From the&amp;nbsp;Press-Gazette: The Green Bay Packers workout two players. Normally it's not a big deal when the Packers schedule workouts during the season. They do it all the time just to keep their information on available free agents current in case they need to make a quick addition. However, with these two workouts it appears they are still looking to tweak the roster.
&amp;nbsp;- KR Clifton Smith. The former 2008 Pro Bowl player&amp;nbsp;returned a kickoff for a TD against the Packers&amp;nbsp;last season. He didn't seem like a typical player for GM Ted Thompson. I can't ever recall having a kick return specialist on the roster who didn't have some future as a position player. Apparently the feeling was mutual because&amp;nbsp;Jason Wilde reported&amp;nbsp;that Smith has signed with the Dolphins.
&amp;nbsp;- S Gerald Alexander was described by Alfie at&amp;nbsp;Big Cat Country&amp;nbsp;as &quot;their best safety&quot; who is &quot;adequate at everything.&quot; Neither S Derrick Martin or S Charlie Peprah have a solid hold onto a roster spot, so Alexander could supplant one of those players.&amp;nbsp;Ironically, one of the stars of the 2009 preseason was S Anthony Smith,&amp;nbsp;who has won the starting strong safety job&amp;nbsp;in Jacksonville this season. It looks like Jaguar fans&amp;nbsp;aren't sorry to see Alexander go.
I'm just starting to look ahead to the Eagles. The week 3 game against the Chiefs was supposed to show what their new offense could do under QB Kevin Kolb, but&amp;nbsp;it turned out to be a dud. Over at&amp;nbsp;Bleeding Green Nation&amp;nbsp;is a reminder that it was just one preseason game and there is no need to panic.

    <title>The APC Fantasy Football Draft On The Eve Of The Season</title>
    <description>

I'm nuts, but as a favor to a manager I changed the draft night for one of the two Acme Packing Company fantasy football leagues. By making that change it now means I'm running both drafts at almost the same time tomorrow night. Maybe I should just draft the same players for both teams just to keep it clear.&amp;nbsp;
And based on my best guess, I'm not going to avoid RB Maurice Jones-Drew since&amp;nbsp;there doesn't appear to be any concern about his knee. While the&amp;nbsp;average draft position&amp;nbsp;has QB Aaron Rodgers at No. 7, I'd take him ahead of RB Frank Gore and WR Andre Johnson. Where has Rodgers been going in your fantasy drafts?

    <description>Three story lines Mirror images? Eagles QB Kevin Kolb is hoping to emerge the same way his game counterpart, Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, has. Rodgers, who replaced icon Brett Favre in Green Bay, has fast become a top-five quarterback. The jury?s out on Kolb, who replaced fixture Donovan McNabb. Kolb can?t match Rodgers? arm strength but shares similar athleticism and accuracy. Offense doesn?t rest: Don?t be surprised if some crooked numbers appear on the scoreboard.</description>

    <title>Community Poll: Keep The Comments Open Longer</title>
    <description>

Since I began&amp;nbsp;Acme Packing Company&amp;nbsp;in 2007, I've always left comments open for only seven days. My primary concern has been trolls and spam, but some members have said they'd prefer leaving the comments open longer. Many of you have noticed there is a probationary membership of one day, which is done to keep the robo-spam at bay. It probably does a good job of discouraging trolls too. So it's probably OK to keep the comments thread open longer, but I would still like to close them at some point.&amp;nbsp;
Below is a poll asking for your opinion on the subject. I can change the length of time to any&amp;nbsp;number of days, but I narrowed it down to just a few choices. I don't expect any post would have a lot of comments after 14 days, but I don't really know. Let me know what you think.
I had been putting this post off for a while because initially I had thought about including a few other topics in with it. But I decided I liked the other settings: Two recommends required to highlight a Comment, FanShot, or FanPost, and one flag to raise an alert. Please use the comments if you think we should revisit those settings too.
UPDATE: The poll was open for almost a full week, and 14 days&amp;nbsp;squeaked&amp;nbsp;out a narrow victory. It's been updated to that as of September 6th.

Below is an&amp;nbsp;excerpt from&amp;nbsp;a lengthy preview of the 2010 season for the Green Bay Packers. My entire preview is&amp;nbsp;posted at&amp;nbsp;SBNation.com:

The team is relatively healthy and playing with a lot of confidence so far this preseason. Predictions of a Super Bowl appearance have been written about in many publications and for good reason: this is a very good football team.

    <title>Washington Post: An 18 Game Schedule</title>
    <description>

In my latest article for the&amp;nbsp;Washington Post.com, I focused on what it would mean to fans of Green Bay Packers if there was an extra home game. Could they make a third season ticket package to clear a bunch of names off the season ticket waiting list? They'd have to take at least one game away from the Green package holders. But in the end I hope it doesn't happen:

If they had two more regular season games, then they would have to practice all week, and have two extra weeks of game preparation and film study.&amp;nbsp;Most players wouldn't complain about it publicly, but it's certain to take an extra toll on them physically and mentally. Knowing what two extra regular season games would mean for the players, and knowing they are unlikely to receive raises solely for these two extra regular season games, I wouldn't complain at all if the players squashed the idea of an 18 game schedule.

    <title>The APC Preseason T-Shirt Contest Redux</title>
    <description>

I've got one more T-shirt to give away, thanks the wonderful site&amp;nbsp;Sconnie.com. The winner of this preseason t-shirt contest will receive a&amp;nbsp;Charles Woodson T-shirt:
   LB Desmond&amp;nbsp;&quot;Mr. August&quot;&amp;nbsp;Bishop, NT B.J. Raji, and 13 points.
In the&amp;nbsp;Green Bay Packers&amp;nbsp;final&amp;nbsp;preseason game of 2009, Bishop led the team in tackles, Raji recorded the first sack of the game, and the Packers scored 13 points.
If you can correctly guess the Packers leading tackler, and the first player to record either sack or recover a turnover (the score is the tie-breaker) for Thursday's game against the&amp;nbsp;Chiefs, the t-shirt is yours. To enter, type your answers in the comments.

    <title>Trade Bait and updates</title>
    <description>

We've been talking a lot on here about trading players and acquire picks or depth for the roster. Seems some of the local media have gotten on board too! Bob McGinn of the Journal-Sentinal just wrote about how Breno Giocomni may be on the blocks right now as the Packers now seem to have a few young guys at the tackle positions. He'd be appealing to other teams due to his cheap contract (for 2 more years) and upside he's shown. Its likely he wouldn't fetch more than a seventh rounder though but that is better than nothing! He also talked about how the job at FB is likely for 2 positions and wondered if Quinn Johnson, who played on the sixth snap in the Colts game, was being put on display. I think keeping 3 FBs again this year could be a big mistake...especially since we are talking about having 4 TEs on the roster!
More after the jump...

Capers feels this years Packers have better depth at Safety than we did going into last year.

&quot;I think we&amp;rsquo;ve got better depth than we did last year,&quot; Capers said Tuesday following the final practice of training camp.  &quot;I was concerned about our depth last year, and it proved itself out in  those first four games when Atari went out in the opener, and we ended  up making a roster move after the second game and next thing you know  we&amp;rsquo;ve got a linebacker playing safety.&quot;

Regardless, Rob Demovsky speculates that Safety might be another position where we look to waivers to improve this team.
Sam Shields has been practicing all week as our Nickle corner...possibly preparing for the regular season which has to be one of the true underdog stories of the season if it ends up playing out this way. His coach, Joe Whitt said this of Shields:

&quot;One day he's going to be a  very, very good player, he's not there yet. He needs to be a good player  come the Philly game. He is a great kid.&quot;

We all know Ryan Pickett wasn't a huge fan of his shift to DE, but according to Lori Nickel of the Journal-Sentinal, he's made the shift and now really likes it!

&quot;It took me awhile to accept it. I was disappointed for a little  while,&quot; said Pickett. &quot;But after that, I started playing it and started  liking it.&quot;

He talked about how he enjoys the change and the different responsibilities and is happy to do what he has to do to help the team...what a good guy and a team player! The article reports his first goal is to stop the run, no change from his previous goal, just at a new spot on the line! Our line may end up being the biggest in the league, which should make things tough on RBs around the league.

In their final preseason game, the Green Bay Packers rested their starters. From the&amp;nbsp;Journal-Sentinel:

Packers coach Mike McCarthy treated the affair with disinterest, not even putting uniforms on Rodgers, Ryan Grant or Charles Woodson. In all, the Packers played without 12 players (seven starters) from a 75-man roster that must be pared to a final 53 by 3 p.m. Saturday.

So with the&amp;nbsp;roster cutdown to the maximum 53 players&amp;nbsp;coming on Saturday, it was a good opportunity for the backups to play, and the players that want to be the backups to win a spot on the roster.
Again, staying healthy is always important. The&amp;nbsp;Journal-Sentinel&amp;nbsp;reports that only LS Brett Goode was injured and did not return when he took a shot to the head. It's not major if he is lost for any length of time, but it might become complicated since they might need to find an interim replacement. I'm sure someone like C Scott Wells is given practice time in case of an emergency, but they don't want him to become the primary long-snapper.
Here are how some of the players did on Thursday night:

Disclaimer - I did not watch all of the game yet, so I'm not mentioning everyone. Just some of the players I actually saw.
QB Matt Flynn. He got to play nearly the entire game and threw for over 304 yards. He's looked better this preseason which is to be expected as he gets more experience. He doesn't look as good as QB Aaron Rodgers did in 2007 (when Rodgers was entering his 3rd season) but he looks pretty good considering some of the players around him.
OL Chris Campbell. Speaking of Flynn's teammates, I don't expect Campbell will remain one for long. At 6'5&quot; and 327 lbs. he does have an NFL body. But he doesn't move fast enough laterally to handle NFL pass rushers. When playing left guard, he was caught flat-footed on an inside move and Flynn got sacked. Later while playing right tackle, the defender quickly ran around him and QB Graham Harrell went running. He was probably the main cause why a couple drives stalled. It's hard for the backup QBs to prove anything when lineman play like he does.
The Packers secondary. What I like about Flynn is his willingness to throw down field and his accuracy. He does open it up. Unlike Chiefs backup QB Bradie Croyle, who seemed to either throw the ball out of bounds or dump it off to his tight end. The backup secondary only allowed 177 yards passing, but it was more through inactivity than effectiveness. Also, some poor tackling led to some bigger plays for the Chiefs.
WR Jason Chery. After running a punt return for a TD last week, he was given an extended look in this game. He&amp;nbsp;proceeded&amp;nbsp;to fumble once and almost a second time. He's got some potential, but I expect they'll cut him lose on Saturday because they can't rely on him to hold onto the ball.
WR Brett Swain. He had the big play with a 77 yard pass reception, but the Chiefs botched the coverage, and left him wide, wide open as he ran down the field. Not a exactly sure that play makes a big difference in their decision.
RB Kregg Lumpkin. He's a good runner when healthy, but he's had trouble staying healthy. And FB John Kuhn was given a few chances spelling Lumpkin, and they seemed like similar players. Plus Kuhn plays a big role on special team, and of course, as a full back. I bet they keep only two RBs and pencil in Kuhn as the emergency RB so they can justify keeping three full backs, again.

There aren't a lot of surprises on the Green Bay Packers final&amp;nbsp;53 man roster,&amp;nbsp;but I'll mention a few:
FB Quinn Johnson, FB Korey Hall, and TE Tom Crabtree. All these guys are lumped together in one category: how did they beat out TE Spencer Havner? Johnson's still an iffy receiver, but his lead blocking skills seem first rate. Hall never seems to be given much of a chance with Johnson and FB John Kuhn around, but he keeps hanging on. And I say that as a big fan who wishes he got more playing time. Crabtree is here a little bit on potential, his broken hand and subsequent cast gave him an incomplete grade as a receiver. But he showed off his skills as a blocker when he owned Colts 1st round LB Jerry Hughes during their preseason game. Havner's a good blocker too, and arguably a better receiver than the other three players. It's not a major upset, but I'm still surprised.
WR Brett Swain. It doesn't look like he's gotten his speed back after his ACL surgery, but he does everything right. And that was a struggle for many of the other receivers battling for the 5th WR job. I'm not surprised he beat out players like WR Jason Chery, but I'm surprised the Packers decided to keep five wide receivers.&amp;nbsp;
OL Nick McDonald. He just always seemed to be there, which is maybe a good quality in an offensive lineman. I didn't notice that he was just getting his job done. I need to re-watch the Chiefs game and take a closer look at him.
DE C.J. Wilson. Nothing against him but I didn't really notice him either this preseason. Again, maybe that's a good quality for a defensive end in the 3-4 defense. He was just always at the bottom of the pile. I've got to re-watch that Chiefs game...
S Derrick Martin and S Charlie Peprah. They both looked good against the second string players, but I don't trust them to play like that when the starters come out. Martin seemed likely to make the roster from the beginning, but the injury to SS Atari Bigby&amp;nbsp;probably guaranteed it. Peprah is here only because of Bigby's injury and S Will Blackmon&amp;nbsp;release/injury settlement.
CB Jarrett Bush. The guy is a termite. It doesn't matter how bad he plays, he knows the system (for all the good it does him) and keeps his job. It didn't hurt him that the Packers kept nearly every cornerback they brought to training camp.

    <title>Sports Illustrated NFL Preview On The Packers</title>
    <description>

  I had the chance to interview Damon Hack of Sports Illustrated, who wrote the section on the Green Bay Packers for their NFL preview, which is out on newsstands now. In addition to the Packers, he also wrote the preview sections for the rest of the NFC North which he picked the Packers to win.&amp;nbsp;
Acme Packing Company: The preview began with the two losses to the Vikings. How important is it to beat the Vikings?

Damon Hack: I think it's important since they're the next best team in the division. I talked to Aaron Rodgers who said it became such a big deal last year and Mike McCarthy agreed it had too much hype. The Packers would have won the division if they had split last year. They are the best team in the NFC North but it's good for the team and fan base to mentally get over the Favre thing.

APC: What stood out to you about Green Bay when you visited during training camp?

DH: I love how time stands still. There are trailers in the parking lots and the kids with their bikes. Walking there in the 1960s is just like in 2010. It's a real part of Americana.

APC: The article focused on their strong finish. In general is a strong finish a good predictor of the next season?

DH: Sometimes it can be. As a team that did not make any changes it spoke to their philosophy of building through the draft. They're close to the Super Bowl with what they already have. A.J. Hawk told me they ran into a juggernaut in Arizona and the game took on a life of its own. The strong finish makes you think they should contend for the Super Bowl. But Mike McCarthy said we can't just put on our helmets. They need to go on the field, play hard, and win. The talent is there. They're some really talented players.

APC: Why did you choose to put the spotlight on A.J. Hawk in the preview?

DH: Of all the defenders, he's representative of the defense as a whole. He had such great resolve this year. He's never met the expectations. Mike McCarthy said A.J. is having his best camp. He has to show some better consistency, just as the defense overall.

    <title>NFL Roster Cuts: The Practice Squad Is Set</title>

You can feel the&amp;nbsp;tension&amp;nbsp;even when&amp;nbsp;reading the transcript. It was not a typical press conference for&amp;nbsp;Green Bay Packers GM Ted Thompson on Sunday. The &quot;I don't think that is your business&quot; answer to a question about roster claims? Make sure to never ask him a real personal question. At least&amp;nbsp;two reporters agreed&amp;nbsp;that it was a &quot;contentious&quot; one, though&amp;nbsp;Greg Bedard tweeted&amp;nbsp;that it's been a tough week. And yes, the Packers&amp;nbsp;couldn't find a single player worth a waiver claim, and that seems impossible to me. Moving on...
The&amp;nbsp;Press-Gazette&amp;nbsp;has the practice squad list, and there is room for just one more player on it:
QB Graham Harrell. They needed a 3rd QB who could be kept on the practice squad, and Harrell was probably the best option. They can't sign a veteran QB because no one on the practice squad can have been active for more than 8 games in a single season. Harrell's familiar with the system, he had a ton of experience in college, and looked decent this preseason.&amp;nbsp;
LB Robert Francois. As I said earlier,&amp;nbsp;I'm glad to see him on the practice squad.
S Anthony Levine. I've seen flashes of talent in coverage. He didn't deserve to make the 53-man roster due to poor tackling, but I'm willing to give him another chance as a practice squad player.
LB Maurice Simpkins. I hesitate calling him a LB. I think they'd move DE Cullen Jenkins to LB,&amp;nbsp;as was previously threatened, before they'd let Simpkins play. But he's got potential as a special teams ace. He was flying around against the Chiefs. At least there's a chance he would contribute if he was signed to the 53-man roster.
RT Breno Giacomini. They had to battle the Vikings for him? OK, he's 6'7&quot;, 318 lbs, and it appears that he's got a long wingspan (I don't have the combine results). Physically, he looks like a prototype left tackle. But every so often he gets beat on a speed rush, and that is coming against second team players. He'd get a QB killed if he was a starter. And I don't think he'll figure it out if he hasn't figured it out already. Maybe that's just fine since this is only the practice squad after all.
WR Chastin West. I don't see any reason to keep around. He was awful against the Chiefs as a receiver, but he was given an opportunity as a returner. The only reason to keep him over WR Jason Chery is that West didn't drop any kick or punt returns that I can recall. But there had to be another receiver on waivers that was better than him.
OL Chris Campbell. Ugh. The list just gets worse the longer it goes on. I want Giacomini to go away, but he's much better than Campbell.
This list just stinks of not wanting to claim or sign any other team's rejects without a workout first. Since RB Kregg Lumpkin was&amp;nbsp;claimed off waivers, they'll have to find another RB for the practice squad since they usually have at least one. The practice squad is very fluid over the course of the season, so this isn't anything to get hung up about.

As I watch Boise State and Virginia Tech wrap up the opening week of the college football season tonight, my thoughts naturally turn to the NFL and to the Packers' season. As I did&amp;nbsp;last year, I'll go over this season game-by-game, projecting the Packers' season record and finish within the division.&amp;nbsp;A few sentences on each game of the 2010 season can be found after the jump.
When all is said and done, I see a 12-4 season for our Green and Gold in 2010, enough to earn an NFC North division title.
There are a few storylines and factors that I think may have a serious impact on the results of this year. One is the return of Al Harris. If he can return from the PUP list at full strength, it will significantly help the defense against teams with multiple receiving threats (and hopefully his activation will give Ted Thompson the excuse to cut Jarrett Bush). Another major factor, to nobody's surprise, will be the play of the special teams units. With Will Blackmon's release, Jordy Nelson will&amp;nbsp;likely be the primary kick returner&amp;nbsp;with Tramon Williams handling the punts, and we can only hope that the blocking teams fare better than in recent years. One other player who I see as becoming a bigger factor this year is RB Brandon Jackson. I have a hunch that he will establish himself as one of the better 3rd-down backs in the league this year, and that he may have moments like in the Seahawks preseason game where he really shines.
Feel free to criticize my picks in the comments below.&amp;nbsp;

Week 1: Packers @ Eagles, 3:15
The big matchup in this game should be the Packers' pass defense against Kevin Kolb in his first game as a full-time starter for Philly. Combine that with Andy Reid's distaste for the running game and a new starter at running back in LeSean McCoy, and you can see why the secondary will be put to the test. Philly's defense isn't what it once was, however, and I see the Packers winning a fairly high-scoring game. (W, 1-0)
Week 2: vs. Bills, 12:00
Because of my well-documented man-crush on Wisconsin alumni, I'll have my eye on Lee Evans. However, the Bills' best unit is their special teams. If guys like Korey Hall, Tom Crabtree, and Frank Zombo (my new favorite Packer) can contain KR Roscoe Parrish, this game shouldn't be close. (W, 2-0)
Week 3: @ Bears, 7:15 (Monday night)
Remember Jay Cutler's performance in the opener last year? Now he has an even more pass-happy coordinator in Mike Martz. Brian Urlacher returns after playing one quarter last season, but he's been banged up again this preseason. I just don't see enough talent on the defensive side of the ball for the Bears to keep Aaron Rodgers and company off the board. (W, 3-0)
Week 4: vs. Lions, 12:00
Is the Lions' defense better? Probably. The additions of Ndamukong Suh and Kyle Vandenbosch up front will help the line, but I can't see Lions putting up a fight at Lambeau Field.&amp;nbsp;One curiosity is former Badger LB DeAndre Levy, who is moving to the inside for the first time after playing OLB for his entire college and pro career.&amp;nbsp;(W, 4-0)
Week 5: @ Redskins, 12:00
With Mike Shanahan taking over as the head coach and an established QB in Donovan McNabb, this Redskins team suddenly seems like they could make some noise in the NFC East. Their talented secondary needs to show some progress, but they could give Rodgers some difficulty. This is one of those gut-feeling picks like my pick in the Tampa Bay game last year, and I see the Redskins taking a close one. (L, 4-1)
Week 6: vs. Dolphins, 12:00
The team to introduce the Wildcat to the NFL comes to Lambeau in mid-October, but I'm confident that the speed of the Packers' linebackers negates it for the most part. What will make the difference is the Charles Woodson-Brandon Marshall matchup. Since the Dolphins don't have an established second option in the passing game, Capers can focus on Marshall and the running game. The Dolphins only standouts on defense are their middle linebackers, Channing Crowder and Karlos Dansby (remember him?) but they don't have enough playmakers at other positions to slow down the Packers. (W, 5-1)
Week 7: vs. Vikings, 7:20 (Sunday night)
You-know-who returns to Lambeau again. That's enough talk about him. These two teams know each other well, and neither has made huge changes from the last time they played. This time, Rodgers and the Packers get their revenge on a Vikings team without its best receiving option. (W, 6-1)
Week 8: @ Jets, 12:00
In their first visit to New Giants Stadium/The Meadowlands/whatever they call it when the Jets play there, the Packers may have some difficulty against the Jets' defense. In a matchup between the self-proclaimed NFL defensive player of the year and the player who actually won&amp;nbsp;the award, I have a hunch that Revis gets the best of Woodson in this one and the Hard Knocks All-Stars get a win. My player to watch: perennial overachiever Jim Leonhard from Ladysmith, WI. (L, 6-2)
Week 9: vs. Cowboys, 7:20 (Sunday night)
Miles Austin, Jason Witten, and Dez Bryant will be dangerous threats, but with Al Harris back in the secondary by this time (if all goes well with his recovery), they should be able to handle multiple receivers. Aside from DeMarcus Ware, the Cowboys don't seem to have many impact players on defense, just solid players who know their roles. Rodgers and Finley should have a good day against the Cowboys' average safeties, and the Cowboys continue their struggles in Lambeau. (W, 7-2)
Week 11: @ Vikings, 12:00
Last year, I couldn't pick either team to sweep both games. I feel the same way this year, and we get yet another reason to hate the Metrodome. (L, 7-3)
Week 12: @ Falcons, 12:00
The Falcons could be a dangerous team this year, and many people are picking them to win the NFC South. Matt Ryan should show improvement in his third season with a number of solid weapons around him. The front seven should be strong, but the secondary can be beaten. If the offensive line gives Rodgers time to throw, the Packers win. (W, 8-3)
Week 13: vs. 49ers, 12:00*
An excellent defense led by LB Patrick Willis will give the Packers their best shot. However, much like last year's meeting, an offense led by Alex Smith won't be able to muster enough points late to beat the Packers at Lambeau. (W, 9-3)
Week 14: @ Lions, 12:00*
This game actually worries me a bit. The Lions do have weapons on offense in Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson. Add in RB Jahvid Best's blazing speed on turf and there could be some concern. However, as in the first meeting, the defense can't contain the Packers. (W, 10-3)
Week 15: @ Patriots, 7:20* (Sunday night)
Though the Patriots consistently have a very good team, I'm not terribly impressed with them this year. They probably won't have much of a running game (although that's not much of a change), but I just don't get a championship-caliber vibe from their defense. The game will hinge on how the Packers handle slot receiver Wes Welker. If Al Harris is indeed at full strength, I would expect him to shadow Randy Moss while Woodson shadows Welker all over the field. If that's the case, the Packers win. (W, 11-3)
Week 16: vs. Giants, 3:15*
Every year, the Packers seem to lose a winnable game. While I mean no disrespect to the Giants, getting them at home should be a winnable game. Their offense is dangerous, and by this time in the season Ahmad Bradshaw should be starting at running back. The Giants ground game may pull them ahead for a close win. (L, 11-4)
Week 17: vs. Bears, 12:00*
Normally, I would be wary of picking the Packers to win both games against the Bears, regardless of the quality of the teams (see my 2009 preview). However, my guess is that a win against Chicago clinches the division for the Packers, so they'll be plenty motivated to beat an outmatched Bears team and clinch a division title. (W, 12-4)
That's all she wrote. A 12-4 season with a division title is my goal and my prediction. This team has the talent to do it, and I look forward to watching them try. One final note: if any of you readers are in or around the Columbus, OH area, I urge you to join the Buckeye Packer Backers club at the On Tap Pub on Bethel Road for the opening game on Sunday afternoon. I'll be there with a huge crowd of rowdy Packers fans, and I hope to see you there.

    <title>Packer Links: James Johnson Is A Packer, Shields Is The Nickel Back, Williams Is The Punt Returner</title>

There's less than a week to go before the Green Bay Packers open their season against the Eagles, but I'm still looking back at the moves made to set the roster this weekend.
RB James Johnson was&amp;nbsp;added to the practice squad. I expected they would add a&amp;nbsp;running back with their final roster opening. There's not much to say about his NFL career so far. He spent the 2008 and 2009 seasons with the Bengals and was&amp;nbsp;re-signed by them in mid-August as an injury replacement. During his last season of college (2007), he was part of a running back platoon with RB Leon Patton in an offense that gave them&amp;nbsp;&quot;only token inclusion.&quot;&amp;nbsp;He was college teammates with WR Jordy Nelson and Bucs QB Josh Freeman. He had&amp;nbsp;34 receptions as a senior, the same year that Nelson had&amp;nbsp;122 receptions. It looks like they wanted a running back who's also a good receiver, and can backup RB Brandon Jackson as the 3rd down back.&amp;nbsp;
According to the&amp;nbsp;Journal-Sentinel, the Packers led the NFL with 5 players claimed. It's interesting that all 5 were originally undrafted free agents. Those are solid players, but I don't think the Packers lost a lot either.
I'm still surprised that CB Sam Shields has won the nickel back job. I expected someone more tenured like (shudder) CB Jarrett Bush would get the nod until CB Al Harris returns mid-season or CB Brandon Underwood's&amp;nbsp;shoulder heals. Shields is the best of the rest. But what caught my eye in this&amp;nbsp;Journal-Sentinel&amp;nbsp;article was that he's roommates with starting rookie SS Morgan Burnett. The idea of them learning from each other after practice is interesting, and it obviously helped both of them.
I was expecting Nelson would return punts and RB Brandon Jackson would return kickoffs. Instead Nelson is the kick returner and CB Tramon Williams is&amp;nbsp;the punt returner. Nelson's a solid, not a home run threat, but he's had a bunch of good ones in his career. I'm not sure I like the idea of Williams running around on defense, and then having to lineup on special teams. But anyone who remembers Williams on punt returns in 2007 will know he's a home run threat. They are the two best options, so it's certainly the correct decision in that regard.
One of the changes this season is that LB Clay Matthews has&amp;nbsp;switched to the left side of defense. The first reason for this (so I've read) is to put him on the side opposite DE Cullen Jenkins, and have their top two pass rushers on opposite sides. That sounds good in theory, but it obviously didn't hurt Matthews last season to play alongside Jenkins. The reason I like better is that he's now on the strong side, and typically over the tight end. As a former defensive end who weighs 10-15 lbs. more than LB Brad Jones, it makes sense to have him play on the side that typically has the extra blocker and the bigger offensive lineman.
From the&amp;nbsp;Journal-Sentinel. With the waiver and injury settlement to RB Quinn Porter, and previously S Will Blackmon, the Packers are starting a new trend. In previous years, they usually kept players on I.R. all season. It probably doesn't hurt to keep them around (they're getting paid either way) and then they have first hand knowledge whether the player can fit into their plans for next season. But instead they're clearing out the I.R. and now only CB Josh Bell remains on it. RT Allen Barbre was&amp;nbsp;released earlier after receiving an injury settlement&amp;nbsp;followed his trip to the I.R.&amp;nbsp;
