    <title>Evaluating The Lions' Roster Cuts</title>
    <description>

The final round of roster cuts has passed and the Lions spent Sunday finalizing the roster for their week one game against the Chicago Bears. As a result, it's time to take a look at who the Lions got rid of over the weekend en route to establishing their 53-man roster.
RB DeDe Dorsey - Dorsey showed a lot of promise in the preseason, but this was a numbers game at running back and he was simply the odd man out.
WR Tim Toone - It was obvious from watching Toone play in the preseason that he is not quite ready for the show just yet, which is why he was signed to the practice squad. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he's on the 53-man roster by the end of the season, though.

WR Mike Moore - Another practice squad player.
WR Brian Clark - I thought he had an outside chance of making the team because of his special teams play, but the Lions didn't keep enough receivers for that to happen.
OT Jon Jansen - I didn't think the Lions would actually get rid of Jansen considering he challenged Gosder Cherilus for the starting job at right tackle, but in the end they opted to keep the younger Corey Hilliard.
OT Cliff Louis - No surprise here.
OG Noah Franklin - No surprise here.
C Dan Gerberry - As expected, Dylan Gandy got the edge as the backup center/guard. Gerberry has been signed to the practice squad again, though.
DE Korey Bosworth - No surprise here.
DT Landon Cohen - Based on what I saw in the preseason, I gave Cohen the edge over Andre Fluellen. Perhaps because of his versatility, the coaches opted for Fluellen over Cohen, who was quickly picked up by Jacksonville.
DT Jaron Baston - No surprise here.
DT Robert Callaway - Callaway was released at the beginning of camp but came back and earned a spot on the practice squad.
LB Caleb Campbell - Everybody was rooting for Campbell to make the roster, but it seemed pretty clear to me he would have to make a stop on the practice squad before that happens, which is why he has been signed to it.
LB Vinny Ciurciu - I thought Ciurciu played well enough at middle linebacker first in place of Jordon Dizon and later in place of DeAndre Levy to make the team, but the coaches opted for guys like Isaiah Ekejiuba and Ashlee Palmer, who can also play special teams and LB.
CB Dre Bly - This was one of the more surprising moves. While I didn't think Bly played out of this world in the preseason, I expected him to make the team. Instead, the Lions went with younger guys rather than the aging Bly.
CB Eric King - This also surprised me, not because King played even remotely well during the preseason, but because I thought he would stick around as a nickel back. When Alphonso Smith was traded for, however, King became expendable.
CB Dante Wesley - I figured Wesley would make the team considering he was in the two-deep and is a good special teams player, but the Lions decided to keep someone like Aaron Berry around instead.
CB Paul Pratt - Pratt was barely edged out for a roster spot, which is why the Lions signed him to the practice squad.
CB Jonathan Hefney - The same goes for Hefney, who was also signed to the practice squad.
CB T.J. Rushing - Rushing was versatile, but not good enough at corner to make the team.
S Ko Simpson - I thought Simpson would make the team instead of someone like John Wendling, but the Lions decided to let the often-injured veteran go.
K Steven Hauschka - I know many fans wanted Hauschka to stick around as a kickoff specialist, but the coaches obviously felt he isn't that much better than Jason Hanson at kickoffs to warrant a spot on the team. I agree, as the Lions don't have enough depth at other positions to take four specialists.
Those players were let go on Friday and Saturday, whereas the following players were either traded on Saturday or released on Sunday.
WR Dennis Northcutt - Many expected Northcutt to be released on Saturday, so it wasn't surprising to see him replaced by Stefan Logan on Sunday.
TE Dan Gronkowski - I am a fan of Gronkowski, but the Lions' top three tight ends have been set for a while, so Detroit decided to get something out of him by trading him to Denver for Alphonso Smith. I think Gronkowski will do well, but this was a good move for Detroit.
LB Rocky Boiman - Boiman was let go in favor of Spencer Havner, who will apparently play linebacker, special teams and some offense for the Lions.

    <title>Lions Announce Alphonso Smith Trade</title>
    <description>

Continuing to catch up on all the roster moves made over the weekend, the Lions finally announced the trade with Denver involving cornerback Alphonso Smith. As you likely know by now, Detroit sent tight end Dan Gronkowski to Denver for Smith.
The other compensation involved with this trade is the exchange of undisclosed 2011 draft picks. It's unknown what specific draft picks were given up or if this was simply a swap of picks in one round, but it appears both teams gave up a player and a pick in this deal.

    <title>Detroit Lions Name Four Captains</title>
    <description>

The Detroit Lions will have four captains this season -- two on offense, one on defense and one on special teams.
The Lions' two offensive captains are Matthew Stafford and Dominic Raiola. There's no doubt that Stafford has taken control of the offense and the team in general, quickly becoming a leader in year two of his NFL career. Then Raiola is one of the most outspoken players on the team, so it's no surprise that he is a captain.
On defense, I think everybody expected Kyle Vanden Bosch to be the captain, so it's no surprise that he is one of them. From the minute he signed he became a veteran leader for the defense. During training camp, he served as a mentor for the younger defensive players and showed them all what kind of hustle is expected, serving as not only a leader but a role model as well.
On special teams, the captain is once again Jason Hanson. No surprises there, just as there were really no surprises with the other players that were named captains of the Lions.

Although the Lions established their 53-man roster yesterday, that was merely the rough draft. The Lions will scour the waiver wire in the coming days before putting together a roster that they will head to Chicago with next week to start the 2010 NFL season.
It remains to be seen just how many additional moves will be made, but the Lions made two today, claiming Spencer Havner off waivers and releasing Dennis Northcutt.
Havner was released yesterday by the Packers. He started his career as a linebacker and converted to tight end last offseason. In 2009, he appeared in all 16 games, starting once for Green Bay. In total, he had seven catches for 112 yards and four touchdowns.
Northcutt being released means the Lions appear to be content with carrying only four receivers on the roster. With four tight ends as well, Detroit still has plenty of depth when it comes to pass-catchers, allowing them to run a lot of two-tight end sets. It also means that they are comfortable with someone on the roster returning punts. Northcutt was going to handle punt returns, but with him gone, I would expect to see somebody like the newly-acquired Alphonso Smith taking them back for the Lions.

    <title>Lions Practice Squad Taking Shape</title>
    <description>

The Lions can add eight players to their practice squad, and so far five have been signed (that we know about):
WR Tim TooneWR Mike MooreDT Robert CallawayLB Caleb CampbellCB Paul Pratt
All five of those players were released by the Lions yesterday. I would imagine the final three spots, assuming the Lions use them, will include players they released yesterday as well, although free agents that weren't on the team and weren't picked up off waivers can also be signed to the practice squad.
An official announcement about the practice squad will likely be made in the next 24 hours.

    <title>NFL Roster Cuts: Lions Establish 53-Man Roster</title>
    <description>

The final round of NFL roster cuts took place today, and the Lions trimmed their roster down to 53 players by parting ways with the following:

RB DeDe Dorsey
WR Brian Clark
WR Tim Toone
WR Mike Moore
OG Noah Franklin
OT Jon Jansen
OT Cliff Louis
C&amp;nbsp; Dan Gerberry
DT Landon Cohen
DT Jaron Baston
DT Robert Calloway
LB Caleb Campbell
LB Vinnie Ciurciu
CB Dante Wesley
CB Paul Pratt
CB T.J. Rushing
CB Dre' Bly
CB Eric King
S&amp;nbsp; Ko Simpson
K&amp;nbsp; Steve Hauschka
Waived/Injured - DE Korey Bosworth

Also, as previously mentioned, TE Dan Gronkowski was traded to the Denver Broncos along with what is thought to be a late round draft pick for second year CB Alphonso Smith.
I guess the surprises today are probably Jansen, Bly&amp;nbsp;and King.&amp;nbsp; Jansen appeared to be a lock as he and Cherilus shared time with the starting unit&amp;nbsp;throughout the preseason, but in the end, the youth movement sealed his fate.&amp;nbsp; King was made expendable by a trade few saw coming.&amp;nbsp; Although his play left a lot to be desired, I believed that he would make the final roster for&amp;nbsp;his contributions at the nickel spot.&amp;nbsp; As for Bly, I'm not sure what to think.&amp;nbsp; I guess once again getting younger as a team&amp;nbsp;is the likely reason, but I sure thought there was a place for him on this roster.
In case you didn't notice, Kevin Smith is not on this list.

    <title>NFL Roster Cuts: Lions Release Vinny Ciurciu</title>
    <description>

According to Kevin Seifert on the ESPN NFC Blog, the Lions have released LB Vinny Ciurciu.&amp;nbsp;
I think with how well Landon Johnson has played, this shouldn't be a huge surprise.&amp;nbsp; I thought that Ciurciu&amp;nbsp;may&amp;nbsp;have&amp;nbsp;shown enough to be considered dependable depth and a good special teamer, but there are not many spots to go around.&amp;nbsp; I do believe that Ciurciu was hurt in the Buffalo&amp;nbsp;game as well, which may have contributed to the decision.

    <title>NFL Roster Cuts: Lions Release Ko Simpson</title>
    <description>

With Amari Spievey moving to safety, Ko Simpson is officially the odd man out, according to Adam Schefter.

Lions released former Bills veteran S Ko Simpson.

Simpson joined the Lions via a trade late in the 2009 preseason and was banged up quite a bit during his year in Detroit. He spent the first part of training camp on the PUP list this year and just never seemed to be able to get healthy. With Louis Delmas and C.C. Brown entrenched as the starters at safety, Randy Phillips emerging this preseason and Spievey making the move from cornerback, Simpson became expendable.
The Lions are now down to 70 players on their roster, meaning 17 more moves are necessary before 6 p.m.

    <title>NFL Roster Cuts: Lions Release DeDe Dorsey</title>
    <description>

The running back position for the Lions provided one of the most interesting battles to watch this preseason. Jahvid Best is really the only true lock, leaving the others to battle for either two or three additional spots. It remains to be seen just how many backs the Lions will keep, but it seems one player already has been let go based on this tweet from DeDe Dorsey:

Welp...it was fun Detroit...

Dorsey had an exceptional preseason, so this move was all about a lack of room at the position rather than him not playing well. I'd bet Dorsey lands somewhere, as he showed a lot of promise during training camp and the preseason.

Caleb Campbell has been released by the Lions, but according to him on Twitter, he will have a spot on the practice squad.

Campbell has to clear waivers before the Lions can put him on the practice squad, but I don't expect another team to sign him to their 53-man roster, so he should stay with the franchise. While some may view this as a setback, just look at what Zack Follett did a year ago. He was released, signed to the practice squad and then became a starter. Being put on the practice squad is not a bad thing by any means.

    <title>NFL Roster Cuts: Lions Release Jon Jansen (UPDATED)</title>
    <description>

I'm not 100% sure if this is actually Jon Jansen or not, but a Twitter account that supposedly belongs to him posted the following tweet this morning:

I was just told by the Lions I'm being cut today. Needless to say I'm disappointed. I enjoyed playing for my home team and the city of Det.

If true, the Lions have decided to keep the younger Corey Hilliard instead of the veteran Jansen. Hilliard was given a big vote of confidence when he started at left tackle against the Bills, and with room for only four tackles, Detroit simply didn't have room for Jansen with Hilliard on board.
I personally believe it would be wise to keep Jansen around, but one of the things with roster cuts is that tough decisions will be made, and this was definitely one of them.
UPDATE: All signs point to that indeed being Jansen's account, so I think we can safely say that the Lions have released him.

    <title>NFL Roster Cuts: Lions Release Tim Toone</title>
    <description>

According to Pride of Detroit user thePROD1GY, wide receiver Tim Toone posted on his Facebook page that he was released by the Lions.
The wide receiver position is pretty crowded, so this would come as no surprise, especially since the Lions may keep only four wideouts. Toone does have a great chance of making the practice squad, though. If the Lions do indeed keep only four receivers, then having one or two on the practice squad will be necessary, so I think Toone will be kept around despite being released.

    <title>Jon Jansen Likely Done After Release</title>
    <description>by Michael David SmithFiled under: Lions, NFC NorthThe NFL career of offensive tackle Jon Jansen may have come to an end on Saturday, when he was released by the Detroit Lions.

The 34-year-old Jansen wrote on Twitter that he got cut.

&quot;I was just told by the Lions I'm being cut today,&quot; Jansen tweeted. &quot;Needless to say I'm disappointed. I enjoyed playing for my home team and the city of Det.&quot;

Jansen grew up in Michigan and played his college football at Michigan, and he has indicated that the Lions were the team he wanted to end his career with. He signed with Detroit in 2009 and started two games, but the Lions have decided to move on, and he probably won't sign elsewhere in 2010.&amp;nbsp;Permalink&amp;nbsp;|&amp;nbsp;Email this&amp;nbsp;|&amp;nbsp;Linking&amp;nbsp;Blogs&amp;nbsp;|&amp;nbsp;Comments</description>
