn would not commit to Rogers starting opposite top cornerback DeAngelo Hall on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys at the new Cowboys Stadium. "He could" start, Zorn said. "But right now, we've got a little mix going and we like what we're seeing out there. I like what I'm seeing in Carlos and how he's responding to the situation. "Sometimes it happens where you've just got to bide your time and wait for your next opportunity. I know with Carlos it'll come. And I think he knows it'll come as well." Secondary coach Jerry Gray has been similarly impressed with Rogers's approach this week. "He's responded great. He understands what he has to do and it's nothing new," Gray said. "The

Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis was at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center on Friday to have his concussion evaluated.

Portis saw the same doctors who examined Eagles back Brian Westbrook, who has suffered two concussions in the last month. Portis was hurt two weeks ago against Atlanta. He did not play last week against Denver and has been ruled out for Sunday's game at Dallas.

"We're going to make sure we take care of all the details.

Asked this week whether he intended to use the same five offensive linemen in Dallas that helped the Redskins end a four-game losing streak against Denver, Redskins Coach Jim Zorn offered a smile. In a season that has presented few easy answers, the head coach was finally lobbed an easy question.

Defense prepares for Cowboys' attack

The Redskins gave up 40- and 75-yard touchdown passes in the first quarter of their Week 10 victory over the Denver Broncos. Obviously, the defense must do a better job Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys at the new Cowboys Stadium. "Well the big plays come from [Dallas quarterback] Tony Romo," secondary coach Jerry Gray said. "He scrambles a lot, and does a lot of things to get guys open, and receivers are always working down the field. You see Miles Austin, all of the sudden he comes up with a 200-yard game because he works after the catch. It's not just, 'I'm going to beat you.' He actually works to get open, and he does a great job. That's really what you want to do when you've got a wide receiver like that." The Redskins' defense ranks No. 1 against the pass, giving up an average of 162.7 yards and

Portis sees another concussion specialist

The Redskins sent running back Clinton Portis to Pittsburgh today for a consultation with another specialist to gauge his recovery from a concussion suffered Nov. 8 in Atlanta. Portis has not practiced this week and will miss his second straight game Sunday. "Each day Clinton has done a great job in communciating how he's felt, and that's what it's going to take," Coach Jim Zorn said today. "And also, we communicate, we continually send him to send [a Washington specialist] and now we're going to send him to Pittsburgh to see a specialist there. So we're going to make sure that we take care of all those details." The Redskins aren't certain when Portis will be ready to return. Their priority, Zorn says, is Portis' health and well-being. "We're for Clinton getting well, and I think he is too," Zorn said. "It just takes a continual communication. And I want to be involved

Pro Bowl defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (ankle) will be listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys at the new Cowboys Stadium, Coach Jim Zorn said today after practice at Redskins Park. "Albert was on the treadmill today working," Zorn said. "It'll be a game-time decision whether he can go or not. I'm going to lean more toward having him up [active], seeing what he can do. "I'm an optimistic person and I'm definitely going to wish that for myself with Albert because we'd love to have him on the field. But it will be a game-time situation."

This year, Romo will see a new pass rush

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has taken a lot of heat for his poor performance late in the season and during the playoffs. But Romo sure knows how to extend plays, Coach Jim Zorn said. "It is just awful to have to cover longer than you really want to," Zorn said. "We've got to try to get to him and make him be concerned about" the pass rush. poll by twiigs.com The Redskins (3-6) are last in the NFC East and the Cowboys (6-3) are atop the division. For the Redskins to pull closer to the Cowboys, they must corral Romo in the pocket and end passing plays quickly. "When he extends, when he moves around, when he flinches the ball, it causes the secondary, the linebackers, to hesitate, to go, to move," Zorn said. "And then if he can pull it down and have time to hit somebody else,

Have You Actually Gone Back and Looked at that Sideline Scrum in the Falcons Game?

Easy targetSo two weeks ago in game eight against the Falcons, Atlanta's fifth possession, second quarter, on third and three near midfield and the Redskins trailing 21-3, quarterback Matt Ryan scrambles four yards for the first down. Redskins safety LaRon Landry comes in from the defensive secondary, too late, and hits Matt out of bounds, penalty flag, fifteen yards personal foul late hit.Cornerback DeAngelo Hall follows his teammate to the sideline, arriving at nearly the same time as LaRon. The camera follows Matt Ryan the ground, he rolls and pops back up unhurt, as the camera follows Matt back toward the field of play, a Falcons staffer, presumably Director of Athletic Conditioning Jeff Fish, appears to shove LaRon out of the way, LaRon keeps going back to the field and is out of the action until the coming scrum is already at critical mass. After shoving LaRon out of the way this Falcons staffer grabs DeAngelo by the jersey with both hands and begins shaking him. Within two seconds Falcons players and head coach Mike Smith are on top of DeAngelo, and coach Smith appears to grab DeAngelo with his right hand, up under DeAngelo's right shoulder, yelling at him.The camera pans out then back in quickly, as DeAngelo backs or is pushed toward the field of play, coach Smith moves around in front of DeAngelo, still appears to have hold of DeAngelo with one hand, shaking. Here is where it gets interesting.Cornerback Justin Tryon appears from camera left, clearly trying to extract DeAngelo, LaRon also reappears, but he is incidental to the action. As DeAngelo continues to try and disengage, and with the referee literally right there in the center of the scrum, the Falcons head coach gives DeAngelo and Justin a forearm across the facemask. At this point coach Smith is pulled off by Falcons players, at that point all the principal action is over, defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth appears and moves the pile but that is not germane to the previous action. Penaties are assessed, Atlanta's drive continues, ending in a field goal to push the Falcons' lead to 24-3.While reasonable people can disagree what actually happened in this scrum, and of course we have no idea what was said by any of the parties in those first seconds of the scrum, it would certainly appear to me that all relevant contact was initiated by the Falcons and that Mike Smith's assertion that he did not know who was in the pile, there were a bunch of people and he was just trying to break it up is bullshit. Coach Smith is clearly on top of DeAngelo and I seriously doubt he did not know that was the former player he helped usher out of town.Go check the video yourself, it is here. Everything you need to see happens in the first 23 seconds. Twenty-three, ha.Unfortunately for DeAngelo he does not get the benefit of the doubt in these situations, he once committed three penalties on the same drive in 2007, then blew up on the sideline at Falcons rookie head coach Bobby Petrino. He groused about his coach and team relations in Atlanta soured. Later he was fined by the league for inappropriate displays of support for Michael Vick, who had just been sentenced to prison. After Bobby Petrino resigned suddenly to return to the college ranks, DeAngelo was traded amid rancor to the Oakland Raiders who promptly signed him to a seven year, seventy million dollar contract. DeAngelo never jelled with Oakland's scheme and after coach Lane Kiffin was fired, DeAngelo was cut only eight games into that giant contract.Perhaps most relevant to this sideline scrum two weeks ago, is this bizarre story, that in what would turn out to be DeAngelo's last game with the Raiders, against his former team the Falcons, DeAngelo lingered in the tunnel at halftime of the game, harassing his former teammates and trying to pick a fight.Fast forward to the week before the Redskins played the Falcons this season, DeAngelo swore up and down that he is misunderstood and that he is working to rehabilitate his image, then he still manages to find his way into an altercation with his old team. Can't wait until the Redskins play at Oakland in game thirteen next month.DeAngelo Hall with the Raiders in 2008, obviously before game nine: Getty Images from here.

Hunter Smith is getting a lot of attention for a punter.

First, his position coach claimed with a straight face during training camp that Smith might be the best holder in the history of the NFL.

Then Smith showed up at practice one day wearing strange, seamless burgundy and gold shoes, a can't-miss moment for TV cameras.

In the Washington Redskins' season opener he scored a touchdown, running 8 yards on a fake field goal.

Then he got hurt. Twice.

Happy Birthday DeAngelo Hall

If you want an interception, ask this guyPlease join me and the entire staff of The Curly R in wishing Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall a happy birthday, DeAngelo turns 26 today.DeAngelo made his way to the Redskins circuitously, a midseason signing last year who made his mark immediately with an interception against Dallas in a close game ten loss, after a terrific half season the Redskins elected to keep DeAngelo, signing him this offseason to a six year, 55 million dollar contract, DeAngelo immediately moved into the principal cornerback position replacing five year Redskin Shawn Springs. This season DeAngelo has four of the team's five interceptions, including a two pick performance against Denver this past week. Whatever we as fans may think about this year's team, DeAngelo has been a big part of a defensive unit this is currently ranked number one in passing defense, allowing a meager 162 yards passing per game. Times may be tough, there is plenty of cause for hope on this team.Happy birthday DeAngelo!DeAngelo Hall: Getty Images from here.

As I said earlier this week, we can't simply reserve our complaints about the current debacle surrounding our team for weeks when we lose. However, during Dallas Week, we can tone it down slightly so that the focus of the week remains firmly where it should be--on the reviled Cowgirls.

I had a great opportunity to interview Joe Theismann at a recent event at Fed Ex Field. The event was a Health Awareness program for veterans, sponsored in part by GlaxoSmithKline. In the beginning of the interview, I gave Joe a chance to speak about both the event itself as well as how he came to be a part of it. I had the opportunity to mingle around with some of the veterans' groups that had set up booths, and I have to tell you it was great to talk to so many folks who are doing so much to help both our current troops as well as former members of the military. I'd like to say a special thank you to the folks at Cohn & Wolfe for coordinating this interview with Hogs Haven and Joe Theismann.

Now, before you watch the video, keep in mind, I barely call myself a writer, much less a TV personality. I threw myself on the proverbial grenade of public scrutiny to get some answers out of Joe. So for all of you aspiring TV folks, feel free to use this video and its many flaws as a lesson on what not to do when conducting an interview. That said, it was a ton of fun, and I think I ultimately did get a few good thoughts out of the very polished, and very careful quarterback.

Since I was standing in the Redskins locker room, the last thing I wanted to do was pointedly ask Joe a question that would rile him or be considered tactless. I mean, I didn't expect the guy to stand there and bash the team. But I still had to address the biggest issue on all of our minds--was Vinny at fault and should he be fired. Joe let me off the hook big-time by sifting through what he called my "political correctness". I must say I am a little shocked that he doesn't think Vinny is completely to blame.
I was also a bit discouraged to hear that he had no name to give me as a guy on this roster who is a potential candidate to step up and be the leader on this team that Chris Samuels has always been. His answer was very honest though, and extremely telling of the uncertainty surrounding the future of this team. When I asked him about offensive philosophy, I was actually trying to get Joe to break down a scheme or a system that he thought would work. What I got though was pretty clear: Theismann does not appear to think Cerrato and Snyder hired a guy who brought a system that fit the players already on the roster. Isn't it interesting that we are saying things like, "Zorn didn't pan out?" I mean, they brought a guy in who is a West Coast offense guy and hand him a team that is built on the power running game. And it is Zorn's fault? (I know...I already took a beating last week for suggesting Zorn should be given more time, but at least on this point we could possibly have some agreement.)
I'll let it go at that today. I am getting very fired up for the upcoming game against the loathsome Cowgirls. A win over that team goes a very long way in this town. It would ease a lot of the pain associated with the treatment of the greatest fans in the world. We intend to continue to hold these guys responsible and will do our best to continue to put questions to the folks who can help us get answers. As Joe said at the end, patience is the key. Not just in terms of waiting for the players to click and play well, but also in terms of our efforts to get through to the team to try and get this thing turned around.

Using the most basic fact, the argument could be made that Washington is playing better than any other team in the NFC East right now.

Yes, those 3-6 Redskins without Clinton Portis. Better even than the division-leading Dallas Cowboys, who they play Sunday in the 99th game of their ever-bitter rivalry.

Simply put, the last-place Redskins are the only NFC East team that won its last game.

Sellers prefers to let actions speak for him

After word emerged about the locker-room altercation earlier this season between running back Clinton Portis and fullback Mike Sellers, some Redskins fans criticized Sellers's blocking on Internet message boards and sports-talk radio shows. During a 16-13 victory in Week 4 over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Portis went to coaches in an effort to have Sellers demoted for what Portis deemed to be poor blocking. Apparently in siding with Portis, fans criticized Sellers for the team's unproductive running game to start the season, believing Portis would have been more effective if Sellers had blocked better. But many in the organization told me Sellers's blocking was not what had derailed the running game. Portis was not in top form to start the season and his lackadaisical attitude toward practice did not help. After watching Ladell Betts and Rock Cartwright gain chunks of yards since Portis has been sidelined with a concussion, I

Portis ruled out; Haynesworth a gameday decision

Running back Clinton Portis (concussion) was officially ruled out of Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys, but he might accompany the team on the trip, Coach Jim Zorn said today after practice. "Clinton is going to continue to be monitored, he's going to continue to be checked, but we're not going to play him this week," Zorn said. Portis suffered a concussion early in a 31-17 loss in Week 9 to the Atlanta Falcons and sat out Washington's 27-17 victory in Week 10 over the Denver Broncos. Portis's vision "is just a little bit blurry," Zorn said. "It's just foggy enough for me to not trust. I want to see him practice.

David Halprin, who is the lead blogger for the Cowboys' SB Nation website, Blogging the Boys, and I had a brief gmail chat talking about the big game.
We talked about what their 2 major injuries mean (Colombo and Hamlin), why they refuse to run the ball, and if the DAL/WAS rivalry is still big in DAL (it's not). I tried throwing in some jabs to rile him up, but he didn't bite:
Kevin: What are your thoughts this Sunday? You have a lot of big injuries. Lets start with Doug Free replacing RT Marc Columbo...is he going to be able to handle [Andre Carter]? He's never started a game before

David: That's the question we all want answered. We've had Free for a few years now but never had the need to start him. Now we do. Free actually played well against the Packers and wasn't one of the problems our offense had in Green Bay. He's got great athleticism and did well in pass protection, we'll just have to see how he measures up this week.

Kevin: Did Witten have to stay in more to help pass block? That would help the Skins out a lot.

David: Not at all, Free was left on his own for most of the game in pass protection and only had a few bad plays in that area. They would probably use a different TE (Bennett or Phillips) or one of the backs if they give him help.

Kevin: What about Hamlin's replacement? I know he's one of the verbal leaders on that D.

David: That's a tough one, Alan Ball will replace him, he was originally a cornerback but he worked at safety most of training camp this season. He's not the biggest guy and not having Hamlin QB'ing the secondary will hurt some. Our safety play has improved a lot this season, but without Hamlin it's a little worrying.

Kevin: What's to worry about? Santana Moss never does any damage in Big D!

David: ha

Kevin: Flozell and Kosier going to be OK or gimpy? Haynesworth was still in a boot yesterday but expected to play.

David: I don't expect any problems with Flozell or Kosier, unless you've heard something I haven't?

Kevin: DallasNews.com said they're nursing ankle sprains but should play. Gurode made any comments about Haynesworth this week? I can't imagine he's looking forward to dealing with him again

David: I don't think Gurode has any problem going against Haynesworth, the reason he stomped his head in the first place is because Gurode was getting the better of him. Gurode kind of let that incident pass really quickly, he never said too much about it after it was over.

Kevin: So Dallas has a 2nd best 5.1 yards per carry in the NFL but a 24th ranked rushing attempts...any reason the Cowboys keep abandoning the run?

David: Over the years, OC Jason Garrett sometimes falls in love with the pass. If the run games breaks down even a little bit, or if the Cowboys are moving the ball through the air, he has no problem continuing airing it out. Sometimes it's the flow of the game, like in Green Bay, where the offense just wasn't clicking and they got desperate to pass. It's a constant subject of contention in Dallas and was brought up a lot this week. It's hard to diagnose, but my personal feeling is that Garrett, a former QB, loves to put the ball in the air.

Kevin: how much do you guys miss Roy WIlliams the Safety? I know us Redskins fans miss him dearly there.

David: Gerald Sensabaugh has been a great addition. He's athletic enough to cover TE's and even WR's occasionally, but is tough enough to stick his nose into the running game. He's shown good instincts for finding the ball and making a play. We're thrilled with his performance so far.

Kevin: wow. Cowboys are -13 faves. what's your prediction?

David: I think that's a ridiculous line, considering it's a rivalry game in the NFC East. I do think that Dallas will come out on top, but I would guess more like a FG or TD separation, not 13 points.

Kevin: actually, the line has moved to -11

David: It's getting closer

Kevin: when do you think the Cowboys will win a playoff game? ha

David: really, that's the best you got?

Kevin: I don't need to say anything, when December comes, Romo's play will do all my talking for me I've always questioned if Wade Phillips' head set is even plugged in...he seems to have no clue what's going on.

David: well this is veering off track...anyway, can we do my questions for you tomorrow, i got no more time right now

(several hours later...)
Kevin: The DAL/WAS rivalry is still as big as ever in DC. It's all people talk about the week before and the week after, and there is a hatred there for Dallas fans. Does Dallas still have that reciprocal passion against Washington? Is there a big buildup in D anytime you guys face us?

David: The Dal/Was rivalry is not as big in Dallas anymore. I don't think there is that reciprocal hatred for the Redskins like there was before. Don't get me wrong, we still hate the Skins, but it's not the same for us anymore. It seems like the Eagles are the team the Cowboys fanbase really gets up for now. That's where the real passionate hatred is directed. So no, it's not at all like what you're seeing on your end.

Kevin: it doesn't help when the Skins have had a decade of mediocrity

David: I think that's part of the problem, but for whatever reason, probably becasue they've been winning big over the last decade, the Eagles win the most-hated NFC opponent on polls I run on my blog, with the Giants usually second

I answered about a dozen of his questions, so I'll post a link to that when it comes up.
Another key to the game for the Skins. STARTING STRONG:
The Redskins have been outscored 59-17 in the 1st quarter and 120-50 in the 1st half of games this year.
