Premier League: Aston Villa 5-1 Bolton Wanderers 09:40:28 am , 11-07-2009 Norwegian striker John Carew had a hand in three goals and scored one as Aston Villa claimed their biggest win of the season against a Bolton team who succeeded only in strengthening their credentials as relegation candidates.Villa's other goals came form Ashley Young, Gabriel Agbonlahor, James Milner and Carlos Cuellar, with Johan Elmander sneaking paltry consolation for Bolton.Villa began the day eight places above Gary Megson's men, but the fact they had scored only one goal more than their visitors backed up critics who claim they will not infiltrate the top four because they are, essentially, a counter-attacking force, who lack the creativity to regularly cut open well-drilled defences.Bolton appeared to bank on that assessment being true as they began with a conservative five-man midfield screening their back four. Their plan for scrounging a point may have been sound, but the execution was fatally flawed - within five minutes, lackadaisical defending allowed Villa to take the lead.Milner was granted too much time to size up a cross and lofted in the ball from the right wing to Carew, whose header from eight yards out, was spilled by the normally reliable Jussi Jaaskelainen. Ashley Young reacted quicker than any Bolton player to bang the rebound into the net from close range.Bolton's inability to compete in the air became a recurring theme and meant every home corner, of which there were many, provoked panic. From one Ashley Young delivery, Carlos Cuellar brought a good save from Jaaskelainen and, twice, Richard Dunne went close after getting on the end of corners. In the 18th minute, Carew flicked on a long ball from the back to Agbonlahor, who held off Zat Knight before swivelling sharply and shooting just over. With Bolton lifeless, Megson did not wait until half-time to make a change, introducing a second striker, Johan Elmander, in place off Tamir Cohen after 30 minutes. The pattern, however, remained the same and Villa exploited more slack defending to hit a second.Former Villa trainee Gary Cahill tried to shepherd the ball out of play, but Carew stole it effortlessly and pulled it back to Agbonlahor, who fired low into the net from 10 yards out. Then, shoddy defending by Villa allowed Cahill to atone before the break. Sam Ricketts launched a long ball into the box, Villa failed to clear it and it bobbled to Cahill, whose shot deflected off Dunne and back off the post. But Elmander tapped it into the net from a yard out.Bolton began the second half brightly, but were betrayed once more by bad defending. Carew received the ball with his back to goal, 10 yards out, before rolling past Knight and Cahill, and poking his shot underneath Jaaskelainen for Villa's third goal.Without having to excel, Villa continued to threaten, but their fourth goal came only after referee Mark Clattenburg gave them a soft penalty, penalising Kevin Davies for an imperceptible shove on Carew.Jaaskelainen blocked Milner's spotkick, Sidwell struck the rebound off the post, and back the ball came to Milner, who thumped it into the net.Three minutes later, Cuellar loped forward and backheaded an Ashley Young cross into the net for his first goal for Villa since joining the club more than a year ago.Premier LeagueAston VillaBolton WanderersPaul Doyleguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2009 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
